CincyNature Camps are a fun way for kids to actively challenge their minds and bodies and use their creativity and imaginations in a natural setting. Each camp offers unique, age-appropriate activities that expose children to new and exciting outdoor adventures in a safe and friendly environment. Camps are week-long, nature-focused day camps for children and teens ages 3 to 13. Camps take place from June through the second week of August at Cincinnati Nature Center’s two separate sites: Rowe Woods in Milford and Long Branch Farm & Trails in Goshen.

UPDATES AT CincyNature Camp

3

Longtime CincyNature Camp participants and supporters may note a few changes in camp this summer. Rowe Woods Camp Director, Bill Creasey, will be retiring soon from Cincinnati Nature Center. Long Branch Farm & Trails Camp Director, Jason Neumann, will remain at Cincinnati Nature Center but is moving on to a new position within the organization. Bill and Jason are pleased to pass the torch of CincyNature Camp supervision to their mentee and fellow camp enthusiast Eve Smallwood, Youth Program Coordinator. Join us in wishing Bill and Jason well in their new adventures!

A word from BillDear Camp Supporters,

Whether you have been a camper, CIT (teen volunteer), parent, or counselor, it has been my delight to work with you over the years. Some of you were even my first campers back in the 1970s when I started at Cincinnati Nature Center and have now brought your own children to camp. What a pleasure to work with children and staff in an outdoor setting as we explore and discover the wonders of our natural world together every summer. It has been truly one of the best and most rewarding parts of my job!

I have worked at Cincinnati Nature Center for well over four decades and the end of 2016 will be the conclusion of my tenure here at one of the best jobs in the world! Many of you learned that during this past summer of 2015 when Eve Smallwood and I co-directed the summer camp season at Rowe Woods. As a colleague throughout the years, I knew Eve was a great educator and was passionate to get kids (and adults) engaged in outdoor learning experiences. But, it was this past summer when I saw Eve shine in her element of making camp a fun and expansive experience for everyone involved from campers to counselors. She does an amazing job!

Retirement is a natural process just like graduation or buying a house, but when you leave it’s important to know that what you developed and nurtured will continue to grow and flourish. I will leave the Nature Center’s camp program with deep peace in my heart knowing that I am leaving it in the gifted and competent hands of Eve Smallwood, my colleague and close personal friend.

Camp changes lives!

A word from JasonDear Camp Families,

In the spring of 1992, I was hired for my first summer as a staff person at a residential camp that served children from inner city Detroit. It was the most challenging thing I had done to that point in my life…but I absolutely loved it. Reflecting back, it was that camp experience that inspired me to enter the field of nature education and later led to my move to Cincinnati.

Over a span of 21 summers, I have trained hundreds of staff and counselors-in-training to facilitate farm and nature camp experiences for thousands of campers at Long Branch Farm & Trails. Camp has always been a seasonal joy for me so it is with mixed emotions that I suggested to my supervisor that I would be willing to transition from camp to a new challenge. My mind has been eased by the knowledge that Eve Smallwood, Cincinnati Nature Center’s new camp director and dyed-in-the-wool camp person, has a watchful eye on all Nature Center camps.

My role as Public Programs Manager has broadened to allow me to expand summer public & family programs and drop in opportunities for guests. While I am no longer running camps, I look forward to seeing you on the trails at Rowe Woods and Long Branch.

In the spirit of camp,

Children will select their own pre-made mythical creature to use in “pretend time” as we create our own tiny worlds in nature. Where should their homes be built? How would little elves defend against an invasion of tree trolls? Daily explorations for perfect dwellings, as seen through the eyes of fairies, guide children to find the real owners

of these homes such as woodpeckers, voles, or chipmunks. In an enchanted world, how might a water dweller at the pond look different from a tree dweller? We’ll find out together! EARTH ART at Rowe Woods Instructor: Adrian Vance Hawk

Ages 7 - 9, June 20 - June 24, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Can you find art in nature? Look for colors, textures, and patterns among rustling leaves and swirling water. Use nature as your inspiration to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE materials to make cool crafts and useful items. Through storytelling, books, hikes, and activities, we will celebrate the earth in all its beauty. We’ll spend less time out on the trails than other camps due to the fun art projects we’ll be working on inside.

ECO-ENGINEERS at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Amy Taghiof

Ages 7 - 9, July 11 - July 15, Session #1, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Ages 7 - 9, July 18 - July 22, Session #2, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Nature is full of fantastic builders. In this camp we will explore cool structures found in nature - animal homes, spider webs, and some of nature’s neatest plants - and discover what makes these natural builders so remarkable. We’ll then put our creativity and imaginations to the test to see if we can build our own things as well as nature can. How have humans copied nature in creating things we use all the time? We’ll explore the forest, field and creek to look for animal homes and structures. We’ll build forts and design our own habitat. The only thing campers need is imagination!

