Moving to Tobacco Free
Background
• 2011-Ohio Board of Regents passed Tobacco Free Resolution
• April 2013-Board of Trustees-all OSU campuses go tobacco free
• Implementation committee charge-develop, propose, and lead the implementation of Tobacco Free plan through 2015
• Eight subcommittees formed involving over 100 faculty, staff and students

• Considered input from 430 comments (70% positive) and over 800 individuals
• Benchmarked over 30 tobacco and smoke free institutions of higher education
• Engaged with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Tobacco Free College Campus Initiative (TFCCI)
• Involved Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Board of Regents
Tobacco Free Details
• Promoting a healthy environment and encouraging a culture of compliance
• No tobacco use inside or outside, in cars on university property, in parking lots, anywhere that is OSU property and facilities
• Extensive communications plan including signage, student volunteers, wellness ambassadors, university security and police, facilities staff, parking attendants, etc.
• Training kits for supervisors, videos for students, etc.• Assessment plan• Impact on neighborhoods is a special concern

• Faculty, staff, and students are not required to quit using tobacco products, but they cannot use them on campus
• Culture of Compliance has been a successful strategy at numerous universities• People follow rules• Extensive communications plan• Rely on “peer pressure” and cooperation of our
community• Enforcement remains an option, just like any policy
