Celebrating our past…fundraising for our future

Thirty years ago Hospiscare was launched with just one nurse and a big dream… to provide expert care and support to patients and their families, free of charge.

Now as we celebrate three busy decades of successful expansion, Hospiscare is launching a very special year to both celebrate our past… and fundraise for our future.

That is why 2012 promises to be a particularly busy and exciting anniversary year for all our supporters. So many individuals and groups help make a difference, whether by putting on an in July by our ever-popular golf tournament.

“Hospiscare’s story is one of real determination to make a difference,” says the charity’s Chief Executive Glynis Atherton. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all those who have helped to guide our charity through the past three decades. But with more than £4 million to raise each and every year, we need now to ask for continued support so we can all look forward to a future providing local families with the expert care and support they so desperately need.”

For full updates on all of Hospiscare’s 2012 activities, see our website and event leaflets www.hospiscare.co.uk/events

There is an anniversary fashion show planned for the spring, featuring outfits from the past 30 years, sourced from our wonderful charity shops.

Monday 25th June will see an anniversary service of celebration and thanksgiving in Exeter Cathedral, followed

The perfect musical tribute to a friend

Hospiscare volunteer driver John Couper successfully completed walking 630 miles of the South West Coast Path this summer and has so far raised over £1,000 for Hospiscare.

“Walking the South West Coast Path has been a great experience, with many happy memories (and sore feet!).” said John of his fantastic fundraising adventure. Although he had many more stories, the final stretch of his journey, where he paddled the final two miles along Studland Beach with his wife Doris, was particularly touching.

Overall, John had a great time saying: “My abiding memories are of the glorious coastline, the wonderful kindness of strangers, and of my friends and family, who have given so generously.”

International concert pianist Andreas Boyde dedicated a recent successful concert performance to the memory of fellow musician and friend, Joanna Leach.

Joanna Leach from Shute near Axminster, died age 73 in April in the Exeter hospice of Hospiscare. The concert was the first in a series by the Joanna Leach Foundation to raise cash for Hospiscare.

Close friend and organiser Elizabeth Tirard said “It was an amazing event, and to witness and experience such talent in a very local setting was wonderful.”

Fundraising success

The smiles said it all as a relaxed Countess of Wessex officially opened Hospiscare’s new mid Devon centre Pine Lodge.

The royal visit was the perfect thank you for a stunning community effort to provide local patients with this special new facility.

Pine Lodge was a dark and neglected shell when Hospiscare bought the Tiverton building with a Department of Health grant. Its transformation into a bright, welcoming centre with a wide range of facilities offering patients expert care and support was made possible when £250,000 was raised in just a few months.

The beaming Countess met Hospiscare founder Dr John Searle along with staff and volunteers before being given a tour of the facilities by the charity’s Chief Executive Glynis Atherton.

Her Royal Highness spoke with fundraisers about the wide range of events organised for the appeal and met Michael Hickson, the former Head Gardener of the Knightshayes Garden Trust who is now planning the transformation of the Pine Lodge garden into a tranquil haven for patients.

But the highlight of the day was the relaxed time the Countess spent chatting

and laughing with patients. It was clear the royal visitor fully understood the importance of the centre. She took time to talk with former nurse Maureen Seaton about how much she valued the facilities and the company. She joked along

with patient Eric Taverner who cheekily confessed he rather enjoyed being the only male patient among so many lovely ladies.

The Countess made a special effort to sit and talk with the centre’s oldest patient Phyllis Lewis as she presented the royal bouquet.

Afterwards patients and fundraisers shared tea and cakes and their royal stories.

“The Countess was just lovely,” said Phyllis, who is 102. “So natural and interested in everyone. I wasn’t at all nervous.”

“It was a real pleasure to meet her,” agreed Maureen. “She was so intuitive and having a cup of tea with her was totally unexpected.

“Pine Lodge is a wonderful place and today was a real boost for us all.”

Help us to continue to help people

Pine Lodge is now open, but we now need to make sure we can continue our vital work in Devon. By making a donation to Hospiscare, you can make a difference.

£8 could provide transport for a patient to one of our day centres.

£30 could help keep the hospice working smoothly behind the scenes.

£50 could fund a visit from our supportive care team to a patient in their home.

£90 could fund specialist equipment provided by our Rehabilitation Manager so patients can return home, where they wish to be, giving them control of their life.

Did you know that Hospiscare supports over 2,000 people locally, of which over 1,700 are in the community?

It is an exciting time for Hospiscare Lottery after a rebranding revolution and news of a remote licence.

The Lottery has been hugely successful and very popular since it was first introduced back in 2000. Now the Lottery has had its first major facelift since it was launched. With a new strapline, logo and even Lottie the elephant, this vital source of income for Hospiscare should now appeal to a wider audience.

It is now easier than ever to join the Lottery as Hospiscare Lottery now has a remote licence, allowing us to take payments over the phone. You can now join in a matter of minutes – just by picking up the phone and speaking to one of the Lottery team. Our remote licence will also allow us to take payments through our website later in the year.

Since the lottery gives a chance to raise money for a fantastic cause but also a possibility to win some cash, Hospiscare Lottery really is something to smile about.

Why not become a regular lottery player and receive your own Lottie, then upload your own photos? More details of how to join can be found on our website at:http://www.hospiscare.co.uk/Hospiscare_lottery/How_to_play or call 01392 688025 9am-3pm, Monday to Friday.

Lottie the Elephant has been spotted in various places and with various celebrities, including at the 2011 Moto2 World Championship in Valencia with Bradley Smith, London and Australia.

September 10th 2011 will undoubtedly go down as an historic day in Hospiscare history.

For this was the date which witnessed a special tea party in the beautiful grounds of Powderham Castle. The occasion? A celebration of the winning of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service: the perfect way to honour Hospiscare’s thousand or so volunteers as the charity approaches its thirtieth anniversary year in 2012. The Award – which is the equivalent of the MBE for volunteers - was formally presented to the charity’s thousand or so volunteers earlier in the year.

The Powderham party is sure to prove a day to remember for all of the 600 volunteers present. In addition to receiving a special tour of the castle, the volunteers were entertained by music from pianist and volunteer John Allison as well as by a string quartet from Exeter Symphony Orchestra.

Volunteering Manager Vicky Lachenicht has said: “We have received so many thank you messages from the volunteers saying how much they enjoyed their special day at the castle. What a tremendous sight to see all those wonderful volunteers with huge smiles, a few huge hats and eager anticipation to enjoy the refreshments! It was team work at its best.”

The tea party, only possible through Powderham Castle’s kind donation of the venue, was the perfect way to thank all our wonderful volunteers for their work, which last year saved Hospiscare £1 million.
