18. TRANSPORTATIONS

The LRT System 2 known as PUTRA LRT, covers a total distance of 29 km linking the eastern and western suburbs of Kuala Lumpur serving some of Kuala Lumpur’s most affluent and heavily populated areas. The total alignment which starts from the Depot in Lembah Subang and ends at Terminal PUTRA in Gombak is 29km in length. The construction was divided into two (2) sections: Section 1, which is from Lembah Subang Depot to Pasar Seni Station and Section 2, which is from Pasar Seni Station to Terminal PUTRA.

Featuring the state-of-the-art transport system, The PUTRA LRT operates with 35 two-car units traveling at an average of 40 km per hour. Its initial capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction is expected to increase to 30,000 in the near future. All trains are fully air-conditioned and provide a service level of 90 seconds during peak hours and between 3 minutes (3) to ten (10) minutes during off-peak hours. The service is provided from 6.00 a.m until 12.00 midnight, on Monday - Saturday, and 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. on Sunday and Public Holidays.

The STAR Sistem Transit Aliran Ringan system was completed in time for the Commonwealth Games that was hosted by Kuala Lumpur in 1998. About 70 per cent of spectators of the international sports event traveled to the Bukit Jalil stadium by STAR. Currently running through 25 stations covering the far corners of the Klang Valley, the system links Sentul Timur, Ampang and Sri Petaling through the city centre.

Prices for a single trip ticket range from 0.70 sen to RM2.90, depending on the distance and destination. The train frequencies also vary, arriving at stations every four to six minutes during peak hours (between 7.30am to 9.00am on Mondays to Saturdays and between 4.30pm and 7.30pm on Mondays to Fridays). At all other times, train frequencies are reduced to a train every six to ten minutes.

With a total of 11 fully elevated stations, each between 600 - 1,000 meters apart, the KL Monorail is currently capable of handling up to a maximum 5,000 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD), operating at 3 minutes headway with 12 numbers of 2-car trains. Traveling time along the 8.6km route from Titiwangsa station to the KL Sentral station is approximately 19 minutes.

19. FOODS

Malay Food A popular breakfast dish is nasi lemak which is rice cooked in coconut milk and served with sambal ikan bilis, squid sambal, egg, cucumber slices and peanuts. Sambal is a very spicy chilli paste, popular with all Malaysians. Nasi dagang is commonly found in Kelantan and Trengganu. It consists of glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and served with fish curry, sambal and cucumber pickle. Indian Food Indian food everywhere, you will encounter the myriad spices or masala, the lentil soup known as dhal, the yoghurt drink known as lassi and the condiments known as chutney. A typical Indian meal starts with a simple rice plate being placed in front of you. If you ask for one in a vegetarian restaurant, you won't get a plate at all, but a large banana leaf. Chinese Food As compared to Kuala Lumpur and surrounds, the type of Chinese food found in the northern state of Penang and the southern state of Johor is Hokkien, Hakka or Hainanese style. The best-known Hainanese dish which is found throughout Malaysia is Hainanese chicken rice. The rice's distinctive aroma comes from the boiling it with chicken stock. It is served with steamed or roasted chicken, cucumber slices and accompanied by clear soup and soy sauce/chilli sauce. Western Cuisine / Fast-food Joints Good Western food can easily be found in the bigger cities but don't expect too much in the smaller villages. In any case staple fast-food joints such as McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken are present throughout the country and have become household names.
