Darley’s Other Offerings Prove Popular... A trio of horses which at one time raced in Godolphinblue or Darley maroon were the subject of much inter-est yesterday. Hip 2018, five-year-old Maple Syrple(American Chance), began her career with Team Valor, winning the Clarendon S. at Woodbine before beingpurchased privately off her runner-up finish to Ashadoin the GII Schuylerville S. in 2003. Offered in foal toMGSW E Dubai (Mr. Prospector), the dark bay waspurchased for $320,000 by Bonnie Baskin. Hip 1827,the three-year-old filly Autumnal (Forestry), was soldfor $180,000 to Fred Hertrich III, who signed the ticketin the name of Stealing For A Living Stable. A daughterof GSP Marie J (Mr. Prospector), the full sister to GSPSisti=s Pride is in foal to Cherokee Run. Stoneway Farmwas the successful bidder on hip 1805, eight-year-oldZahwah (Rahy). Produced by GSW and GISP Funistrada(Fappiano), the bay did her best running at two, scoringher most important victory in the GIII Arlington-Wash-ington Lassie S. Stoneway, who purchased Zahwah=syearling filly by Monarchos for $110,000 at KeenelandSeptember, purchased the mare for $160,000. In addi-tion, Quiet Life (Sunday Silence), an unraced daughterof >96 champion two-year-old filly Storm Song (SummerSquall), was consigned by Mill Ridge for Darley. Cata-loged as hip 2076, the three-year-old was purchased byAustralia=s Vin Cox Bloodstock for $260,000.

The Wright Stuff... Signing tickets on behalf of a new pinhooking opera-tion called Wright Brothers Bloodstock, DromolandFarm=s Gerry Dilger paid $420,000 for a striking chest-nut colt from the first crop of 2004 GI Haskell Invita-tional H. hero Lion Heart (Tale of the Cat). The Jan. 31foal was consigned by Taylor Made and the agency=sMark Taylor was confident that the colt would be ap-pealing, especially to the Saturday market. AHe=s a hellof a foal,@ he commented. AIn retrospect, we shouldprobably have had him in Book 2, but around entry time[Aug. 1], we thought he was a solid horse, but wedidn=t know how good he was going to get. He was abig fish in a small pond and he=s by a promising sire. Hewas a big-time physical standout. It goes to show youthat the market puts the emphasis on conformation.@Hip 2124 is the first foal produced by Shorewalk Drive(Formal Gold), a winning half-sister to the outstandingsprinter Champali and to MSW Drexel Monorail.

Tap-Top Shape... Youngsters by Gainesway=s Tapit (Pulpit) have per-formed well at public auction thus far; his six to sellfrom nine through the ring averaged $135,333, overnine times his 2005 advertised stud fee of $15,000.ATapit was a real talent as a racehorse,@ statedGainesway=s Michael Hernon. AHe=s a very good-look-ing, high-quality horse and he=s a stallion with outstand-ing potential. There=s a strong influence of Unbridled inhis stock. They have plenty of leg underneath andplenty of stretch.@ Tapit, winner of the 2004 GI WoodMemorial S., was responsible for two of the top fivefoals yesterday. Hip 1937, consigned by WarrendaleSales for Runner=s Ridge Farm, was purchased byBlandford Stud for $210,000. The bay colt hails fromthe family of GISW Scorpion. Hip 1792, was purchasedby David Fiske, who also selected Tapit as a yearling. From the immediate family of Unbridled=s Song, the bayfilly is a daughter of Wednesday=s Child (Storm Cat) andwas consigned by Gainesway. Hernon added that hip1792 would likely be returned to either next year=sSaratoga yearling sale or would appear in one of thefirst two books at the 2007 Keeneland September sale.

The Time Is Now... Khalid Abdullah currently holds a slender advantageon France's list of leading owners, and his Passage ofTime has been supplemented to the G1 Criterium deSaint-Cloud for i15,000 in a bid to maintain that posi-tion. An impressive five-length winner of the Oct. 28Listed Montrose Fillies' S. at Newmarket, she alsoseeks to provide trainer Henry Cecil with a first Group 1success since Beat Hollow (GB)'s triumph in the 2000G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Consul General, anotherJuddmonte homebred, has also been supplementedfollowing an eye-catching score in a competitive Corkmaiden Sept. 29. Empire Day galloped away relentlesslywith the Oct. 29 Listed Zetland S. over this trip atNewmarket and comfortably holds Aaim To Prosper onthat form. He will relish this test of stamina. MarioHofer, victorious with Paita (GB) in 2004, relies onMeridia as part of a three-strong German party. Thefacile winner of a Frankfurt maiden Oct. 8, she wasvalue for much more than the four-length winning mar-gin and should not be dismissed lightly.

