On September 11, 2001 al-Qaeda launched a series of coordinated terrorist attacksupon the United States, killing 2,977 people. A year later, September 11 was made anational day of mourning referred to as Patriot Day.

A moment of silence is traditionally observed beginning at 8:46 a.m. (EasternDaylight Time), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the NorthTower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Many organizations andestablishments hold memorial ceremonies to honor the victims of 9/11.

In 2009, President Barack Obama rededicated it as Patriot Day and National Day ofPatriot Day and National Day ofService and RemembranceService and Remembrance. On Patriot Day, the national flag is flown at half-mast onall United States government buildings and establishments. Individuals are alsoencouraged to display flags on their homes.
