For many of our students, community service is an imperative part of the learning process. By giving back, they’re experiencing life lessons that can enhance their experiences and prepare them to be good citizens and community leaders.

In just the first few months of school, The Interact Club has participated in multiple community service activities throughout the city.

• Students participated in a graffiti cleanup event in an effort to keep San Antonio beautiful.

• Thirteen students (second largest youth group in attendance) participated in a Youth Conference at the Westin River Walk Hotel held by the Rotary Club. Students had the opportunity to interact with other students from all over the region and put together oral hygiene care packages that were sent to a Guatemalan school.

• Students participated in a beach cleanup at Corpus Christi Beach (next to the Texas State Aquarium). They spent the early morning hours cleaning and after they finished they were welcomed to visit the Aquarium. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the clean beach.

• Students helped the City of San Antonio and the Parks and Recreation Department give away free trees at Siclovia. There were 604 trees and 14 species planted in an initiative to increase the tree canopy throughout the city.

The Bobcat Football Team has also kicked off a Community Initiative Program with a visit to the Sunrise Nursing Care Center. About 40 football players took turns serving food, cleaning off tables, visiting, and learning from the residents there. “We were given a tour by a 72 year old resident who we

converted into a Bobcat fan,” says Coach Louis James, SSAHS Head Football Coach. “There were a few tears shed due to sad stories, but there were many more happy stories as the residents were just happy that someone cared to visit and talk to them. I truly believe that many of our young men learned a great deal about life and what the future may hold for them due to the decisions or choices that they make.” Every year, the team plans to use the bye week as a way to help out in our community at different events and locations.

A message from the SuperintendentGreetings! The 1st nine weeks grading period has concluded and I hope your child has performed well. If your child is not meeting expectations academically, it is imperative that you schedule a parent conference with your child’s teacher(s) and jointly develop a plan that will help guide your child to success. Communication between a parent and teacher is

vital to ensure that proper interventions, additional tutoring and other instructional strategies are implemented to improve the learning skills and capabilities of the child.

I am proud to announce that every South San Antonio ISD campus met 2015 State Accountability Standards. Of the eight school districts located in the southern area of San Antonio and Bexar county, South San Antonio ISD and a small, neighboring rural ISD were the only districts in the area to have every campus meet the state standards. Our number of campus distinctions, which compares schools across the state with similar demographics, increased from 21 to 27. This 28% improvement can be attributed to the dedicated effort of our students, teachers and campus administration. We are pleased with the results and will continue to teach, motivate and inspire your children to reach even greater heights.

Our South San High School Early College Academy has enrolled 141 students in the associate’s degree pathway. These students will participate in the Early College New Student Convocation at Palo Alto College in January. Early College classes at South San High School will begin in January, with two courses being offered; Art Appreciation and Kinesiology. If your child needs assistance with the Texas Success Initiative, please contact your child’s counselor and utilize accupalcer.org, which has a link for test prep questions that may be of benefit when taking the TSI exam.

Congratulations to the South San High School volleyball team! This group of hard-working and dedicated student-athletes, led by Coach Pineda and her staff, qualified for the UIL playoffs.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Abelardo Saavedra, Ph.D.Superintendent of Schools

A Message from the Board President As we approach the holiday season, let us reflect on our blessings, spend quality time with our families and renew our hope for a better tomorrow. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we extend our Best Wishes to the South San Community during the upcoming Holiday Season!

The Board of Trustees is truly committed to keeping our school district fiscally solvent and operational. This past year the Board of Trustees adopted our first balanced budget since 2006. We shall continue to increase our reserves towards the Texas Education Agency approved level.

The school board at their February 18, 2015 board meeting approved an in-depth Needs Assessment of all school facilities at the request of the Superintendent www.http//southsanisd.net/schoolboard. Many of our schools are old and will require total reconstruction, renovation, or repair. The Needs Assessment performed by an architectural firm, was very detailed and identified a great need in our schools. The results of the assessment was presented to a committee of community and business people for their review and suggestions on how best to address the needs. It is our hope to bring options to the community which would fix our schools. Our children deserve nothing less.

