THE young Parks, shown here attackingthe defense of FEUs Chester Tolomia, boasts of a fearsome inside and outsidegame. AUGUST DELA CRUZ

Cmon Ray!Lets play ballBy Dennis U. Eroa

    I

LIKE Ray Parks. He has given justice to the name of his latefather Bobby Ray, eight-time PBA Best Import, and one of

the most likeable reinforcements ever to land in the pros.Despite National Universitys

failure to land the big fish, Parks, articulate, humble and explosive,

won the MVP the last two seasons. He also gained tons of sympathyamong the fans when he came out

wearing a shirt in memory of hisdeparted girlfriend.

My, my, my. This Parks is reallydifferent. While others have thetendency to brag about their courtexploits, Parks is a silent worker.

He knows that wihout a ring, hellbe the Partick Ewing, Karl Maloneand Charles Barkley of the NBA.This happened to James Yap andJun Limpot, remember.

When you won back-to-backMVP awards, nobody raised ahowl. Not even from the presscorps, whose battle-tested mem-bers have navigated the unpre-dictable waters of the UAAP but

wasnt given the right to vote bythe heirarchy.

Why protest that only statisticsat the end of the eliminations wereused by the league to pick theMVP?

Parks is likeable. And for thepress corps that should cover up forthe glaring snub by the league. Factis, the UAAP mens basketball tour-nament has been drawing hugenumbers and nobody cares aboutthe other issues surrounding theleague.

I refer, of course, to the Jerie

Pingoy case, the Mikee Bartolomecase, Senador Pia Cayetanos con-tinuing crusade against the attitudeof some UAAP bigwigs, the TROs,etc, etc.

Even UE, next years host, hasalready sounded the alarm regard-ing the hate surrounding theleague which runs contrary to theidea of sportsmanship.

In an interview with Reuben Ter-rado of the popular website spin.ph(Sports Interactive Network philip-pines), UE marketing manager Dr.

Jess Tanchanco and team manager ofthe UE Red Warriors stressed thatUAAP is beginning to lose the valuesof sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Tanchanco believes the UAAP musthave reforms to bring back love andforget hatred among different players.

Sadly, the story didnt interest a lotof my sports writing friends. Its theFinal Four, remember.

But, I have to go back to Ray.Interviewed by the media mo-

ments after the UST Tigers of thetigerish Pido Jarencio prolonged theagonizing wait of the NU Bulldogsto make the finals, Parks, everdiplomatic, hit USTs type ofgame comparing it to theBad Boys era of theDetroit Pistons.

He specificallyexpressed frustra-tion on Kevin Fer-rer, who shonenot only in de-

fense but in of-fense as USTtamed the top-seededBulldogs, 71-62.

Cmon Ray. The 6-foot-4 Ferrerdidnt play with the intention ofhurting you. He played with thesavvy of a tough defender. Remem-ber there are tons of difference be-tween tough and dirty. UST won be-cause it was the better team, period. The Tigers rebounded very well, shotbetter and played with growl in their

hearts. The true worth of a MVP will beknown only if he leads his team tothe promised land.

I know that you know this.By the way, Detroit with Bill Laim-

beer, Joe Dumars, Vinnie Johnsonand Isiah Thomas, won back-to-backtitles during the 1989-90 season.

Good luck Ray, Im sure Bobbysup there giving strength to his

wonderful son.Remember, there is game to

    be won.

    By Jose Ma. BonifacioEscoda

    AFTER another unproductiveseason, Adamson Falcons

will parade a new coach inthe UAAP.

Kenneth Durendes, akathe Captain Marbel will tryto guide the under-achieving

Falcons Season 80 of thecountrys premier collegiateleague.

Formerly a deputy ofhead coach Leo Austria, whoresigned to pursue newcoaching challenges,Duremdes, a native of Mar-bel in Cotabato, will be thesecond Falcon ace to becomehead coach of the Falcons.

The first was the late An-tonio Guinto, who served as

asisstant coach duringDuremdes heydays in theUAAP. Guinto also coachedmany-time womens champi-on Lady Falcons during theearly 90s and the national

womens basketball team.Duremdes lifted the Fal-

cons to second spot duringthe 1993 and 1994 UAAPcampaigns. With seven-foot-er EJ Feihl, Adamson toppedthe 1994 UAAP Invitationals.

A veteran of the nationalteam, Duremdes was ad-

judged PBA MVP in 1998and was a member of theelite 25 greatest players inthe pro league. He retired in2008.

Ex-Falcon Marlou Aquinoand Vince Hizon are expect-ed to help Duremdes in plan-ning Adamsons rise.

