Shoulder Bikeways o Hig hway shoulde rs with a paved width of four fe e t or m ore are g e ne rally conside red suita b le for b icycling . The s e are usually found on roads with re la tive ly hig h traffic volum e s and spe eds.
Shared Roadso In m any are a s, b icyclis ts do not have dedicated trave l lane s. In the s e situations, b icyclis ts and m otoris ts share the road. This is com m on on local stre e ts and m any rural roads.
The Law Laws g ove rning b icycle use can b e found in the Ore g on Vehicle Code and in the Alb any Municipal Code. Unde r Ore g on law, ORS 814.400 (1)(1), all bicycle s ridde n on pub lic stre e ts are sub ject to the sam e rule s and re g ula tions as m otor vehicle s, exce pt thos e provisions which by the ir ve ry nature can have no application. Listed b e low are the laws that m os t fre que ntly affect b icyclis ts and b icycling sa fe ty:
Always ride with and in the same direction as the flow of traffic. o Riding the wrong direction is a le ading cause of b icycle accide nts. It place s the b icyclis t in a location at inte rs ections that m ay b e ove rlooked by m otoris ts watching for the norm al flow of traffic and e ndang e rs othe r ride rs. Riding ag ains t traffic is ille g al.
Obey all traffic signs and signals.
Bicyclists must use the following hand signals. o For a le ft turn, le ft arm exte nded; for a rig ht turn, rig ht arm exte nded or le ft arm cre a ting a 90-de g re e ang le with the hand exte nded upwards.
Position yourself correctly at intersections. o If you are turning le ft, sig nal appropria te ly, watch for vehicle s and m e rg e care fully to the ce nte r of the turn lane. Make your turn occupying the sam e space a vehicle would.
o If you are not turning , follow the trave l lane and watch for vehicle s that m ay b e cros sing your path.
o Bicycle s m ay pas s othe r vehicle s on the rig ht whe n pas s a g e can b e m ade safe ly.
Yield to pedestrians. o On sidewalks whe re b icycle riding is allowed, you m ust yie ld the rig ht-of-way to pede s trians and g ive an audib le warning b e fore ove rtaking and pas sing .
o You m ust slow down whe n approaching or e nte ring a cros s-walk or a driveway or cros sing a curb cut or pede s trian ram p whe n a m otor vehicle is approaching the cros swalk or driveway.
Ride as close as is safe and practical to the right curb, edge of the roadway or parked vehicles on streets without bike lanes.
Walk your bike on downtown sidewalks. o Alb any prohib its riding on sidewalks in busine s s districts.
o Othe r citie s m ay have m ore re s trictive laws.
Do not carry pas sengers on a bike unless it is designed for more than one rider.
Ride Defensively Be predictable. o Motoris ts ne ed to know what you are planning to do, eve n in a b ike lane. Sig nal we ll in advance if you inte nd to turn or m e rg e into anothe r lane.
Avoid riding in driver blind spots .o Be sure the drive r has se e n you b e fore m aking a m aneuve r that puts you in conflict with a m otor vehicle. Watch for vehicle s turning sudde nly at driveways and inte rs ections.
Beware of parked vehicle doors which may open unexpectedly, loose gravel, and rough pavement.
When the road is wet, braking is slowed; and the road can be slippery.
When cros sing angled railroad tracks ride slowly and turn as close to a right angle as pos sible to avoid having your wheels “catch” in the tracks.
Be aware of pedestrians and skaters that may pop out from between parked vehicles.
At intersections, be prepared for vehicles turning acros s your path. o If in doub t, m e rg e into the m otor vehicle lane to trave l throug h the inte rs ection.
Ride in the middle of the lane in slow traffic.
Equipment Wear a helmet.
o An ANSI approved b icycle he lm e t can protect you from he ad injurie s and is re quired by law to b e worn by cyclists unde r the ag e of 16.
Use a pack or a rack. o Do not carry article s that preve nt you from ke e ping b oth hands on the handle b ars and having full control of your b icycle.
Be visible! o We aring b rig ht and re flective clothing is recom m e nded.
o Riding a b ike at nig ht re quire s caution b ecause it is difficult for a m otoris t to se e you. P edals with re flectors, re flector tape, le g lig hts, and spoke re flectors also he lp to incre as e a ride r’s visib ility. You m ust also display a white lig ht visib le 500 fe e t to the front and a re flector visib le 600 fe e t to the re ar. A red re ar lig ht is also recom m e nded.
Use a bell. o A b e ll will he lp to warn pe ople of your pre s e nce. Sire ns or whistle s are prohib ited b ecause they m ay b e confused with e m e rg e ncy vehicle s.
Carry a lock. o Lock your b ike to a pe rm ane nt ob ject. Secure the fram e and both whe e ls if pos sib le.

Thom as and Walte rMontie th arrived in the are a thre e ye ars la te r withplans to e s ta b lish a town. With wate r powe r andrive r transporta tion in m ind, the Monte ith’spurchas e d Sm e e d’s land claim and had a portionne ar the rive r surveyed for the town site . By 1866,the town was e s ta b lished as a Willam e tte Rive rshipping ce nte r. The city continued to g row as acom m e rcial ce nte r in the valle y whe n the railroadre ached Alb any in 1871. By 1886, Alb any hadsidewalks de scrib e d a s in “g ood re pair” but pavedstre e ts did not arrive until 1918.
