Early Settlements
• First attempts in NC were unsuccessful
– Low supplies, poor relations with Natives
• The Lost Colony
– Established in 1587 on Roanoke Island, NC
– Shipped returned in 1590 with supplies
– Colony had vanished
– Only clue- CROATOAN carved on a post• Name of a friendly tribe further south
– Killed? Moved in with Natives?
Lessons from Lost Colony
• Learned Natives liked copper
• This would prove critical for Jamestown Settlement– When ran out of food, could trade copper for food
Reasons for English Settlements in Americas
• Searching for riches
– Gave them a base to attack Spanish
• Desire for a Northwest passage to the orient
– Americas would provide refueling stops
• New markets to buy English goods
• Place to spread people out
Formation of Virginia Company
• Formed by a group of investors – Sponsored expeditions to Americas– Want profits and new land
