TO GOD BE THE GLORY When we consider our current state as a school, it is plainly apparent that we have been blessed. As Christians, we know that the ultimate source of all these blessings is our gracious God. In our August newsletter, I introduced our theme for the year, To God Be the Glory. I described how we often neglect to exhibit a spirit of thankfulness even in the face of such self-evident blessings. Although that is an awful malady, a step toward the cure is not that difficult.

I am entering my fourteenth year at Decatur Heritage. We have faculty who have been here twenty years. We have several current board members who were here at the formation of the school. When we old-timers lag in thankfulness, one reason might be that we have forgotten our school’s history. At the other end of the spectrum, we also have many families just joining us this year. To the extent that they lack perspective, that might be due to them not knowing the school’s history. In both cases, the prescription is the same – we need to take a look back to both see from whence we came and to remember God’s guidance and provision through those years.

In looking back over the life of the school, the change in our campus size, location, and buildings has been stunning. Those original board members had dreams of where we might be over 20 years later, but I think our current reality would have exceeded those dreams. In our next issue, I will recall some of the milestones in that journey. Each of the steps involving capital campaigns, new property, and new buildings were momentous in their own right. The cumula-tive effect – our current campus – is a safe, spacious, beautiful, effective place for providing an education to the students of 2017-2018.

As impressive as the story of our physical plant has been, what is truly hum-bling is to remember the contributions of the people who made those things a reality. Later in the year, I will recount some of the ways God has used dedi-cated people to grow and improve this school. Those contributions took many forms: showing leadership in making tough choices about finances and philo-sophical direction, hard work in the classrooms implementing curriculum, sacrificial giving to fund the program, faithful prayer for guidance and protec-tion. As varied as the needs and opportunities at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy were over the years, the gifts and talents of God’s people were up to the task of meeting those challenges – yet another reason to be thankful.

Ms. Hannah Holloway is excited to join the 5th/6th Grade team this year. She will be teaching 5th Grade Reading and Language and 6th Grade Bible. She graduated from The University of North Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in El-ementary Education/Special Education and has taught in Ghana, West Africa and Suwanee, Georgia. She was born in Decatur, but moved to Atlanta when she was six years old. She is happy to

be back in Decatur and to be living close to her family. She attends First Bible Church.

Mrs. Olivia Ngo will be teaching 5th/6th Math and 6th grade History. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work form Auburn University. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in elementary education from Liberty University. She has always been very passionate about helping children and has done so throughout her career. Olivia has been married for two years to Chris and they have one dog, Kimber. They recently moved back to their hometown of Huntsville. In Huntsville, they attend Rivertree Church. Olivia is very excited to be a part of such a wonderful school.

In closing, I will share a thought I told our Upper School students during our opening assembly this year: “While no one would argue that it is not important to be thankful, what if thankfulness is a vital part of our existence? What if, as believers, it is at the very core of who we are created to be? In Isaiah 43:7, God states, ‘…everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.’ Again in verse 21, He says, ‘…the people whom I formed for myself that they may declare my praise.’” Please pray that faculty and staff, parents and students, board and administrators of Decatur Heritage would embody a spirit of thankfulness this year, giving God the glory for what He has done.

You may have noticed before, there is a statement above the front doors inside of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy which says “Preparing Students for Lives of Impact”. While that isn’t the school’s mission or vision statement, I believe it is a good explanation of why we are here. How it is imple-mented varies but overall it is our goal. To equip our school to do this, resources must be available. I am excited that in my new role as Advancement Director, I get the opportunity to partner with the faculty, staff, families and friends of DHCA in order to make this happen. In my position, I will work to ensure that we are sharing, both internally and externally, all of the great things we are doing to pre-pare students for impact and then help people find opportunities to meaningfully support our school.

