COOLING SYSTEM

The CM mower engine must operate at thecorrect temperature to obtain maximumefficiency and service life. This is dependent onthe cooling system.

Always fill the system with a 50/50 solution ofpermanent antifreeze and clear water.

Checking the Coolant Level

NOTE: Check the coolant level daily or afterevery 10 hours of operation. The engineshould be cold when coolant level ischecked.

Open the hood, and check the coolant recoveryreservoir located next to the battery. The fluidshould be between the low and the full markson the reservoir.

If the coolant recovery reservoir is empty, remove the radiator cap A and add a 50/50solution of water and antifreeze until the radiatoris full. Then add the water antifreeze solution tothe coolant recovery reservoir until it is to the fulllevel.

WARNING: THE COOLING SYSTEM OPE-RATES UNDER PRESSURE CONTROLLEDBY THE RADIATOR CAP. IT IS DANGEROUSTO REMOVE THE CAP WHILE THE SYSTEMIS HOT. ALWAYS COVER THE CAP WITH ATHICK CLOTH AND TURN IT SLOWLYCOUNTERCLOCKWISE TO THE FIRSTSTOP. ALLOW ALL PRESSURE TO ESCAPEBEFORE REMOVING THE CAP COM-PLETELY.

If the coolant level is below the low mark on thereservoir, add a 50/50 solution of water andantifreeze to the coolant recovery reservoirbringing the level to the full mark.

Be sure that the radiator fins are clear of chaffand dirt to allow free air movement.

Draining and Flushing the Cooling System

NOTE: Drain and flush the radiator andengine block every 12 months. Refill with a50/50 mixture of permanent antifreeze andclear water.

To drain the cooling system:

1. Use a suitable receptacle to catch theused coolant. Remove the radiator capand open the radiator drain valve B, andengine block drain valve A.

2. After the coolant has drained, place a waterhose in the radiator filler neck and run waterthrough the system. When water is flowingfrom the block drain valve, start the engine. When the water flowing from the drain valve,is free of discoloration and sediment, stop theengine and remove the hose. Allow all waterto drain from the system through the drainvalves.

3. Close the drain valve and slowly refill thesystem with a 50/50 solution of permanentantifreeze and clear water. Fill until thecoolant level is approximately 1.2 cm-2.5cm (1/2"-1") below the bottom of the fillerneck. Do not fill beyond this level.

4. Clean the radiator cap and cap seal andinstall the cap.

5. Fill the coolant recovery reservoir bringing thefluid level up until it is between the full andlow marks on the reservoir.

6. Pull out the front screen D upward andremove chaff, dust, or other foreignsubstances. The foreign substances can bedropped onto the ground through the rubberat the lower part.

7. Pull out the radiator screen C and clean it.

8. Run the engine unti l normal operatingtemperature is reached, then stop the engine.Recheck the coolant level when the engine iscold and add addit ional coolant asnecessary.

IMPORTANT: Never run the engine when thecooling system is empty. Do not add cold wateror cold antifreeze solution if the engine is hot.

LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE

Fan Belt

NOTE: Check the condition of the fan beltafter every 50 hours of operation. Check fanbelt tension after every 200 hours ofoperation.

A belt-driven fan located at the front of the enginedraws air through the fins of the radiator to lowerthe temperature of the radiator coolant.

When 9-11 kg (20-25 lbs.) of thumb pressure isapplied midway between the belt pulleys, acorrectly tightened belt will deflect 10 mm-15 mm(7/16"-9/16").

If the fan belt is slipping, fan efficiency is lowered, resulting in the engine running too hot. If the beltis too tight, the life of the alternator bearing will beshortened. If the fan belt shows signs of crackingor fraying, install a new one.

To adjust fan belt tension:

1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts A.

WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT TOLOOSEN OR TIGHTEN MOUNTINGBOLTS WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING.

2. Pry the alternator away from the engine andtighten the mounting bolts.

3. Recheck belt deflection.

BATTERY

The CM mower is equipped with a BCI group45, 12-bolt battery with a minimum coldcranking ability of 325 amps at-18°C (0°F)

Make sure the battery connections are tight andfree of corrosion. A solution of baking soda andwater may be used to wash the outside surfaceand terminals of the battery when necessary. However, make sure the solution does not getinside the battery. After cleaning, wash thebattery with clean water, then apply a smallamount of petroleum jelly to the terminals toprevent corrosion.

In freezing temperatures, a good battery chargemust be maintained. If the battery becomesdischarged or run down, the electrolyte becomesweak and may freeze, causing damage to thecase. If you must add water, use distilled water.Add the water just before using the tractor so thatthe water will mix with the electrolyte during thecharging process, thus preventing the water fromfreezing.

