October 15, 2018 Shari R. Speer, PhD Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Jennifer Schlueter, PhD Faculty Fellow, Curriculum Graduate School 250 University Hall 230 North Oval Mall Columbus, OH 43210-1336 Dear Dr. Speer and Dr. Schlueter: Attached is a proposal submitted on behalf of the College of Nursing to revise six of the clinical specialization tracks of the M.S. in Nursing program. The proposed changes respond to expected national certification body requirements for increased numbers of clinical credit hours that will support program graduates to meet near-future certification requirements for advanced nursing clinical practice. In addition, there are some minor adjustments to the sequencing of coursework and elective coursework for these specialization tracks, to more optimally support student learning needs and clinical site placement needs. The program revision will formally impact required courses taken by students starting Spring 2019 and forward, and revisions for required clinical coursework that will commence primarily in Summer 2020 will apply for newly-matriculating students. Currently-enrolled students will be able to finish out coursework in the current curriculum, but all student curriculum plans will meet national certification body requirements for required numbers of clinical practicum hours for eligibility for certification for advanced nursing clinical practice. Less than 50% of the total minimum program credit hours are impacted by the proposed changes. In September/October 2018, the proposed revisions were reviewed and approved by the College of Nursing Graduate Studies Committee, the eligible College of Nursing voting faculty, and the College of Nursing administration (support letter attached). Thank you for your review of this proposal, and please let me know if you need any additional information regarding this request. Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Speer and Dr. Schlueter:

The College of Nursing supports the attached proposal to revise six of the clinical specialization tracks

of the M.S. in Nursing program.

Proposal to Revise Clinical Specialization Tracks in the M.S. in Nursing Program College of Nursing

October 2018 Introduction This proposal requests revisions of six of the 13 clinical specialization tracks of the M.S. in Nursing program. The proposed program revisions respond to near-future national certification body requirements for increased numbers of clinical credit hours, which will support program graduates to meet contemporary certification requirements for advanced nursing clinical practice. In addition, there are some minor adjustments proposed for some coursework sequencing and elective coursework that will more optimally support student learning needs, by rebalancing the increased numbers of clinical hours across additional semesters, as well as supporting clinical site placement needs in context of the increased clinical hours. In recent years, masters level nursing programs have been significantly increasing the required number of clinical hours (e.g., increasing from a minimum of 500+ to 600 clinical hours) in response to national certification body requirements for increased numbers of clinical credit hours. The national trend for increasing the minimum number of clinical hours supports the provision of expanded content and additional precepted skills practice for program graduates to meet new certification requirements for advanced nursing clinical practice. The timing of this requested curriculum change is to assure that all program graduates have the increased required minimum numbers of clinical hours for their specialization tracks at the time they complete their programs of study at OSU (typically 2021 and forward for the proposed curriculum changes), as consistent with eligibility criteria for taking national certification examinations for credentialing for advanced clinical nursing practice. Summary of Proposed Changes by Specialization Track Table 1 summarizes the proposed curriculum changes for the six clinical specialization tracks. Five of the six specialization tracks are proposed to increase the total number of clinical course credit hours and/or to redistribute the clinical credits over an additional semester via the inclusion of a third new clinical practicum course. The proposed changes in total clinical credits are modest in relation to total required program credits, ranging from an additional 1 to 4 credits per specialization track as shown in Table 1. In addition, the course sequencing for the Nursing 7303 (Advanced Pharmacology) course for the Neonatal specialization track will move Nursing 7303 from Spring to Summer semester, and the existing free-selection elective course for the Pediatric Primary Care specialization track will change to a course in Assessment and Management of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Issues (Nursing 7331), as consistent with contemporary national standards for pediatric advanced practice nursing preparation. No changes are proposed for the core or other required courses in the curriculum of the M.S. in Nursing program.

Curriculum Transition Plan Table 2 below summarizes the implementation timetable for course offerings (current, revised, and new courses) by specialization track and semester/year. The program revision proposal for the six specialization tracks will formally impact required clinical courses taken by students starting Spring 2019 and forward, and revisions for required clinical coursework will apply for newly-matriculating students. Currently-enrolled students will finish out coursework in the current (non-revised) curriculum. Thus, the current and revised versions of the clinical practicum courses will not be offered concurrently (= non-overlapping curriculum revisions), as shown in Table 2 below. Table 2.