Currently, Decatur Heritage has several avenues for people to support our school. We have an Annual Fund Campaign; Capital Campaign; fundraising events of our Parent Association, Athletic Booster Club and Masterpiece Guild. This multi-faceted approach allows us to reach different areas of our community in order to raise support.

• The Annual Fund is a year-round campaign that raises funds to support teaching and learning each day in the classroom. The Annual Fund provides for annual expenses of the operating budget. In short, the Annual Fund helps us live.

• Capital Campaigns take place periodically in order to raise money to fund larger projects such as our building/grounds improvement; academic enhancements; debt reduction. Gifts to the capital campaign can be given at one time or in payments over several years. If the Annual Fund helps us live, the Capital Campaign helps us grow.

• Our Parent Association, Athletic Booster Club and Masterpiece Guild all conduct fundraising activities through-out the year. These fundraisers fund projects and activities for Decatur Heritage.

All of these development endeavors are conducted to positively influence our students and help prepare them for lives of impact. Won’t you join us?

Hello! My name is Paizley Peebles and you’re

probably wondering… “Why is Mrs. Peebles writing the

Alumni Spotlight?” I am blessed to be one of the 1st

grade teachers at Decatur Heritage, but I also attended

DHCA from kindergarten until I graduated! DHCA has

been a part of my life for 21 years, and it is such a bless-

ing to now have the opportunity to impact the lives of my

own students- just as so many wonderful teachers impacted

my life during my academic career.

I graduated from Decatur Heritage in 2009 as a

member of the final class to graduate from the Sandlin Road campus. I then

chose to further my education at Samford University and graduated four years

later with my degree in Elementary Education. After graduation I moved

back to Athens and started working at DHCA. Besides slaying dragons and

guarding the castle from intruders every day in Peebles Palace, I am also

married to Zachary Peebles, an electrical engineer, who is the best “teacher

husband” around! We live in Athens, Alabama… one minute down the road

from my parents. We attend Summit Crossing Community Church in Hunts-

ville, and we love to travel, go the lake, and spend time with friends and

family during our free time.

How did DHCA impact my life? Honestly, it still is! I feel that the

best testament to what DHCA means to me is shown through my desire to

want to come back and teach here. My story at Decatur Heritage proves

“you really can go home again,”… and that God’s plan is always WAY better

than your own. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would

have the opportunity to teach with some of the teachers I grew up with! Even

though I spent 13 years at DHCA as a student, my most cherished memories

of Decatur Heritage have come from my last 5 years of teaching 1st grade.

Being able to come back to DHCA and teach where I grew up has been an

indescribable experience. Not only do I get to teach right next door to my

own 1st grade teacher (Mrs. Sandy Stephenson), but I also get to teach with

my mom (Mrs. Kathy Coffey). Growing up, I never got the chance to be in

my Mom’s class. Now, twenty years later, I have earned my own spot on her

pirate ship and have added my own castle of students to the 1st Grade fun!

Without DHCA, I would never have had the opportunity to teach with my

mom, and for that I am so thankful.

As I think back to my time as a student at DHCA, so many things

have changed: a brand new location, new student activities, new traditions,

and even new classes. However, one thing remains the same: Decatur Heri-

tage is full of amazing teachers who love their students. Romans 11:29 states

“For His will and His call are irrevocable.” This verse has guided me through

my years of teaching because I view teaching as my calling. It is so evident

to me that the teachers I work with share that belief too. It wasn’t until I

reached college, and even until I started teaching, that I fully understood

and began to appreciate the impact that my teachers had on my life. My

love of reading, my ability to view the world through a Biblical worldview,

my creativity and love of art, and my love for children all began in the

classrooms of DHCA. The teachers at Decatur Heritage helped me to be-

come who I am today because of their choice to want to make a difference

in my life. I am forever grateful to them and blessed to now have the chance

to impact students of my very own.

I look forward to seeing what God has in store for Decatur Heritage over the

next 21 years!

