Today’s Goals…

I can explain the causes of erosion. I can describe the effects of erosion.

Review…

What is erosion? How is it different than weathering? How do weathering and erosion work

together? What are the four causes of erosion?

More Review…

How does gravity cause erosion? What is it called when gravity alone causes

rocks or sediment to move down hill? What are the four different types of mass

movement? How are the four types of mass movement

different?

Ice

Glaciers are large pieces of ice Glaciers move downhill because of gravity

– They pick up sediments and carry them

Page 7: Today’s Agenda… Flashback Notes on Erosion – Part II BrainPop on Erosion Chapter 11 Review Worksheet (Due Tuesday)

Ice

Glaciers remove the lose pieces of rock from weathered rocks

Glaciers carrying these rocks can scratch and erode rocks as they move

Ice

What are the effects?– Glaciers can remove rock from mountain tops– Produce wider, u-shaped valleys– Figure 12, page 327– Glaciers lay down sediments and then they are

washed away

Wind

How would wind cause erosion? When wind blows loose sediment, it carries

it away Wind that is carrying sediments can also

wear down other rocks, this is called abrasion

Page 10: Today’s Agenda… Flashback Notes on Erosion – Part II BrainPop on Erosion Chapter 11 Review Worksheet (Due Tuesday)

Wind

When wind slows down it will drop sediment – this is called depositon

This could create certain landforms– Sand dunes

Water

How does water cause erosion? When water flows over Earth’s surface it is

called runoff Runoff can carry sediments The faster the water is running, the more

sediment it can carry

Water

Water can flow over Earth’s surface in many ways

Erosion Changes Earth’s Surface

Rock and sediments are moved from one place to another

Where material is removed canyons and valleys form

Where material is deposited deltas, sandbars, and sand dunes are created
