To Love Again Ministries Pick of the month

This month we are highlighting a website called

Organized Home Clean House, Cut Clutter, Get

Organized at Home!

This is a helpful website with lots of tips and lists for home organization and preparedness. I like that all of their articles are

printable and most have check off list formatting in at least part of the article. The down side I saw was lots of ads. If you can overlook

the ads you will probably find some good tips for your home.

we often find ourselves with high emotions, yet what we do long term is how we find God in all things. Even in the hard times, especially the hard times, His perfect will does not always, in fact rarely, parallel what we consider as perfect. I strive to look at life as a wide-eyed child that is amazed and filled with wonder about life, who delights in every small joy, who wakes to greet every day as brand new. My life lessons are these:

Through loss I try to have a loose grip

on what is not mine but my Father’s in Heaven. Through hardship I learn empathy for others and what they carry each day. Through trials I learn patience which brings me to forgiveness. Through the tears that I have surrendered I try to see them as seeds that can grow into something beautiful. All of these things make me stronger because of Christ’s love for me.

I am sharing a poem which I wrote in

the early 70s in hope that it will give you a glimpse of me.

The Birth of a New Year Mary Corey

As children with great anticipation,

hopes, and dreams we enter into the dawn of another new year. All of the great times in the past year lay indelibly printed on our hearts, like a scrap book of our life. We leave all the disappointments, loss, hardship and tears to be shadows amongst the trees.

I have always seen life in a simple way by

relating it to nature. This helps me to accept life as it comes and to go on in a calm manner, knowing life is ever changing like the seasons. God has everything to do with a calm spirit. Yes,

To everything there is a season, a time for

every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to gain, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to throw away; A time to tear, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Dancing in the Rain Kimberly Borst

I remember a warm summer

evening when I was about 15 and it began to rain. The droplets were surprisingly warm, especially for Colorado. My girl friends and I couldn’t help ourselves we danced, played and laughed in the rain until we were soaked.

Most rain storms are not so

inviting, they are cold, dark and sometimes even ominous with thunder and lightning. It’s easy to go out in good weather and good times and engage in life. It’s easy to praise God when things are going well. But there is this profound thing that happens when we can dance in the rain of heart ache, tribulation and sorrow. When we chose to praise God and delight in Him and lay down the circumstances that entangle us, we engage in the supernatural.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give

thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

Page 7: To Love Again Ministries, Inspire January 2013 #15

When we venture to press in and

truly worship God - no matter what, it becomes a sacrifice of praise, an aroma that wafts up before the throne.

For the Lord your God is living

among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” ZEPHANIAH 3:17 (NLT)

When I worship I dance with the

Lord. In His presence He comforts me and speaks to my heart and I am renewed. He responds to our praise. He loves us and wants us. Jesus is enough. He will carry all our burdens and fulfill our desires.

Delight yourself in the LORD and he

will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (ASV)

This season’s hair trends have marked some of my very favorite styles to date. Lately, models and celebrities have been trading in gobs of makeup and heavy highlights for loose curls, natural coloring, and organic glowing makeup. Needless to say, I would much rather take little to no time on myself and still be fashion forward! SO here is a quick tutorial to help you keep up with the trends without spending

unnecessary time on your hair.

2. I divide my hair into two mess pony tails then pin them away so they don’t get in the way. I then take a section of hair out on one side to curl. When taking sections, you want them no wider than the diameter of the curling iron. Meaning you don’t want to take so big of a section that the curling iron can’t heat it up in a timely manner. For this look you don’t want too small of a section either. This will cause a tighter curled look.

1. This is my hair which I slept on the night before. I sleep on my hair a lot because I’m normally too lazy to blow dry it all. I just put a heat protectant product on before I got in bed.

Page 9: To Love Again Ministries, Inspire January 2013 #15

3. The best way to get a strong curl that lasts all day is to clamp the barrel down at the base of your hair then slowly feed the hair through the barrel. In order to achieve this look, it is best to curl all hair away from your face. Work this technique through all sections on both sides.

5. Let curls cool, then comb through them with either a wide tooth comb or your fingers! There you have it - voluminous loose curls that will last you all day!

4. When you get to that last layer of your hair make sure that you are curling that away from your face at a pretty severe angle. This will create that loose swoop curl you see in movies and magazines.

Tip: If your hair doesn’t hold curl well, try hair spraying each section with a light holding hairspray before curling. This will ensure that the curl holds until cooling down.