INSECT INVESTIGATION at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Angel Gardner or Katherine Scott

Ages 7 - 9, June 13 - June 17, Session #1, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189 Instructor: Angel Gardner

Ages 7 - 9, August 8 - August 12, Session #2, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189 Instructor: Katherine Scott

Look closely at the wings of a dragonfly or the larval stage of a midge using microscopes and hand lens. Decide how ants are alike and different from people. How can you tell insects apart from other invertebrates like spiders, pill bugs, or millipedes? We will be spending the week searching for and investigating insects in our fields, ponds, forests, and stream. Can you find all 4 stages of metamorphosis this week? Can you find an insect eating? Sleeping? Flying? Laying eggs? Hunting? Why are insects important to humans, and which ones cause us trouble? From the bees that pollinate our food to the musical crickets, we’ll look a little deeper at the fascinating little critters that share our lives.

THINGS WITH WINGS at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Amy Taghiof

Ages 7-9, June 20 - June 24, Session #1, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Ages 7-9, July 25 - July 29, Session #2, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Join us as we explore the world of creatures that fly - birds, insects, and even a mammal! Using stories, creative games, and plenty of time in field, forest, creek and pond we’ll learn about the diversity of our flighty friends and what makes these creatures so unique. Create your own flying friend. What if we could fly? Come and discover the mysteries of our winged wonders.

Ages 7-9, August 8 - August 12, Session #2, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Fully immerse yourself in nature as we explore the diverse water environments at Cincinnati Nature Center! We’ll have an up-close experience with ponds, the stream, Crosley Lake, and even dew drops and rain as we inspect the science of water and the creatures that live in it. Water art, games, stories, songs, and simple experiments will help demonstrate how water impacts the world around us!

BIGFOOT EXPEDITION at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Amy Taghiof

Ages 8 - 12, June 13 - June 17, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

We didn’t find him last summer! Will we be successful this year? In this science based camp, we will explore the legend of Bigfoot as we hike through some of more remote areas of Cincinnati Nature Center. What kinds of evidence do animals leave behind? How do we know what kinds of animals live at the Nature Center when we may not see them? How can the things animals leave behind (nests, bones, scat and trails) tell us about the secret lives they lead? We will also discuss the importance of myth and stories and how they bond communities together and are used to explain the unknown. As a final investigation we will learn about the unreliability of eyewitness accounts. The search is on!

WILDLY CREATIVE! at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Barbara Moss

Ages 8 - 12, July 18 - July 22, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Enter our camp’s well-stocked art studio to make masks, puppets, and mini-costumes of your favorite animals and plants at Cincinnati Nature Center. Explore the trails and special places at Rowe Woods for inspiration. Write and sketch in your nature journal to plan your daily ar tworks and performances. Then tell your stories through the imagined voices of the characters you have crafted from our unlimited supply of art materials. Express yourself and your love of nature through plays, poems, and special projects. Be prepared to . . . get creative and get wild!

FOSSIL HUNTERS at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Sheila Riley

Ages 9 - 12, July 6 - July 8, 3 Day, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $144; with family membership $115

Go where no campers have gone before. This is the only program offered at Rowe Woods where visitors are allowed to keep the fossils they discover! Learn why Cincinnati is known throughout the world for its Ordovician fossils, imagine the waters that covered this land when these fossils were made, and explore the land and streams in search of specimens to add to your collection. Budding paleontologists will meet like-minded campers at this higher-level science camp.

PIONEER PASTIMES at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Stephanie Williford

Ages 9 - 11, June 27 - July 1, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Pioneer children had adventures and fun in a wild time where people lived by their creativity and used nature to survive, unaided by the technology we have today. Go back in time with us to try out hands-on activities pioneers would have done, such as building games, churning butter and making food, quilting, making rope, dying fabric, weaving, and candle-making. Special guests will present various demonstrations of skills that were necessary for successful survival during the settling of these lands.

REACH FOR THE STARS at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Sheila Riley

Ages 9 - 12, August 1 - August 5, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Exploring outer space is more than looking up at the night sky. You’ll have an “out of this world” experience while we discover stars, the moon, planets and more- during the day! Explorations abound when you gather survival materials to build your own moon base in the forest. Just like astronauts search for life forms on Mars, we will journey to the creek to see what we will discover. This week will be a blast when you build an earth-powered rocket and engineer a solar oven. By the end of the week you’ll be ready to reach for the stars!