Adamson last won theUAAP title in 1977. Thatteam featured Hector Calma.

    UAAP MVP TERRENCE ROMEO

Bwakaw is the bestBy Randolph B. LeongsonB

WAKAW, buwaya, ball-hog. Terrence Bill Romeohas been called by that name more than oncein his young basketball career. But after 14

games in the 76th season of the UAAP, we can add an-other to those labels given to him - the best.

Averaging 22.2 points, 6.3rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.6steals per outing and amassinga total of 75.2857 SPs (statisti-cal points), Romeo earned theMost Valuable Player honors forthis season, edging two-timeMVP Bobby Ray Parks of NU,USTs Karim Abdul, and UEsCharles Mammie.

He previously was feted theRookie of the Year in Season 73,

and took home the juniors MVPin his last season with the BabyTamaraws in 2009.

The enigmatic guard fromCavite took the drivers seat insilencing the preseasondoubters, proving that he, RRGarcia, and Mike Tolomia, can

coexist in the Tamaraws back-court, and turned them into be-lievers with FEUs dream run tothe top of the standings in theprocess.

Masaya ako kasi matagal kong dream maging MVP kaya so-brang thankful ako kay Lord, sa

mga teammates ko, at pati narin sa coaching staff, he said.Di ko maipaliwanag. Hindi

lahat ng players nabibigyan ngchance maging MVP.

Aside from his fuzzy hair, the5-foot-10 guard knows thatthere is still much that he has tofix in his game.

Sa tingin ko, kailangan kopang mas mag-mature ng kontikasi may mga times na kulangako sa pagiging vocal leader sacourt, he said.

This observation was alsoechoed by their bench tactician,FEU coach Nash Racela.

Hes still a work in progress.Hes slowly maturing into some-body na gusto natin, peromalayo pa sya sa maturity level

na gusto nating marating forhim, he said.

Were trying to change a lotof things on the court and offthe court here in FEU. We reallyfelt na those things outside bas-ketball, it all contributes on the

way you play, the way you de-

cide in ballgames, the way youreact to certain situations,Racela said.

Just like sa maturity ni Ter-rence, malayo pa kami dun sagusto naming culture. Its a strug-gle for the players and for the

whole team. That culture andthose habits, mahirap i-break yuneh, but were very positive namagbabago naman yan.

Romeo is definitely boughtto this concept employed bytheir new mentor, and is upbeatof the chances their team hasnow that the UAAP is on itshomestretch.

Basta sa ako, think positivelang ako sa lahat, he said.

And as a team, stay togetherlang kami.

THEY made a wish, but they also worked on it. The National Uni-versity Pep Squad did not resort to any magic tricks to earntheir first championship in the UAAP Cheerance Competition

(CDC) last Sept. 16. Instead, they relied on their skills to execute theirgenie-inspired routine flawlessly.

We wanted a theme na lahatmakakarelate, kahit sa mga bata, saidhead coach Ghicka Bernabe when asked

why they like to play with fantasy themes(their routine last year was Disney-in-spired).

They are the fourth team to win achampionship in the CDC. They join theranks of former champions namely the UPPep Squad, FEU Cheering Squad and USTSalinggawi Dance Troupe.

Bernabe added that she could not be-lieve that her team won back-to-back ti-

tles, referring to the National Cheerlead-ing Competition championship they gotearlier this year.

Na-imagine ko pong magcha-champi-on kami. Pero ang hindi ko alam eh kungmakakasama pa ako sa lineup. Alam kopong maraming darating na mas magagal-ing sa akin, said an ecstatic team captain

Adrian Alban. He joined the team when he was just

just wanted to avoid being at the bottom. It was also a time when the slightest

changes in the rules of the competitionsuch as barring high school students toperform affected them the most. It wasbecause their school population could noteven churn out enough cheerleaders tocomplete the team.

Alban says things began to change forthem in 2010. Two years after the Sys ac-quired 60 percent stake of their school, they were given brand new foam mats fortraining.

Dati kasi walang mats. Yung old gymnamin kahoy lang ang flooring. Doon ka-mi nagpapractice ng stunts. Kapag bu-magsak ka sa kahoy, nakakasaludsod(When you land on wooden floors, youcan get splinters), noted Alban.

The following year, they got Bernabe asthe new head coach. She formerly han-

dled FEUCS. Her specialization is gymnas-tics.

Their coaching staff was further beefedup. They currently have two coaches forstunts, one for dance, and one for ballet. It is possible that they have the most num-ber of specialized coaches in the league.Under Bernabes lead, they started scout-ing for more cheerleaders.