The way that you dress not only says

something about you, but it influences the feelings and the integrity of the men around you. Clothing that is too tight, too short, or too low cut is a distraction and can make people feel uncomfortable. It is also a statement about how secure you are in yourself. Do you dress modestly so as to show yourself secure in who you are, or are you seeking attention from men in order to derive a brief boost in your self- esteem? We should dress in such a way that encourages the character of men to protect and honor women.

Not only does your modesty affect

the men around you, but it also greatly influences the younger generation that looks to you as a role model. Young boys and girls, teenagers, younger brothers and sisters, etc. observe the way you present yourself through your dress. It sets a standard for modesty in their young, formative minds.

I began a new job this fall as a

Kindergarten teacher aide in a nearby elementary school. I have been especially cognizant of dressing modestly. I dress in a stylish manner, but I always layer my blouses with t-shirts or high-rise tank tops (I will often wear my tank tops on

Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary of the

English Language says this about modesty: “Unaffected modesty is the sweetest charm of female excellence, the richest gem in the diadem of their honor.”

Modesty, in the way that we dress, is a

non-verbal statement of our “excellence” and character. Believe it or not, we can be “charming” through our modesty. We can dress in a cute, stylish manner without compromising our honor, or the honor of those around us.

“When women dress modestly men

want to protect them, when women dress provocatively, men want to conquer them.” Lisa Bevere

Page 11: To Love Again Ministries, Inspire January 2013 #15

According to Noah Webster, modesty

could be the richest gem in your diadem of honor. A “diadem” is a jeweled crown. Now, that is the way to be noticed! Are you willing to be an honorable example in this area of your life? It is a daily choice that you will make as you look through your closet each morning and think, “So, what am I going to wear today??”

backwards since the back side comes up higher than the front) so that in no way do I even come close to showing cleavage. Because I often bend down to assist students sitting in their desks, I will bend down in front of the mirror as I dress in the mornings, just to make sure that my undershirt does not hang too low or come away from my chest. Through the way I dress, I want to be a role model of modesty to these young girls that look up to me and take notice of everything I do. I also want to protect the innocence of the young boys in my classroom and earn the trust of their parents. I want the mothers of these young boys to feel at peace when they leave their sons in my care, knowing I will never compromise the standards set in their home, or be a distraction to their learning, through the way that I dress.

We dress to protect the integrity of men,

to be a role model to the younger generation, but most importantly…to please our Father in heaven. 1 Timothy 2:9 says, “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety…with good deeds appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” It is important to honor God in the way that we dress. We should not dress in such a way that are seeking attention for how we look on the outside, but in such a way that we are giving honor to God for His beautiful reflection on the inside.

shampoo that specializes in moisturizing. If you’re still struggling with moisture try using a leave-in conditioner after you get out of the shower! Why is my scalp so greasy! This question is on the opposite end of the spectrum, and unfortunately I have a lot of insight in this situation because after a day of not showering my scalp can look like a broken oil rig. A big factor is going to be the shampoo and conditioner you use. As much as I love the way vitamin fortified shampoo makes my hair feel. After a few short hours I look like someone cracked an egg over my head! I have found that using a nice clarifying shampoo such as Redkin for volume, or Big Sexy Hair for volume has been a must have. Any shampoo that claims to help with volume is not going to be a heavy shampoo. If you have greasy hair make sure you aren’t using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner on a daily basis. Moisturizing shampoos are very heavy, and they contain a decent amount of essential oils (which you should be avoiding). My best kept secret to a grease-free scalp is using a good conditioner only on my ends. I only condition my hair from the bottom of my ear lobes down so that

Being an ex-hairdresser I get asked a lot

of questions that I would consider common problems in the hair world. I decided to take a quick break from my more serious articles and write something that is a little more beauty related! Below, I have answered ten of the most common hair problems most people face and how we can easily overcome them! Why do I have so much dandruff? In the winter months dandruff is most common because of how dry it can get. Some people are more prone to dandruff than others. The number one cause of dandruff is using a shampoo that doesn’t have enough moisturizing agents. I know how expensive salon shampoo is. I used to sell it all the time and think to myself “I would never pay that much for shampoo!” The cool thing about salons like Master Cuts, Cost Cutters, Toni and Guy, and Beauty brands is that they have a bi-annual shampoo liter sale. Which basically means all the very large containers of expensive salon quality shampoo and conditioners go on sale for as little as $16 for both the shampoo and conditioner, and unless you have Rapunzels hair, it will more than likely last you until the next shampoo sale. This is how I afford expensive shampoo. For dry scalp, make sure you find a