The school board approved a second Adult/Community Learning Center for the school district. Recently, a dedication was held to celebrate the opening of the Dwight Adult/Community Learning Center. The center is located in the “D” Wing of Dwight Middle School. The center currently offers “free” classes in GED and ESL. We hope to expand our course offerings in the near future. Please spread the good news to family, friends and neighbors. For information call (210) 977-7000.

This Fall Semester is quickly coming to an end. The holidays will allow all of us to “catch our breath” and “recharge our battery.” Many thanks to our teachers and staff for their dedication. Parents we will need your continued support during the busy Spring Semester. Teamwork will bring success!

Happy Holidays,

Connie PradoBoard President

SSAHS Happening: Actor Daniel “Danny” Trejo pays visit to South San Antonio High School

On October 13, South San Antonio HS had the privilege of hosting Mr. Danny Trejo for an impromptu presentation to the juniors and seniors. His message was one of support and encouragement emphasizing education and human character. Mr. Trejo made sure

everyone understood the importance of simply being a good person; that if you are a good person, that eventually good things will come. At the end of the presentation, he graciously put on our South San t-shirt and gave a big thumbs up as he acknowledged our students.

South San Antonio ISD to be featured in National Publication

South San Antonio ISD was recently showcased in a national publication, the District Management Journal (DMJ). The DMJ helps address the most pressing and important management challenges facing American educators. In the case

study, Funding District Priorities from Within, Saavedra partnered with the District Management Council (DMC) to review staffing in both general education and special education. As a result of this work, South San Antonio ISD and DMC were able to identify approximately $8 million in potential funds to shift to district priorities. The district was able to fully operationalize $3.5 million of these spending shifts in just a matter of months.

South San ISD Superintendent distinguished panelist on education forums

Superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra was invited to numerous speaking engagements regarding education trends in Texas. On August 28, the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce asked Saavedra to be a panelist on topics ranging from school finance to the significance of

early college and CTE programs. On October 2, Saavedra, along with School Board President Connie Prado, Chief Academic Officer Delinda Castro, and Shepard Band Director Lisa Wilburn took questions at the TASA/TASB Convention in Austin, TX. They spoke to educators from across the state about how SSAISD is preparing all students to be future-ready no matter the pathway chosen after graduation. On October 6, Saavedra went to Houston to be part of the “Powering Growth and Influence” panel at the Bank of New York Mellon. The panel consisted of a variety of Hispanic professionals with diverse backgrounds discussing the influence of Hispanics in the growth of our economy. The following day, October 7, Saavedra joined Dr. Betty Merchant, Dean of UTSA’s College of Education and Human Development and Mr. Bobby Blount, President of Bexar County School Boards Coalition on a panel that discussed the impact of the 84th Legislative Session on Public Schools. This panel discussion took place at the UTSA downtown campus. Saavedra is also scheduled to cohost a meeting on Early Colleges with Bruce Leslie, Chancellor of Alamo Colleges, on December 4.

Armstrong ES – Armstrong ES kicked off PBIS with a pep rally for all students. The PBIS team introduced each facet of the program from expectations, incentives, and demonstrating PRIDE. Astro PRIDE stands for Polite, Responsible, Inspiring, Dedicated, Everyone, Everywhere, Every time. Team members Sonia Mata, Amber Grey, Laura Mendoza, Sonia Isaac, Veronica Garino, Yvonne Martinez, and Kristina Johnson concluded the rally with the “Whip and Nae Nae.”

