Spring has arrived; the days are getting longer and the air a little warmer. Soon the hot days of summer will be here with the sounds of kids splashing in the pool and the smell of food cooking on the grill. With the long off-season and harsh end of summer and fall storms, some of the landscaping at OHC has changed but the Club’s charms still remain. I want to take a moment and update you all on the changes that will greet you this upcoming season... The great white oak is not going to be removed this season; instead we are going to carve it into a Totem Pole with the OHC logo on it. This way it can remain a focal point of OHC. We have replaced the old playscape with a new one that will offer a variety of creative playtime opportunities for our children. Also, before opening day, a new pool slide and updates to the tennis court fencing will be added. I would like to send a special thank you to our pool director search commit- tee – Jean Miller, Diane Crean and Holly Kenny. They spent a lot of time from November to January, interviewing and screening potential candidates for the job. I am happy to say, with their recommendation and the board’s approval, we have hired Tim Sanderson as our clubs’ new Pool Director. Welcome Tim! I also want to thank all the Board members for their hard work during the off-season by coming together on a budget for the 2012 season. With the challenges the club faced, it was great to see us work together and get it done! This summer we are hosting Time Trials at OHC, a very large swim team event and I am thrilled they are being held at our Club. What a great plat- form for us to showcase our Club, our great members, and all OHC has to offer! Thank you to everyone who will be volunteering and helping to make this and all events a success over the course of this summer. I hope to see you all at the club this season…….when the only cold we feel is from the beverage in our hand! OHC News and Club Director’s Report

Greetings to Orchard Hill Club! I am excited and honored to serve as the next OHC Director. In antici-pation of Opening Day, I am busy working with the officers and staff to make sure OHC families have a welcoming and relaxing place to spend the summer. As the coaches and lifeguards gather to plan for the up-coming season, our mission will remain the same: ensure the health and welfare of OHC members and their families by keeping the pool and club facilities clean and safe.

To guarantee another sensational summer, an additional assistant swim coach will work with the younger teams for added safety, and lifeguards will be prepared to actively respond to your needs and suggestions. Most of the guards will return this year, including the venerable Bobby LaPerla who will head the staff. Please do not hesitate to call on us.

As a new member of the OHC community, I am quickly learning it’s really a collective effort that makes OHC a special place. I want to publicly thank Jason LaMay for magnanimously answering my almost daily inquiries during the last few months. Jason is a tough act to follow, but his detailed responses are making for a smooth transition. Additionally, I have to acknowledge Jean Miller’s graceful guidance, and the steady support Chris Garland and Chris Gallagher have offered. Finally, the swim team crew—Leslie Maye, Jen Barton, Christine Nuzzolo, and Coach Scott Pe-ters—have generously provided their assistance and expertise. Truly wonderful people to work with!

Finding helpful people at every turn makes me eager to meet the membership and welcome new families to OHC. A beautiful summer will be here soon! Best Regards, Tim Sanderson, Orchard Hill Club Director [email protected]

POOL UPDATE

We are taking precautions to avoid a repeat of last season's poor water conditions. This year we will test the stream water prior to filling the pool so we can formulate the proper chemical mixture to treat the water. Thereafter, we will test the stream water

monthly throughout the season because it’s used to top off the pool during the sea-son. Additionally, we put a new valve on the filtration system that will allow us to rinse the filters after vacuuming the pool floor. The rinse option will clear the filters and

stop sediment from getting blown back into the pool when the filters are turned on. In late March, a large crack was repaired in the pools deep-end and an interior expansion joint was re-caulked.

Lastly, the pool will receive a fresh coat of paint in May after it is power washed. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns or comments.

Swim Chairs Update

Throughout the off-season, we have been meeting and planning for this year's swim season and it looks like it will be more exciting than usual! We are so happy to welcome our 2 new swim coaches, Olivia Rettstat and Andrew Crean, and our 3 returning coaches, Scott Peters, Emily Rettstat and Ali Curran. We are also getting geared up to meet the challenge of hosting time trials at our club this summer.

The dates for swim team sign ups has been set and coordinated with swim lesson and tennis sign ups. The dates are May 30 and May 31 from 4-6pm. Sartorious Sports will be there on the 31st to take orders for swimsuits. They will have sample suits there for your swimmers to try on.

At this time we ask that you come with your checkbook ready as each sign up needs a separate check writ-ten. The cost for swim team is $10 per child with a $20 family maximum.

We will also be creating the volunteer schedule so please have a calendar handy so you can commit to work 3 time slots during our regular season and an additional time at time trials or championships.

We are looking forward to another great swim season at Orchard Hill!

Tennis News ! Hello OHC members. I hope everyone enjoyed our mild 2011-12 winter. We must have been making up for the previous winters' accumulation with the lack of snow this winter. And with this spring coming early, it feels like summer is right around the corner. If you are like me, when I think summer, I think...tennis time! Well, maybe tennis isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of summer, but I hope it is one of the things you think about. So here are some tennis related news as we gear up for this summer season. First off, we are currently in the process of hiring a 2nd assistant pro for the tennis program. Unfortunately, Bobby Schneider will not be returning this summer. Bobby did a great job for us last summer and we wish him luck in his current pursuits. Don't fret, though, because we do have Orchard Hill's own Garrett Lynn coming back for his second year with the program, ensuring that we will have lesson and team continuity with our 1st assistant returning. I will keep you all posted with our search for the 2nd assistant. Whoever it is, I'm sure he/she will be a great addition to the Orchard Hill staff. Signups for lessons and the tennis teams are rapidly approaching. May 30th and 31st will be the signup dates. So mark your calendars for that! One change of note for the lessons is that we are adjusting the age grouping slightly. This summer, there will be 3 rather than 4 age groups. (It made more sense seeing that we had 3 lesson times to have 3 age groupings to match.) We will have 4-7 year olds, 7-11 year olds, and 11 years old and up as age groups. You'll notice the overlap with 7 year olds and 11 year olds. The rule of thumb for parents to use in signing up your child/children is: if your child has been involved in lessons previously at OHC or elsewhere, he/she should consider signing up

in the higher age grouping. if your child has not taken lessons before or only been involved in lessons limitedly, he/she should consider

signing up for the lower age grouping. With that said, we know that there are other factors that go into signing up a child for lessons, so we will be very flexible so as to accommodate the needs of the members. I look forward to seeing everyone again this summer and reconnecting with you. Ben Scurto, Head Tennis Pro

Hello OHC Members, With summer not too far off, I hope everyone is excited to get back on the tennis courts. Allan Shiller is currently hard at work on the maintenance of the courts so they will be ready for opening day on May 26th. I am happy to report that Ben Scurto will be returning for his third year as Head Tennis Pro. Ben has done a great job these last two years and our tennis program has really grown with him at the helm. I am thrilled with his implementation of the USTA Quick-Start program for kids 10 and under, which scales down tennis to provide more successes for our younger players. I am looking forward to working with him another year to provide our club with a strong tennis program. Garrett Lynn is also coming back and will be promoted to First Assistant Tennis Pro. Garrett has been a great role model for our kids and did a wonderful job working with them during lessons and tennis team. Sadly, we have to say goodbye to Bobby Schneider. Bobby did a great job last year and will be missed! We are currently in the middle of interviews with several strong can-didates and will announce the new Second Assistant Tennis Pro in the May newsletter. Registration for tennis lessons and tennis team will be on Wednesday, May 30th and Thursday, May 31st from 4:00-6:00pm. More details will be provided in the May newsletter. Looking forward to a great summer this year! Julie Fuller - Tennis Chair