Page 13: To Love Again Ministries, Inspire January 2013 #15

my ends are still getting the moisture and nutrition they needs but my scalp is not getting additional oils. Showering every other day helps neutralize some the natural oils in your scalp! If you get overly greasy bangs you can put a little bit of baby powder in them and rub it in until it absorbs some of the grease, or you can buy a dry shampoo. Garnier has one that actually works pretty well. My favorite dry shampoo is called Dirty Secret by TIGI. (I stock up on it in November when it goes on sale at beauty brands and Ulta). Why do my ends always look so damaged even after I get some cut off? A good hairdresser knows how much of your ends need to be cut off so that your length doesn’t look raggedy. Having ends that don’t look fried is a commitment. If you want to wait longer between haircuts, and have ends that look celebrity-worthy, you have to put the work in. The one thing I hated hearing from my clients was “My ends always look so bad even after I get them cut! I know I straighten my hair a lot, but I have to!” It doesn’t matter if you straighten, curl, and blow dry your hair everyday twice a day you can still have ends that don’t split, but you have to listen to your hairdresser when they tell you that you have to use a heat protectant before applying any heat! This puts a barrier between your hair and the heat you apply so that the product takes the brunt of the damage rather than your ends. My favorite heat care products are Rock My World by

TIGI, After Party by TIGI, Silky Smooth Serum by Aquage, and Straightening Gel by Aquage. If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a product junky. Unfortunately, we all can’t be product junkies like me. So let me break it down so you can find the best heat protectant for your hair. If you’re only blow drying or round brushing your hair I would just recommend a good blow dry lotion that you can put through your ends. There’s an assume CHI blow-dry lotion that is seriously amazing, and the Tresseme one is good, but only for very light heat. If you use heavy heat like straightening and curling I would recommend something like Rock My world or After Party. Both work in all different kinds of hair, and the cool thing about them is you can put them in both dry hair and damp hair which is a life saver if you get static-hair like me! You always want to make sure to work the product evenly through your hair, and with a heat protectant you will want to concentrate the products mostly on the ends. Random tip: If you are thinking of venturing out into the product world, make sure you are shopping somewhere that allows you to return a product if you find you don’t like it or it doesn’t work with your hair. It is the worst when you buy a product, use it once or twice, and then discover

Page 14: To Love Again Ministries, Inspire January 2013 #15

shortage of either stop you. Just look at what you have and get started. The point is to set a time to start and stick with it.

You will begin noticing a spark in your

attitude and a spring in your step. You may find yourself smiling and laughing more often. The heart is connected to the hope factor. Let yourself enjoy a lift.

Taking small steps and being

consistent are great ways to make steady progress. “But,” you say, “Who cares?” God cares, and hopefully, you will eventually care. The apostle Paul wrote that we have been created to bring praise to God. (Ephesians 3:12) He created you. He loves to see you living a happy, healthy life full of good times. A happy heart does good like a medicine. (Proverbs 17:22)

Ok, so you don’t think you have

anything to work with. Picture this. You have no money. You cannot see any extra time in your schedule to pamper yourself. You have no one who seems to care if you change or not. But, you do have yourself and you do have an imagination.

Tone Up

Beverly Huffman

With the beginning of the New Year

you have a great opportunity to tone up your life. Simplify by becoming more solid in the inner image you have of the person you would like to be. There is no limit to who you can become.

Some people like to clip photos out of

magazines to work toward a new look. You can pick and choose from several shots to design that just-right-you. You may want to start with a new nail color, a fresh make-up technique, or lotion.

A few stretching exercises can give

you energy and hope to change. Dropping one dessert from your weekly intake can be a healthy step forward. Small efforts can bring big benefits.

The amount of time or money you

dedicate to taking care of yourself is up to you. Some people have more time and money than others. Don’t let a

What if you focused on funny things

you have heard over the years - you know, old corny jokes, silly stories, that sort of thing? What if you looked at the lighter side of life and became thankful for what you do have? I have heard of people who laughed themselves right out of sickness, literally. One man watched old slap stick movies and got well. A hospital developed a comedy channel for patients to view. Two poor girls spent hours looking in a mirror making silly faces to help themselves have a good day during the depression.

You can at least care enough about

yourself to dream. You are worth it! Give yourself the gift of freedom to laugh, to sing, to do something you have wanted to do. Make snow angels, build sand castles, or fill your home with the aroma of fresh baked cookies or bread. Light a candle and soak in a nice warm bathtub. Think about memories that make you smile. Enjoy the New Year! Tone up your view on life and live!