Athens ES – Athens ES teachers participated in Day 2 of professional development in Thinking Maps: A Language for Learning on October 12. Thinking Maps instructional strategies were written into campus, classroom, and teacher goals. Thinking Maps has identified eight fundamental thinking skills and describing how these skills work in unison. These eight cognitive skills are used together by students for lifelong learning across disciplines. By linking each thinking skill to a unique and dynamic visual representation, the language of Thinking Maps becomes a tool set for supporting effective instructional practice and improving student performance.

Benavidez ES – Benavidez ES would like you to join them for their annual Science Fair on December 17 from 3:15pm – 5:00pm. Spectators can come early to view the science fair projects in the cafeteria and see the wonderful work of the Benavidez Patriot students!

Carrillo ES – The Carrillo P.A.W.S (Positive and Wonderful Students) team introduced the staff to PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) on Wednesday, October 14. The staff included teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, office personnel, the police officer, and administration. A scavenger hunt lead the staff to model appropriate hallway behavior, one of the areas Carrillo will concentrate on this year. Selfies were part of the tasks and snacks were given along the way. The P.A.W.S team ended the kick-off meeting with a PowerPoint presentation by the PBIS Team informing the staff of upcoming implementation of PBIS, which will launch campus-wide next school year.

Five Palms ES – The initial meeting of the newly formed Five Palms Chess Club, sponsored by 3rd grade teacher Mr. Fransisco Galdeano, took place earlier this month. The students are eagerly learning the strategic board game which will teach them logic, attention to detail, and discipline.

Hutchins ES – This October, 209 students at Hutchins ES enjoyed a root beer float for the first monthly perfect attendance rally of the year. Hutchins will continue to host monthly celebrations for students with perfect attendance. On Tuesday, November 10, Hutchins also held a Family Learning Night. Students presented oral reports of famous people throughout history as part of their Super Writer’s Wax Museum. During the Family Learning Night, the school library allowed families to purchase books from the Scholastic Book Fair.

Kindred ES – Kindred ES will be hosting its first Gifted and Talented showcase on December 9, 2015 introducing The Bengals. The Bengals are the newly named GT population and they will be displaying their hard work featuring 1st through 3rd grade invention conventions. Students in grades 3rd through 5th will display a photojournalism project, “A day in the life.”

Madla ES – Fourth grade students from Madla ES were invited to attend one of the highlighted events for the Presidential Inauguration Week for Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio. The event was a one-hour play entitled Mariachi Girl, by Roxanne Schroeder-Arce and it took place on Thursday October 8, 2015 at 10am at the Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s Auditorium.

Palo Alto ES – On October 7, Palo Alto ES held its 3rd annual Pink Ram Walk in support of breast cancer awareness. Many from the community came out to walk for friends and loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Melissa Esquivel, whose daughter is a 3rd grader, is one of those community members. She is a breast cancer survivor of 8 years. South San Antonio HS students helped hand out water to the walkers. The walk ended with a ceremonial releasing of balloons and a moment of silence as participants remembered those who lost their battle. Palo Alto ES would like to thank Angie Razo and Katherine Reyes from PRESA who donated their time to help, and to Coach Israel Lopez for putting together this event and continuing to help bring awareness.

Price ES – Price ES is very excited to be starting The Bow Tie Club with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade boys which will support PBIS. The Bow Tie Club will meet once a month and go over manners and etiquette for young men. They will cover things such as how to hold on a door open for someone when walking into a building, placing a napkin on their lap while eating, and how to give up their seat for an elderly person when there is not enough room to sit. Mr. Jesse Villanueva and Mr. Juan Solis will be the new club sponsors. One way to spot a member of The Bow Tie Club will be when a young man is wearing his bow tie. Look out for great manners at Price Elementary!

Kazen MS – Kazen MS is achieving perfect attendance success by offering students exciting monthly incentives. Since the start of September, students who achieved perfect (monthly) attendance have been selected to attend field trips and events, such as; The San Antonio Zoo, Dance and a Movie, Fall Fest, and The River Walk. Way to go, Panthers.

