WEARING black on Valen-tines Day to show protestagainst a day meant only

for those lucky in relationships, is sopass. But going to a singles bar isjust a little desperate.

    However, if you

couldnt hit it off withsomeone before Valen-tines, then the singlesbar, with its communalfeeling of misery, might be the best placefor you. It may also bea good place for anookie. But honestly, that would just give

you problemssuch astrying to remember thepersons name the next

day, and having to re-member why you metin the first place.

    Theres nothing

wrong with being sin-gle on Valentines Day.I say this with no bit-terness. I am, afterall, a pro in this, hav-ing spent 28 of my 29

years dateless on V-Day. Dateless, you canalways go for the bestexplanationImpicky and choosy. Idont settle and I justhavent found the

right person yet.Lets just hope its

    Have a budget-friendly Valentine

    1. Bake something athome. Ask your parents if youand your date can mooch offthe kitchen for a day and whipup brownies or cookies togeth-er. If both of you arent exactlykitchen gurus, its okaythefun is in trying out somethingnew.

    2. Bring out the boardgames. Play Scrabble orMonopoly. Youll find yourselvesbonding over the silliest inside

    jokes.3. Check out exhibits. Some

galleries and museums havefree exhibits; make a day of itand hang out in the company ofart and history. (Your date willthink youre cultureda bigplus!)

    4. Picnic under the stars.Hang out in an open field like

the Sunken Garden or the Bel-larmine field and bring sand-

wiches and coffee. Go stargaz-ing and just talk quietly. Keep in

mind that schools have curfews,so start early.

    5. Take photos. If you havea DSLR or can borrow one, head somewhere picturesque

where you and your date cantake lots of photos. If you knowhow to use a manual cameraand he/she doesnt, youll getplus points for teaching yourdate. (And youll have plenty ofphotos of him/her afterwards).

    P500Its not much nowadays, but

a lot can still be done with yourP500. Youll be surprised by

what you can still do.1. Go ice skating. Its a fun,

goofy way to get to know eachother if you arent a couple yet,and a great way to break themonotony if youve alreadybeen dating for quite some

time. Some ice rinks give outcoupons for free skating time,so watch out for flyers.

    2. Skip the movie (itll be too

crowded on Valentines day)and watch a bunch of DVDsand order some food. To avoidbeing trite, go for a theme movienight (Disney cartoon night, art film festival, or corny Fil-ipino movies) and order some-thing other than pizza.

    3. Hang out in school. Dothis only if you arent a student, and if you and your date stud-ied in the same university. Youllhave a blast remembering yourheyday in school, and you can

swap stories about the crazythings you did as an undergrad.Have fishballs or cafeteria food

    just for old times.

    By Bianca Consunji

    Z

ERO. If youre a student or are just startingout, chances are youre broke. You dont have

to spend a lot to make your date happy. Be cre-ative. Some ideas might be corny, but so what? Valen-tines day is all about being corny.

    4. Some couples like beingreally cornylike going to aceramic painting shop to painta vase or two together. Youdont have to take it serious-lybetter, in fact, if youre both

    just playing around with paint.Come up with goofy designs;

youll be sure to have a lot ofinside jokes at the end of day.

    P1,000For P1,000, you can already

have a decent meal in amidrange restaurant. However,

save room for other activities soyou dont blow your budget onfood.

    1. Watch a live band. Were

not talking about Big Domeconcerts; small bands in venuessuch as Eastwood are easy tofind and can set the atmosphere

for a little dancing. You can alsogo to a comedy bar if youre in-to that, but be prepared forsome really bad Valentines day

    jokes.2. Watch a play. Instead of a

movie, head to a play. Compa-nies like Repertory Philippinesare sure to have interestingplays, so check out the sched-ules and gear yourself up for anight of culture.

    P5,000Hey there, big spender.

P5,000 is a lot for one day, butif you really want to make theday special, you can go all outon flowers, a movie and a fancydinner. But again, we recom-mend going off the beatentracktraffic will be really bad.

    1. Take a road trip. SinceValentines day falls on a Sun-day, you can take a road trip toa favorite nearby destination.Have lunch at Sonyas Garden, spend the day at Tagaytay High-

lands, head to a beach in Na-sugbuchoose your destina-tion. A change of scenery willdo both of you good.