To determine the battery charge, check thespecific gravity of the electrolyte.

Checking the Electrolyte Level

NOTE: Check the battery electrolyte levelafter every 50 hours of operation.

WARNING: ALWAYS CHECK THEELECTROLYTE LEVEL WITH THE MOWERENGINE OFF, AS AN EXPLOSIVE GAS ISPRODUCED INSIDE THE BATTERY WHENTHE ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING. DO NOTUSE AN EXPOSED FLAME AND DO NOTSMOKE WHEN CHECKING THE BATTERYELECTROLYTE LEVEL.

To check the battery electrolyte level:

1. Clean the top of the battery, then remove thevent plugs.

2. Add distilled water if the electrolyte level islow. The level is correct when the liquid is6.35 mm (1/4") above the plates.

NOTE: Keep distil led water in anonmetallic container that is clean andwell-covered.

3. Install the vent plug after making sure thevent holes are not blocked. At below freezingtemperatures, run the engine for a period oftime after adding water, allowing the batteryto charge, which prevents the water fromfreezing.

ALTERNATOR

The CM mower 20 amp alternator is belt-driven from the engine crankshaft pulley. It isimportant that belt slippage does not occur, orthe charging system will be affected. To adjustthe belt, see the instructions previously givenunder the "Fan Belt" section.

Other than belt adjustment, the only alternatormaintenance required is to periodically inspectthe terminals to ensure they are clean and tight. The alternator cooling fan should also be cleanedperiodically.

When working on or checking the alternator, adhere to following precautions or alternatordamage may occur:

• Do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCESshort the field terminal of the alternator toground.

• Do not disconnect the alternator output leador battery cables while the alternator isoperating.

• Do not remove the alternator from the tractorwithout first disconnecting the negative (-)bettery cable. When removing the battery, disconnect the negative (-) cable first.

• To install a battery, MAKE SURE that thepositive (+) cable is connected first and thatthe negative terminal is connected to ground.Reverse polarity will destroy the rectifierdiodes in the alternator.

If the battery charge warning light illuminates, indicating that the alternator is not charging thebattery, check the fan belt and the wiringconnections. If these items are in satisfactorycondition and the warning light continues toindicate no charge, consult your Dealer.

VOLTAGE REGULATOR

The voltage regulator, automatically controlsthe alternator charging rate. No attempt shouldbe made to adjust the setting of the regulator.lf the charge indicator warning light indicatesthat the alternator is not charging tha battery, check the fan belt and the wiring connections.lf thses are satisfactory and the warning lightcontinues to indicate no charge, consult yourSHIBAURA Dealer.

TIRES

NOTE: Check tire pressure after every 50hours of operation or weekly.

Tire inflation pressure affects the amount ofweight a tire can carry. Check the air pressure inyour Mower tires. If necessary, adjust the tirepressure, being careful not to overinflate orunderinflate. Observe the following guidelines:

• Do not inflate a tire above the maximumpressure shown on the tire. If the tire is notmarked, do not exceed the maximumpressure shown in the Tire Inflation chartfound in this manual.

• Do not reinflate a tire that has been run flat orseriously underinflated until the tire has beeninspected for damage by a qualified person.

• When checking tire pressure, inspect the tirefor damaged sidewalls and tread cuts.Neglected damage leads to early tire failure.

WARNING: INFLATING OR SERVICINGTIRES CAN BE DANGEROUS. TRAINEDPERSONNEL SHOULD SERVICE AND/ORMOUNT TIRES WHENEVER POSSIBLE.

If you must inflate or service tires, follow thesesafety precautions to avoid injury or fatality.

• Make sure the rim is clean and free of rust.

• Lubricate both tire beads and rim flanges withsoap solution. Do not use oil or grease.

• Use a clip-on tire chuck with a remote hoseand gauge. This allows the operator to standclear of the tire while inflating.

• After seating the beads, adjust inflationpressure to recommended operatingpressure.

• Do not inflate a tire unless the rim is mountedon the Mower or is secured so that will notmove if the tire or rim should suddenly fail.

• Do not weld, braze, otherwise repair, or use adamaged rim.

• Never attempt tire repairs on a public road orhighway.

• Use jack stands or other suitable blocking tosupport the Mower while repairing tires.

• Ensure jack has adequate capacity to lift yourMower.

• Place jack on a firm, level surface.

• Do not place any part of your body beneaththe Mower or start the engine while theMower is on the jack.
