1. Niger River

Heart of the empires of Ghana and Mali. Allowed the population of Ghana and Mali to thrive by providing food. It was a great place to trade (gold and salt) because it was located near the Sahara desert. (Closest river to the Sahara)

2. Gold and Salt The rulers of Ghana

and Mali gained wealth and power by controlling the gold and salt trade. Salt came from the Sahara Desert north of the empires. Gold came from mines in the south.

3. Silent Barter A process in which people

exchange (trade) goods without contacting each other directly.

4. Ghana Empire along the Niger River.

Controlled the gold and salt trade. Polytheistic.

5. MaliGreat leader was Mansa Musa.

Controlled the gold and salt trade. Muslim.

6. Mansa Musa Mali’s greatest and most famous

ruler, he was a devout Muslim. He made a famous pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca that helped spread Mali’s fame.

7. TimbuktuA major trade city in Mali. Center

of the gold and salt trade. There were libraries and schools

that taught Arabic, which became the main language for learning and trade.

8. GriotsA west African

storyteller. Helped pass the history of their people down through the generations. Griots told stories and proverbs: a proverb is a short saying of wisdom or truth.