Our senior year has officially begun and now it is time to focus in and finish out our high school careers strong. I encourage everyone to start the year off on the right foot and to not get behind early, as no one wants to be playing catch up for the rest of the semester. Summer, and the freedom that comes with it, is now gone. This, however, should not discourage us or leave us feeling as if all the fun is over. School is not just sitting in a bland classroom all day, even though we love to act like it is the most boring thing in the world. It brings us together and allows us to have fun with our classmates and learn through discus-sions with each other. There are also school sports, which help build unity within the student body, as we all want our teams to do well. That being said, we as seniors should look to be leaders in every aspect of school. We should strive to set the bar high in the classroom, on the field, and in our daily walk with God so that those looking up to us will push themselves to be better each day. It is up to us to determine the suc-cess of this school year. This is a task we should not take lightly and one that we should ask God to help us in making decisions that will lead everyone closer to him.

As I reflect back to when we found out we were pregnant, I remember friends

and family asking where we planned to send our child to school. We had not

even brought our child home from the hospital and we were already being asked

about her education. It seemed as though the more questions that were asked,

the more confused we became. We had different opinions from many and when

you begin to listen to all the opinions it becomes “noise”. When I become caught

up in this noise, my husband reminds me of 2 verses. The first is Galatians 6:4

“Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without

comparing himself to somebody else”. We appreciate opinions from others but

ultimately we have to pray about what is best for our family and what God wants

for us. The second verse is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,

declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you

hope and a future”.

My husband and I attended public schools and both received a good education. The world is a differ-

ent place now though. We began to discuss what we wanted for Gabrielle as she became older and would

be starting to school. Knowing she would be influenced by her surroundings, we wanted a safe, Godly

environment and teachers that truly cared about the students’ wellbeing, both academically and spiritually.

When Gabrielle started daycare at Church Street Academy, she was surrounded by loving teachers who

taught her about God and God’s love for her. I visited the campus at Decatur Heritage numerous times with

my mom and was touched by the love that I felt there. I really felt as though Gabrielle belonged at Deca-

tur Heritage.

As Gabrielle prepares to enter kindergarten, we are overwhelmed with emotions. It is easy to let the

“noise” try to influence decisions. But as we prayed about it this summer, we have a sense of peace that she

is where God wants her to be. After Gabrielle’s shadow date, she came home wanting me to pull up a song

on the iPad. When asked what song she was referring to, her response was “You know, God’s Not Dead.

The song we sang at Decatur Heritage”. We were shown a picture of Gabrielle at the Power Up service

at her shadow date. She had her arm wrapped around Mrs. Murray’s leg singing about God. As summer

comes to a close and we prepare for her to start her educational journey, we are now being asked “Why

Decatur Heritage?” The picture we were shown always comes to mind. That picture is our answer to “Why

Decatur Heritage”. While our emotions are of a little sadness that our little girl is growing up, there is a

sense of excitement of what God has in store for her at Decatur Heritage.

First Day back at School

Along with eight adults and 26 other members of The Point (LifePoint’s Student Group), six DHCA students served on a mission trip this summer in Memphis. Cole Garner, Myla Garner, Rea Garner, Sheryl Garner, Stephen Ross, and Beth Trippany spent a week in mid-July serving in a program entitled Street Reach. Street Reach runs for the entire summer and Spring Break. It is associated with Brinkley Heights Baptist, a small, urban church with a big heart. Street Reach is a two-part mission trip mixed with what feels like youth church camp. In the morning, the mission teams provide a Backyard Bible Club at several sites throughout inner-city Memphis. The teams go door-to-door, collecting kids and walking together in groups to their identified site. After a fun-filled morning of crafts, music, games, and Bible stories, the kids are walked back to their homes. Over 14 sites, roughly 500 kids are served each day. The mission teams then have varied afternoon assignments, including afternoon Bible clubs, activity centers, soccer camp, nursing home visits, and community service. In the evenings, the entire group participates in a collective worship service. There were 200 youth volunteers (including the adults who also served with their church teams) from churches across the southeast.

