NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
THE CHURCH GATHERS ...
Welcome to Westminster Church! We are a family of Christians gathered from many
traditions and neighborhoods, worshiping here with the goal of connecting faith and life. If
you are a visitor, we pray you will feel welcome and blessed by our worship. We invite you to
consider making Westminster your church home. Please let us have your contact information
so we may be in touch.
Children are welcome in worship here. A nursery is available during the entire service.
When the prelude begins let us quietly prepare for the worship of almighty God.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CONCERNS OF THE CONGREGATION
CALL TO WORSHIP Micah 6:6-8
Leader: With what shall I come before the Lord and bow myself before God on
high?
People: He has shown you, O mortal, what is good;
Leader: And what does the Lord require of you?
People: To do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your
God.
TO PRAISE AND CONFESS ...
*HYMN NO. 267 (blue hymnal) All Things Bright and Beautiful Royal Oak
*LITANY OF CONFESSION from Book of Common Worship, 1993
Almighty God, you alone are good and holy. Purify our lives and make us brave
disciples. We do not ask you to keep us safe, but to keep us loyal, so we may
serve Jesus Christ, who, tempted in every way as we are, was faithful to you.
Amen.
From lack of reverence for truth and beauty, from a calculating or sentimental
mind, from going along with mean or ugly things,
O God, deliver us.
From cowardice that dares not face truth, laziness content with half-truth, or
arrogance that thinks we know it all,
O God, deliver us.
From artificial life and worship, from all that is hollow or insincere,
O God, deliver us.
From trite ideals and cheap pleasures, from mistaking hard vulgarity for humor,
O God, deliver us.
From being dull, pompous or rude, from putting down our neighbors,
O God, deliver us.
From cynicism about others, from intolerance or cruel indifference,
O God, deliver us.
From being satisfied with things as they are, in the church or in the world, from
failing to share your indignation about injustice,
O God, deliver us.
From selfishness, self-indulgence or self-pity,
O God, deliver us.
From token concern for the poor, lonely or loveless people, from confusing faith
with good feeling, or love with wanting to be loved,
O God, deliver us.
From everything in us that may hide your light,
O God, light of life, forgive us.
*KYRIE ELEISON NO. 574 (blue hymnal) arr. David N. Johnson
Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy
upon us.

Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Unison) Colossians 1:15-20
Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in
him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers – all things have
been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in
him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first
place in everything. For in him the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and
through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on
earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

ANTONIO CALDARA (c. 1670-1736) was born in Venice, the son of a violinist.
While a chorister at St. Mark’s Cathedral there, it is believed he was a student of
Giovanni Legrenzi. He went on serve courts in Mantua, Barcelona, Rome, and finally
Vienna, where he remained until his death. Though not a familiar name these days,
he was highly regarded in his time and afterwards, and his music was studied and
admired by composers including J. S. Bach, Telemann, Franz Joseph Haydn, W. A.
Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. This morning’s anthem is light and buoyant,
energetic, and overtly Italianate in style.
GEARING UP FOR HABITAT: This is a year when Westminster Church builds a
house for a worthy family in Knoxville as part of the Habitat for Humanity program.
I want to let the congregation know that volunteer recruitment will begin in the next
few weeks to fill out the various construction days, beginning with Blitz Day on
September 17th. If you can use a hammer, or paint with a brush, you are qualified to
do the work. If you know what a hard hat is, you are good to go. We will also need
folks to provide lunch on a couple of the work days and have water available for
thirsty workers. Be on the lookout for more information about this year’s house build
and sign-up sheets that will be posted in the Schilling Gallery. If you have any
questions about this year’s project, please contact me (Buz Johnson) by e-mail, at
