TO USE THE L1 IN THE SECOND LANGUAGE CLASSROOM OR NOT....

TELLE est la question....

YOU USE THE L1?!!

CAVEATS & CLARIFICATIONS

1) Belief that the L1 be used in “beginner level” classrooms (sparingly at the intermediate level).

2) L1 used only when needed and primarily for lexical and form-related comparisons during lectures/discussions.

3) Does not imply that the use of the L1 is superior (in defense against those who would consider L1 use bad pedagogy).

4) Exclusive use of the L2 when students are performing in-class tasks (no exceptions).

BEGINNER EXPERIENCE LESS OVERWHELMINGNovice learners of a second language often exhibit low confidence in their proficiency with the L2....

Exclusive use of the L2 can be overwhelming for some of these students...

And as Stephen Krashen would remind us...

LEADING BY EXAMPLE...My teacher is bilingual...maybe I should be too.

*Political sensitivity: Creates for occasional harmonious comparisons of both languages in helping with language learning, rather than an outright BAN on the use of French.

So with all the possible benefits of using the L1...why

the irrational fear??