These changes showed. In their 2011Matador-inspired routine, everyone saw amarked improvement in tumbling, baskettosses, and pyramids from the team. They

were doing things never seen from thesquad before. It was, as they say, a pre-

view of whats to come.NUs win two weeks ago was not a

matter of luck. Their rise to the top is aresult of a two-year intensive training, ag-gressive recruitment, and the determina-tion to make it.

F theres one team in the league right now whichembodies the phrase peaking at the right time,

its no less than the De La Salle Green Archers.Having an unimpressive record

in the first round, the Taft ballersrolled on to a second-roundsweep and claimed the secondtwice-to-beat incentive as theyoutlasted the FEU Tamaraws andare now looking to their first Fi-nals stint after five futile years.

La Salle bench tactician JunoSauler downplayed the streak ofthe Green Archers, saying, Myaim is just to keep on improving,

and to come out with bettermindset and mental toughnessfrom the previous game. Its notreally about the streak.

Everything was mental in ourpreparation. After the firstround, I just told theteam that we have tobe mentally tougherand mentally pre-pared, he said.

When asked ifthere was any adjustment

for La Salle in fueling this run,Sauler bared that there wasnothing special in what they do.

    Archers, assuming the leadership

role just in his second year in theleague. He is supported by bigmen Jason Perkins, Norbert Torresand Arnold Van Opstal, andguards Almond Vosotros, LA Re-

villa, and Thomas Torres. The son of the Robocop

Alvin Teng has also exorcisedthe demons that have hauntedhim throughout his youngUAAP career - his free throwshooting.

When I was making my freethrows, I was just thinking of

what I was doing in practice,Teng said, who has PBA great Al-lan Caidic mentoring the team intheir shooting. I said I will justdo what I do after practice andthat is to shoot extra free throws.

Every game, we have to usethe opportunity to learn more,he said.

Now its up to Teng and therest of the Green Archers if they

want to have the right to be

called as champions. The Green Archers came closer

to winning the UAAP crown afterbesting the FEU Tamaraws, 71-68,last Wednesday. This was DLSUsfirst trip to the final after fivefruitless years.

NU BULLDOGS By Randolph B. Leongson

STAY together. That has always beenthe mantra for the National Universitysince coach Eric Altamirano took over

the Bulldogs before the Season 74tournament.A fifth-place finish in his inaugural season,

and a spot in the Final Four last year, the Jhoc-son-based Bulldogs eyes the fulfillment of theirascension to the top by clinching the top-seedat the end of the eliminations this time, andhopefully the championship.

Finally realizing the promise they had evenfrom last season, the team has undergone severalhiccups during the course of the year. Camerooni-an Alfred Aroga, a member of their preseasonlineup, was barred to play at the top of the season

due to eligibility issues. Starting the season at 3-3including a two-game losing streak, the playersknew that enough was enough.

After their third loss at the hands of theAdamson Falcons, the team stayed inside theirdugout at the Mall of Asia Arena for nearlytwo hours, holding a players-only meeting thatclearly revitalized the team for the rest of theseason.

The talk was very positive. Its really moreof trying to talk to each other and letting ev-erybody know kung ano ang matutunan mo sateam, Altamirano said. Its more of remindingthe identity of the team and role of each play-er, for them to be open to criticisms.

NU bounced back with a 63-56 win over LaSalle to finish the first-round which started theirsix-game winning run, and went 7-1 to finish theeliminations. They took the top spot with a 10-4card, and is now in a firm position to enter the Fi-nals for the first time since 1977, and a chance to

win their first hoops title since 1954.It really paid off for us. Mas determined

sila, Altamirano added.Starting point guard Gelo Alolino reflected that

the talk helped the team become more solid.Altamirano said that from that point on, the

team was on the same page, that even the sub-stitutes have felt the desire to win for the bet-ter of all. Thats whats good about this team. The bench is willing to step up, he said, refer-ring to the efforts chipped in by guys likeRobin Roo, Glenn Khobuntin, Jeoff Javillonar,Troy Rosario, J-jay Alejandro, Kyle Neypes, andNico Javelona.

Two-time MVP Ray Parks said that the maindifference of this squad is how strong they areas a unit this season.

Once we step on the court, we know thatwe have each others backs, said the second-

generation star that filled the distributor rolefor the better part of their winning run. Also, its amazing that we have the crowd. Its fairlynew to us.

If the Bulldogs somehow make their long-awaited return trip to the championship series,Parks should be used to the size of the crowdthat comes to the arena every time they takethe court. But more than the fans that supportthe team, Parks knows that their success willbe up to them - the players.

"Were more together than last year and wereally trust one another. We just have to stay

    together.
