Motivation: The Values Factor

Are you interested in knowing how to motivate other people? If so, how much do you

know about what these other people value, what they hold near and dear? Lou Tice

often told the story of working with three quarterbacks, when he was a high school

football coach. He asked each one what was important to him about playing the

game.

One said he did it for the glory of God and to make his mom and dad proud. The

second said it made him feel powerful, because he liked the idea of breaking through

limits and defeating opponents who were trying as hard as they could to stop him.

The third player said that football was his ticket out of poverty and the ghetto,

because he hoped to get a football scholarship that would pay his way through

college.

Now, there was no way that Lou could motivate all three of these kids in the same

way. The things that were important to one didn't matter at all to the others, and vice

versa. In the final analysis, this story proves that value motivate us to do what we do.

The president of one of our client organizations took it upon himself to personally

facilitate our program to all of his employees, so he could get to know exactly what

was important to them, both personally and professionally. In the process, the

organization moved from #11 to #1 in his state, and from #36 to #5 in the nation.

So if you want to motivate others, whether it is your team, your employees, your kids

or your spouse, you want to present the motivation in terms that mean something to

them, not necessarily to you. And that means you first need to understand their

values.

New Clubs! Thank you to everyone involved in spreading the word…and creating wonderful opportunities for people to become involved in Toastmasters!! Chamber of Commerce – Bolingbrook, Illinois On November 18, a Demo Meeting was held at the Chamber of Commerce in Bolingbrook at 11:30 a.m. Several Toastmasters volunteered to help out with the event, including Darrel Felty, Dick Poirier, Jenny Hamby, Elaine Sommer, Joseph Martinek, Pat Reisdorf, and Angela Mullin. It was largely attended and Kevin O’Keeffe, Executive Director, was excited about chartering the club. O’Keefe sees the new club as an answer to fulfill the Chambers mission to extend educational programs to the community. A follow up meeting is scheduled after the first of the year to start the chartering process. When chartered, the new club will be in Area 62. Crest Hill Speakers and Leaders – Crest Hill, Illinois A team of Toastmasters from Area 61 is also working on starting a new club at the Crest Hill Library in Crest Hill, Illinois. Volunteers, including Joseph Martinek, Paul Rak, Rich Lane, Chris Boyk, Bruce Murdoch, and John Stanton, have held a series of informational meetings and are planning a Demo Meeting on January 23, 2015. The team is actively advertising the Demo Meeting and they continue to thrive on the exciting prospect of offering Toastmasters to more people in Area 61.

Never underestimate your ability to make someone

else’s life better – even if you never know it.

Iroquois Early Risers Reach 20 Years of Shaping Lives!!

Iroquois Early Risers Toastmasters Club marked its 20th anniversary in June 2015. In honor of the occasion, the club hosted a dinner on Wednesday, November 18th, from 6-8 p.m. at The Club Café, inside The Watseka Theatre, in Watseka, Illinois.

Lorraine Smith, the Toastmaster of the evening kicked off the event with a warm welcome and Tony Williams followed with an invocation.

Dinner consisted of a delicious brisket and was served with a variety of other delightful pot luck entrées.

After dinner, Ella Haberkorn and Carolyn Looker shared fun stories to highlight a variety of memories shared by the club members.

Joy Williams hosted a Table Topics session.

To wrap up the event, variety of awards were presented to club members by Matt Woyner, Area 61 Director, and Angie Mullin, Division F Director. Paul Wilson, Club President, accepted the award for the club’s 20 years of influencing others and shaping many people’s lives.

Since 1995, the club has been dedicated to helping people become better speakers and leaders, and they continue to leave a wonderful legacy behind.

Members of the public were invited to the celebration to learn more about Toastmasters.

YOUR CLUB CAN BE DISTINGUISHED!

IS IT YOUR CLUB’S YEAR TO BE DISTINGUISHED, SELECT DISTINGUISHED, OR PRESIDENTIAL DISTINGUISHED?

Here are some TIPS for Your Club’s Success!!

Can Prospective Members Find You?

Ensure all club web pages, social networking sites and marketing materials are updated with current meeting and officer information.

Are Your Meetings Fun and Beneficial?

Send out Club Program Quality Surveys and/or conduct personal interviews to gather feedback about meeting quality and collect educational goals from each of the club members. Use these results to help shape club goals and Club Success Plans.

Verify that your club has a way to track educational goals. EasySpeak is a great club management tool. If you are not using it, use the educational goal tracking spreadsheet distributed via e-mail in August 2015.

Ensure your club has a working mentoring program. If not, implement one.

Are Club Officers Accountable?

Twice a year, summer and winter, a minimum of 4 officers need to be trained at a Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) or a TLI Make up Training Session.

Complete a Club Success Plan and share it with the club members and the Area Director.

Present "Moments of Truth" to the club. Use these results to help shape club goals and your Club Success Plan.

Complete an event calendar. Include at least 1 Membership Growth Campaign per Quarter. Ask Club VPPRs and VPMs to share their ideas and add their planned events.

Prepare your club for a club contest. Encourage members to step out of their comfort zone, because this is the only way to grow.

Start promoting attendance at the District 54 events, especially the conferences. Does your club need additional assistance? District Leaders can help.

Clubs with less than 12 members are encouraged to get a club coach. Seek help from your Area Director to obtain a club coach.

Oswego Toastmasters Concludes Youth Leadership Program Village of Montgomery, Ill. - Sept. 10, 2015 Members of Oswego Toastmasters, led by Theresa Sperling and Louis Kreppert, coordinated and facilitated a Youth Leadership program benefitting middle school and high school students in the Village of Montgomery.

The eight (8) week program focused on helping the students practice skills needed for effective communication and leadership.

Working in groups of 6 - 10 students, they practiced skills on:

Organizing a Speech

Listening

Body Gestures Pictured: Louis Kreppert and Youth Leadership Program

Voice and Vocabulary

Participants

Impromptu Speaking

Each student presented 2 - 3 prepared speeches on various topics ranging from sports, church mission trips to music, and more.

One student presented a speech punctuated with beautiful singing. I was nervous at first, but after some time my confidence soared, she said.

Feedback and Evaluations

Each week the students learned how to provide positive and constructive feedback.

In the second week the students were introduced to Table Topics. At first, it was hard for them to talk on a topic for more than 15 seconds, but by the eighth week they were averaging 45 seconds to a minute. It was wonderful to see the students learn and build confidence. This program was successful in teaching the youth of today how to be more confident, organized and skilled in both communications and leadership one parent said. Pictured: Theresa Sperling

Proclamation

To mark the official end of the program, Theresa Sperling, a Village of Montgomery Village Trustee, presented a proclamation declaring September 10th, 2015 - Toastmasters Day.
