Love is in the air. Each year on
Valentine’s Day, we remember –
Hallmark reminds us constantly so
we can’t forget – to tell our loved
ones that we love them.
How do you express your love for
someone else? Some people tell their
spouse or significant other “I love
you” every day, and even many
times during the day. Others speak
their love less often. Many express
love by the things they do for those
they love, and never once say, “I love
you.”
There is an old Ole and Lena joke
about love: Lena says to Ole, “You
never tell me you love me. Wives like
to hear those words now and then.”
Ole’s response is simple. “I told you
on our wedding day that I love you.
If that changes, I’ll let you know.”
Valentine’s Day is quickly followed
by Ash Wednesday this year. How
has God expressed God’s love for us?
Who would have ever thought it
would be by dying on a cross? Does
God express God’s love daily? In so
many words? Maybe yes, maybe no.
New words are not coming from
Jesus to us directly, but they do
come.
We read them in Scripture; we hear
them in sermons; we hear them
when we remind each other that we
are not alone. We feel them in the
water in the font, and we taste them
in the bread and wine.
We expect God’s love when we pray
for ourselves or our loved ones. We
intuit God’s love when we struggle to
make decisions. We offer God’s love to
those who do not know Jesus’ kind of
love.
And once in a while, we know that
God has spoken to us in ways that
logical folks would think are crazy.
God’s words come to us in a thought
that is more than our thought. They
come to us in an image, a vision, that
is more than just our image. We know
without a doubt that God has spoken
love to us.
Tell your loved ones often that you
love them. Tell them also that Jesus
loves them, no matter what.

Valentine’s Day Party Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, it makes
sense to have a party. So, we’ll have one, from 3pm -5pm on
February 14. This leaves time for more adult activities in the
evening.
The youth have agreed to be the DJs for us, with music from
the 1940s to the 2010s, Big Band to Rock to Disco to, well,
maybe not Hip-hop. We’ll pay the youth to play our songs, so we
can send them to Motown for the Youth Gathering this summer
and on other local adventures.
For those couples who so desire, there will be an opportunity for
renewal of wedding vows led by Pastor Lynn.
The refreshments will be pot-luck appetizers and sweets, so
get out your cookbooks and your party hats and join us for
an afternoon of fun.
JACOB'S JOURNEY classes are held
each Monday afternoon. Everyone who
is interested in learning more about,
"The Signs of the Times," please join us
in Luther Hall at 1-3 P.M.. Bring your
Bible and a 3-ringed note book for
handouts. I look forward to teaching
this class each week and to see some
new students for this fascinating
study. We will all receive a blessing.

No it is not just the Love Boat Theme
it’s our annual Valentine’s Day card ex-
change theme.
A basket in the narthex will hold a
copy of all of our mem-
bers, on a small slip of
paper with names and
addresses.
Please take one or two,
so everyone receives a
Valentine card this year. This might be
the only card that they receive. If you
don’t want to mail it then put it in
their church mailbox.
Let’s go with it and have fun!
Happy Valentine's Day!

When the British Burned the
Whitehouse
The 1814 Invasion of Washington
By Peter Snow.
This book is written from a British
perspective. Unfortunately it is slow
moving with a lot of characters and
somewhat hard to get into, now having
written that I must admit of not
knowing too much about the War of
1812. I’m just amazed that at some of
the ineptness (on both sides) that we
didn’t go back to being a British colony.
Thank goodness James Madison was
president. If you enjoy American
history you will enjoy this book. 365
pages.

WALKING WET: Living one’s baptism
in today’s world
ALOA has for 10 years presented
programs to older Lutherans. This year
the key note speaker is Pastor John
Herman who was elected president of
the ALOA board in February, 2014.
Committed to the renewal of the wider
church, he sees ministry with middle
and older adults as an essential path
toward that end.
After serving 3 Lutheran congregations
in Virginia during his 30 years in
parish ministry, John’s life mission
statement is: “Coaching individuals
and congregations into the fullness of
God’s mission.” His passion is in
leading congregations toward a
discipleship orientation.

From the Library
Recently the Pastor spoke in a sermon
about the ways God speaks to us. How
about from the books in Hope's
Library? There are 2 copies of "A
History of Israel" in the Library, and
the news coverage at this time makes it
timely to read about the beginning of
this small country. The message of the
Old Testament is related to historical
events, a knowledge of Israel's history
is essential to its proper understanding.
Israel's religion is a controlling factor in
her history. This book should be
especially interesting to those who have
studied in the Wisdom Seekers classes.

2. Mix in a dash of optimism and dedication.
3. Blend with a healthy portion of laughter,
celebration, and joy.
4. Bake in a loving home all year long.
5. Share generously with all you meet.

Hello to all,
When you look around our church you will see that the outside has been painted which was long overdue. We also plan to paint the outside of Luther Hall and the Sunday school. We are able to do this
because of donations made to our church improvement fund. We are also going to paint the inside of Luther Hall
and put up a new ceiling. Once again do-nations have been made to allow us to
do the work which was not in our budget. If you donate through your improvement fund envelopes we could even paint our storage buildings, barbeque building and
the band stand building.
We are now trying to obtain bids to repair the roof leaks and remove a very large
dead pine tree. We also need to remove an oak tree to improve the view of the
new sign that will be installed.
Please remember that your donations to the building fund will help us to keep our church and grounds in good condition.
I also want to thank all those people who helped to keep our property in good con-
dition and below our 2014 budget.
Blessings to all!

discuss plans for 2015. It was decided to
do a yard sale in July to raise funds for
the shipping of the Operation Christmas
Child shoeboxes and to host several
coffee hours during the year as well as
make decorations and favors for special
events.
The ladies made Valentine cards to be
given to shut-ins and nursing home
residents.
Our next gathering will be in Luther hall
on February 4 at 1:00PM in Classroom 3.

I’m Overwhelmed Did You Ever Wonder….?
In honor of Martin Luther’s February
18th birthday did you ever wonder about
his most famous song A mighty fortress
is our God? It is based on Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very
present help in trouble.
Martin was born in an area of Germany
known for its music. He grew up
listening to his mother sing. As a young
lad he joined a boys’ choir that sang at
weddings and funerals. He became
proficient with the flute (recorder) and
his volcanic emotions often erupted in
song. When the Protestant Reformation
began, Luther determined to restore
worship to the German Church. He
worked with skilled musicians to create
new music for Christians, to be sung in
the vernacular. He helped revive
congregational singing and wrote a
number of hymns.
In a forward of a book, Luther once
wrote: “ Next to the Word of God, the
noble art of music is the greatest
treasure in the world. It controls our
thought, minds, hearts, and spirits”
I’M OVERWHELMED
Yes, that is the only way to describe the
outpouring of concern, prayers, cards,
and phone calls that I have received
from the congregation regarding my two
shoulder surgeries. Thank you, thank
you, and thank you again. Your love and
concern is heartwarming.

(It is time to begin spending some of the reserve funds as we have proven the congregation is basically stable and the church will not close). b. A continuing resolution to approve and place on the agenda of the 2015 annual congregation meeting that during 2015 council could approve up to $50,000 for capital improvements. Personnel. Diane requested that all personnel be given the day off after Christmas. Agreed by all. Memorial Endowment met Dec. 14, 14. $250.00 was funded for building material for the new altar.
