Dear Students:
On behalf of the Alabama Department of Public Health I would like to commend all of
the students who participated in the 2001 “Buckle-Up, Alabama!” Poster Contest, and to
congratulate those students who received awards for their outstanding entries. In addition,
I would like to take this opportunity to remind elementary school children about the
importance of wearing their seat belts at all times when traveling in motor vehicles. During
2000, 986 people were killed and an additional 43,499 were injured in Alabama as the
result of motor vehicle collisions. In Alabama alone, this is the equivalent of losing
approximately three lives each and every day. The real tragedy is that many of these
deaths and injuries could have been prevented, had the drivers and passengers of motor
vehicles taken the time to buckle their seat belts.
Safety belt usage has been shown to be the single most effective measure in preventing
serious and fatal injuries in motor vehicle collisions and reducing the severity of injuries.
As the National Highway Traffic Administration reminds us, children under 12 years
of age are safest in the back seat. I hope through programs such as this poster contest, we
can educate and convince people to fasten their seat belts and make it a lifetime habit. If
you do not already do so, I urge you to begin this habit and to ask your friends and family
members to buckle up as well.
Sincerely,
Donald Williamson, M.D.State Health OfficerZachary Buch