Dwight MS – One of Dwight’s Core Belief is to build positive and trusting relationships between students and teachers. They believe that in building these positive relationships, students will experience individual success and high academic achievement. Dwight MS has transformed itself into an educationally safe and secure community for our future leaders this 2015-16 school year. The Bobcats have created countless opportunities for students and families to reclaim their pride in the campus through various programs and activities. Dwight has the Cub Camp for upcoming 6th graders and their families to visit the campus and get groomed for success in middle school. The campus also has exploded in school pride like never before with the all grades and gender Spirit Club (mix of dance and cheer), where students encourage and inspire each other at pep-rallies. Dwight also has developed a school newspaper that involves the community through local restaurant reviews, fashion, local music, school sports, and highlighting students for their unique accomplishments. This has given students an opportunity to freely write and interview in an expository sense.

Shepard MS – On September 28, Shepard MS held its initial parent meeting for those students selected to join Young Achievers for the fall semester. Based on their GPA’s, applications were given to the top 8th grade students and 17 of those students were selected to kick off the program. In the spring, the program will be cut to the Top 2 based on PSAT scores from the December 2015 administration of the exam. Shepard is one of only four middle schools city-wide that has the program, which focuses on preparing students for college-entrance process, provides scholarship guidance, college fieldtrips, weekly workshops, and a mentor in the spring.

Zamora MS – Pink Out is an annual volleyball game played at Zamora MS where the girls volleyball players honor the people taken by breast cancer and support those fighting this horrible disease. The players wore pink and asked the spectators to also wear pink. A donation from the game was made to the Susan Komen Foundation.

Alternative Center - Students and parents participated in our monthly Parent Engagement Meetings held on September 19 and October 10. Our campus counselor Mrs. Morales and Parent/Community Action Team members (Mrs. Lerma, Mr. Ramirez, and Mr. Urias) have partnered with the Mexican American Unity Council, ChildSafe, and Food Bank in order to provide meaningful information as well as valuable resources.

South San Antonio ISD Police Explorers

South San Antonio ISD Police Department has been involved with the South San Antonio ISD Police Explorer Program at the high School. There are currently 12 students in the program

who are learning about the law enforcement profession. These students experience a wide range of hands on experiences. In October, the explorers were assigned to a district police officer at the high school football game to learn what district officers do during an event. The police department furnished these students with SSAISD Explorers shirts.

South San Antonio ISD opens second Parent Center

The South San Antonio Independent School District opened a second Parent Center at Dwight MS on Friday, September 25. The Parent Center offers free programs to anyone within our community, to

include naturalization classes, GED, ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and basic computer skills.

Chef’s Corner - The Perfect Turkey

As we near Thanksgiving, I often get asked, “As a Chef, what is your favorite way to prepare turkey?” Honestly, when it comes to Turkey, it is one of the rare times I am an absolute traditionalist. Frying is a

very dangerous alternate approach which causes hundreds of accidents annually and in my opinion yields inferior results. Smoking is a nice change of pace as well, but roasting is the way to go with this humble fowl in my opinion. There are several approaches to roasting…open basting, covered and even upside down. I personally roast covered the first two to three hours and uncovered the last hours or so basting occasionally. It is all a matter of preference, whether you need to have that delicious crispy skin or you prefer your breast to be as moist as possible, it’s up to you. Usually it takes about 4 hours at 325 degrees for a medium sized bird, and you are looking for an internal temperature of 180 in the thighs and 165 in the breast. If your stuffing the bird you will have to adjust the timing approximately 45 minutes depending on the size of the bird. Be sure to let the roast rest for 15 minutes before serving to allow for the juices to redistribute. Also be sure to rinse your bird and cavity (removing the giblets), before seasoning. I recommend keeping it simple with a light seasoning of salt and pepper and glaze of butter. If you have great ingredients a little s/p is all you need! Most importantly enjoy this meal with your family and share your love of cooking with those you love, Enjoy!
