SEATTLE (AP) They’ve crowded into stuffy rallies at a Seattle union hall, protested in front of fast food restau- rants, marched down city streets and implored city leaders to demand an immediate $15 an hour minimum wage hike for all employees. “We’re not patient!” a man shouted at a union hall rally, and the crowd cheered. While the Seattle mayor is proposing to raise the wage to $15 in the coming years to the highest level in the nation, some activ- ists say that’s too slow and are threatening to take the issue to voters with a ballot measure that would force a raise sooner. As the plan is being debated by the coun- cil, businesses are sound- ing the alarm that raising the wage too quickly could hurt their revenue and force them to hire fewer workers or let go of some employees. Popular restaurateurs have emphatically argued for counting tips in total compensation. Minority chambers of commerce have banded together to argue that a quick hike to $15 would kill their family-run business- es. Their argument: Who is going to hire immigrants learning English for $15 an hour? Mayor Ed Murray pre- sented his plan, forged from an agreement among labor, business and non- profit representatives. The group crafted a plan that 21 of the 24 members agreed on. It created a unified front for Murray to present to the city. Murray’s proposal gives businesses with more than 500 employees national- ly at least three years to phase in the increase. Those providing health insurance will have four years to complete the move. Smaller organiza- tions will be given seven years, including a consid- eration for tips and health care costs over the first five years of the phase-in. Central Idaho man faces murder charge HAILEY (AP) — A cen- tral Idaho man police say is responsible for the dis- appearance of another man is facing a second-de- gree murder charge. The Blaine County Sher- iff’s Office says 49-year- old Keith Eric Blankenship of Hailey was taken into custody Wednesday. Police are not releasing details on what led them to Blankenship. Authorities say 47-year- old Steve Michael Roman- chuk of Hailey was report- ed missing from his resi- dence on Jan. 15. He has not been found. Police say his wallet remained in the home, and he didn’t take any extra clothing or camping gear with him. Man charged with keeping sex slave TWIN FALLS (AP) — A south-central Idaho man police say forcibly kept a woman as a sex slave for 18 months has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and rape. Oscar Ayala-Arizmendi, 36, also is charged in 5th District Court with posses- sion of a controlled sub- stance, The Times-News reported. Bail was set at $1 million Wednesday. Authorities say the 27-year-old woman escaped from the house in Buhl on April 8, and made a report on April 26. Aya- la-Arizmendi was taken into custody Tuesday. The woman told police that Ayala-Arizmendi forced her to smoke meth once or twice a week, sometimes held a gun to her head, and often put a rope around her neck and led her around the house “like a dog.” Dad, son survive plane crash HAYDEN (AP) — A father and son survived a small plane crash in north- ern Idaho after the craft’s engine quit working near the Coeur d’Alene Airport. Officials tell the Coeur d’Alene Press that 73-year- old Terry L. Holman of Spokane, Washington, and his 28-year-old son, Brian Holman, suffered only minor cuts and scrapes in the crash on Wednesday. Kootenai County Sher- iff’s Lt. Stu Miller says Terry Holman was bank- ing to land at the airport when the engine cut out. He says the plane clipped the exhaust pipe of a road grader in a field before hitting the ground. Miller says Terry Hol- man told him he’d been flying since 1960 and this was his first crash. SEATTLE (AP) — They’ve crowded into stuffy rallies at a Seattle union hall, protested in front of fast food restau-rants, marched down city streets and implored city leaders to demand an immediate $15 an hour minimum wage hike for all employees.

“We’re not patient!” a man shouted at a union hall rally, and the crowd cheered.

While the Seattle mayor is proposing to raise the wage to $15 in the coming

years to the highest level in the nation, some activ-ists say that’s too slow and are threatening to take the issue to voters with a ballot measure that would force a raise sooner.

As the plan is being debated by the coun-cil, businesses are sound-ing the alarm that raising the wage too quickly could hurt their revenue and force them to hire fewer workers or let go of some employees.
