The main cause of three putts is a poor first putt, whether it is feebly short, way off-line or far too hard. You then ask yourself to hole a difficult second putt, while still angry with your first.

That’s why the first putt is so crucial to your scores. If you can roll it on the right line with the right pace, not only do you stand a chance of holing it, but you’ll certainly leave a much more

manageable second putt. In fact, hopefully it’s just a tap-in.

Good lag putting is largely instinctive but can be improved with practice. Try these three drills to help...