ART IN THE HEART OF NATURE at Rowe WoodsInstructor: Barbara Moss

Ages 10 - 13, July 25 - July 29, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM, $246; with family membership $189

Nature provides everything we need for this one-of-a-kind camp that puts you in the heart of nature and inspires you to find beauty in natural materials. Arrange colorful leaves in patterns in the lake or stream and then come back the next day to see what has happened. Make sculptures from creek clay—what will they look like in a few days? Create twig artworks that may not last through the week . . . or may become homes for Cincinnati Nature Center critters. Make your own rock art and see how long the picture or message stays visible. We will take photos or videos or make drawings to capture our creations, but we will let nature do what it does and watch each creation change over time. This art class reminds us to slow down, look closely, and really see the beauty of each moment in nature.

Q: What makes CincyNature Camps special?

A: All CincyNature Camps are designed with the goal of providing fun, hands-on, educational experiences in nature for children ages 3 to 13 years. Our camps challenge kids to be active and creative while developing confidence and social skills in a natural setting. Our camp instructors make camps engaging and joyful for kids while promoting inclusiveness, safety and age-appropriateness.

Q: How do you ensure safety at CincyNature Camps?

A: Camp counselors know that camper safety is the first priority. All staff are trained in First Aid and CPR prior to the start of camp. At LBFT, water safety protocol demands that campers and staff wear life jackets when canoeing and during more challenging stream hikes.

Q: I’ve never been to Long Branch Farm & Trails; is it going to be out of my way?

A: Believe it or not, LBFT is only about 10 miles north of RW, located just off of OH-28 and close to Loveland. The beauty of LBFT is its remoteness-fewer members hike daily at LBFT, allowing campers more space and freedom to explore. If you think Rowe Woods is a hidden gem, wait until you discover Long Branch Farm & Trails!

Q: How are camps different at LBFT than at the Rowe Woods site? A: We’re excited to offer a range of survival and aquatic exploration camps at LBFT this summer for children ages 6-13, under the expertise of two very experienced and qualified camp instructors (see Mary Gordon and Laurie Nichols under “Camp Instructors,” p. 4 and 5), plus additional trained assistants. And as a parent, you can rest assured knowing your child will explore the natural world with the guidance of our well-trained camp instructors and assistants.

Q: The description says this camp includes a wide range of ages. Is this correct?

A: Each camp has something special to offer to all the children within the designated age range. Camps with mixed-age children at Fernwood Shelter are separated into smaller, age-appropriate groups to guarantee the best experience.

Q: Can I ensure that my child will be in the same group as his/her friend when campers are divided into groups? A: Absolutely, as long as the children are the same age, you can contact the Registrar at (513) 831-1711, ext. 129 to request that your child be placed in the same small group as a friend registered for the same camp.

Q: Do you accept children with special needs?

A: This depends on the special need. Often we can accommodate children with special needs. Please see p. 5.

Q: My young child is outside of the designated age range for a camp; can he still attend? He’s “advanced” for his age. A: Camps are carefully designed for specific age groups and, within camps at Fernwood Shelter, children are further separated into similarly aged groups to ensure the best quality experience at camp. We do not allow children outside of the designated age range to join in camp for the following reasons:

• Young children often lack the endurance for some of our activities.

• Young children often lack the social maturity to deal with older campers.

• Enrolling a child in a camp designed for older children may inhibit either the young child or the older campers.

Q: My child has food allergies (peanuts, milk, wheat, etc). How do you accommodate?

A: Over the years, we have had many children with food allergies. Action depends upon severity of the allergy. Children with strong peanut allergies are often allowed to eat away from children with peanut products. We will ask parents’ permission to discuss a child’s allergies with his/her group in an effort to educate other campers about the reasons for our actions.

Q: May I attend camp with my child?

A: Our well-trained counselors provide experiences that help increase your child’s confidence in an inclusive, age-appropriate environment. Little Acorns is the only CincyNature Camp in which a parent/guardian will attend with their child. Please see page 10 for more details.

• You asked for an increased number of camp sessions.

4 We have added over ten additional sessions this summer!

• You asked for more wilderness skills like survival and fort building.

4 We have scheduled eight survival-themed camps at Long Branch Farm & Trails!

• You asked for more variety.

4 We’ve added lots of new camp themes while keeping old favorites! Check out the camp descriptions to find the ones that sound perfect for your camper.

Weren’t able to give feedback last summer? If your child attends one or more CincyNature Camp sessions in 2016, watch your email for an opportunity to fill out our camp survey after all camp sessions have finished in August 2016.
