At this young age of music development we focus on the interaction between child and carer. Musical concepts are introduced through play and exploring different sound sources to lay solid foundations in the brain for the development of speech and language. But above all music play makes babies feel happy and connected to the world!

With their motor skills now developed, children continue to experiment with new instruments while musical concepts are consciously assimilated. Music is now introduced in such a way as to support Phase One of the Letter and Sounds national teaching programme, while enhancing and promoting all other areas of learning as described in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our future musicians are now independent and confident enough to be little maestros…at least for 45 minutes! Children will be able to copy and recognise rhythms, improvise their own musical patterns and create their first compositions.

In this ukulele class, the children will learn basic techniques on this little instrument in a playful and fun way. Together as a group we will explore all the sounds a ukulele can make, as well as strumming open string pieces and plucking with simple chords. Who knows? We maybe even feel confident enough to write our own little pieces of music. And the best of all: the ukulele will always sound good! This class is therefore perfect for the first encounter with a string instrument and sends the little musicians-to-be on their way to the world of playing an instrument. TUTOR: alexandRa ReiSingeR

Children learn in small groups, spending half a term on each of the following: violin, trombone, guitar, piano, flute and percussion. Classes include a mixture of songs, musical games, instrumental technique and creative projects. Over the course of the year the children develop their skills in rhythm, pitch, notation, performance and composition, as well as learning the basic technique for playing each instrument. Each half term includes a ‘Show & Share’ class, where all the children come together to perform on their instruments, and an opportunity for friends and family to visit their lesson and hear them play. At the end of the year there is a ‘Celebration’ Concert. From this September, we’ll be concentrating more than ever on chamber and ensemble work – taking the first steps toward a future Roundabout Orchestra! This is an essential class for any junior musician – those who are already beginning learning an instrument or for those who are thinking of taking up one but who do not feel ready just yet! Based on sound pedagogy and the KS1 national curriculum, the course explores core skills in rhythm, pitch and musical expression through songs, games, stories and creative projects. This class is a perfect follow-on from our Little Maestros early years classes, and also complements individual tuition, Junior Choir or Roundabout. It would also be an excellent preparation for joining Tuesday Music School. TUTORS: hOllie macdOnald, anna TeR haaR and jO baRwick

Music for Children and Teenagers (5-18yrs)

Our vibrant range of individual lessons and group courses allows each child to experiment, find and develop their interest and skills in music. To get the full musical experience we recommend that children take one class from each group: Learn to play or sing, Play or sing together and Learn about and Create music. LEARN TO PLAY OR SINGWe have a wide range of group tuition classes for our youngest learners. Our high quality group lessons allow children to develop instrumental and musicianship skills in a fun and motivating environment; learning music also improves concentration, memory, imagination and the development of fine motor skills. The supportive environment of our small group lessons allows children to develop their own self-confidence as well as their listening skills, and our group children show pride and appreciation of their own and their classmates’ skills and achievements. As children develop independence and are able to control voice and instruments technically, they can move onto individual tuition or shared tuition, offering the most focussed, personalised experience.

Individual Tuition (5+ yrs)Enrol at any time of the year to begin learning individually or in a shared lesson. Learning at The Conservatoire provides so much more than just a music lesson – see page 3 to find out more.