The best part about Street Reach is seeing how simply “loving others” changes lives. One of the youth from LifePoint felt an immediate connec-tion to a 4-year old who had autism. This child was non-verbal, never smiled, and always seem to misbehave. With this daily connection between the two, the little boy was laughing and engaging by the end of the week…. and the youth who worked with him was also changed because of that experience. The adult chaperones loved watching these youth grow in confidence as they knocked on doors, engaged with kids, and taught Bible lessons.They saw some of the youth who were shy and quiet begin to share in larger groups. They saw leadership skills formed. They saw personal preferences be set aside for the good of the group. In essence, they watched 32 teenagers become missionaries.

Lucy Orr (‘21) organized, for the sec-ond year in a row, a two-day art camp for elementary students at the Neigh-borhood Christian Center this summer. She used this opportunity to teach the students each day about God’s cre-ation with art projects, bible lessons, games and snacks. Lucy was such a blessing to the students and exhibited such a Christ like attitude by com-bining her love for art, children, and discipleship. She had a great time with the sweet children in our community.

Marla’s children, Maci (‘22) and Ty (‘25) both attend Decatur Heritage. Marla and her husband Shane, along with Ty and Maci at-tend Lifepoint Church.

Hollie Miller is the new Varsity Cheer Coach.She has been coaching for over 10 years. She is mar-

ried to Ricky Miller and they have 5 children and 1 granddaughter. Mrs. Miller obtained her under-

graduate and graduate degrees from UNA and she is the Family and Consumer Science teacher

at Priceville High School. The family attends Cave Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Miller is super

excited to be part of this program and prays for everyone to have a blessed year.

Coach Sutton is a senior at The University of North Alabama. She is currently pursuing an elementary education degree and will graduate December 2018 after completing her student teaching internship. She has cheered competi-tively since she was seven years old, includ-ing school cheer from middle school through college. She has cheered for both Wallace State Community College and The University of North Alabama. She and her fiancé attend Fish Pond Baptist Church, where he is the pastor.

BOOSTER CLUB

The DHCA Shooting team recently competed at the AIM (Academics, Integrity, & Marksmanship) Grand National Singles Championship against a field of 1411 shooters ranging in age up to 23 years old. As a team, we won Runner-up for Junior Gold, Class C. We had two shoot-ers to also win individual honors. Abby Terry won Sub-Junior Class C 3rd in the doubles Championship. Seth Thompson won 3rd place in the High-All-Around for the overall Championship and 3rd Place Junior for the Handi-cap Championship.

Alumni Clay Shaw received a $2,500 scholarship from AIM for the Marksmanship award.

DHCA Shooting Team

Volunteers NeededLast year DHCA Athletics had a fantastic year: the Football team made it to the Elite Eight; the Volleyball team was Area and Regional Champions, and State Runners-up; the Track and Field team was Sectional Runner-up; Area Champions for Girls Basketball; Area Champions and Regional Runner-up for Boys Basketball; Girls Tennis team was Sectional Champions and State Top 10; and the Softball team was Area Champions. With this success comes the need for more and more support from our Booster Club. Please consider joining the Booster Club and get-ting involved, your support is greatly needed and appreciated.

Coach Cassidy Cheatham is a graduate of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy. She is attending Calhoun Community College pursu-ing a nursing degree. She attends Westmeade Baptist Church. Cassidy played volleyball at DHCA for three years, as the Libero. She is very excited to help Coach Armstrong with JV this year, and can’t wait to see what the season has in store for us!

Coach Kaitlyn Cheatham is a graduate of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy. She

plans to futher her education at Calhoun Community College and pursue a nursing

degree. Coach Kaitlyn is employed at Ameri-can Eagle and attends Westmeade Baptist

Church. She looks forward to assisting Coach Armstrong this upcoming year.