CONGRATULATIONS! from Fasig-Tipton’sGraded Stakes Winning Star of the Week:

DRUM MAJORThe FTK July Yearling Sale grad won the GIII KnickerbockerH. at Aqueduct 11/4. Lifetime Record: 17-6-2-3, $338,058.

Congratulations tohis connections!

qStar of the WeekqBrought to you by FASIG-TIPTON

PETER BLUM This Week’s Accomplishment:Sold Sassy Pants, in foal to Storm Cat,for $4.5 million.

Education: University of North Carolina grad Family: Son, Josh – 22 years old Principal business: Real estate investor/developer

Current residence: Atlanta, GA

After the Sassy Pants sale, what did you do to celebrate? I did not celebrate because I had very mixed feelings about selling a

mare that is as good as one can get. A big part of me wanted tokeep her and get the Storm Cat colt.

Biggest accomplishment in racing? It would be developing a verygood broodmare band – most of which are homebreds - and beingassociated with Dromoland Farm for so many years.

Most fascinating backstretch character you've met? There aremany, but Hash Weinstein stands out because he looks almost the same as he did when I was a kid.

If you could name a stakes for anybody, who would it be andwhy? Frank Y. Whiteley, Jr. because he was such a great trainerand is a wonderful gentleman.

Who do you think is one of the most underrated stallions outthere? Any proven older stallion that becomes either lessfashionable because of age or suffers declining numbers of stakeswinners. I don’t subscribe to the popular belief old stallions cannotsire top quality racehorses.

What was your first job? Hot walker at Belmont and Aqueduct (stillhave my original license)

Favorite sports team? Atlanta Braves How would you describe the present state of Thoroughbred

racing? There are too many factions and no centralizedleadership. I doubt slots will be the long-term solution for the sport.I wish the younger generation could know the sport the way it wasin the ‘60s and early ‘70s, and more emphasis needs to be placedon marketing racing to them.

The best racehorse you have ever seen? Kelso, because I don’tremember any horse performing at his level over so long a periodof time.

The fastest racehorse you have ever seen? Mr. Prospector The best jockey you have ever seen? I would rank them: 1. Arcaro,

2. Baeza, 3. Shoemaker – but Jerry Bailey always knew where tobe in a race and is the smartest rider I have seen.

What is the most exciting race you ever won? It would probablybe between Rising Award winning by a nose (paying $99) and LifeCycle (a colt I bought for $1,400 at Fasig Tipton) setting a newtrack record in the GI Hollywood Invitational.

BADGE OF SILVER HEADED TO AIRDRIE Badgeof Silver (Silver Deputy--Silveroo, by Silver Hawk), whocame back after a 10-month layoff to be third in the GI

Breeders= Cup Mile, will retireto Mr. and Mrs. Brereton C.Jones=s Airdrie Stud in Ken-tucky at the conclusion ofhis racing career. The six-year-old has compiled a re-cord of 15-7-3-1 and earn-ings of $987,892 for ownersKenneth and Sarah Ramsey. He is scheduled to make onemore start before heading to

stud, but it has not yet been decided if he will end hiscareer in the Nov. 24 GI Citation H. on the Hollywoodturf or the Nov. 25 GI Cigar Mile H. on the dirt at Aque-duct. A maiden winner in his only outing at two, Badgeof Silver was two-for-three as a sophomore, taking theGIII Risen Star S. before being sidelined. He returned torun second in the GI Cigar Mile at the end of 2004, andcaptured the GIII Hal=s Hope H. and GII New Orleans H.in 2005. In his only other appearance this term, thedark bay posted a 2 1/2-length tally when making histurf debut in the GII San Gabriel H. in January. AWecouldn=t be more excited over Badge of Silver=s pros-pects of being a top stallion,@ Brereton Jones said. AThisis a brilliant racehorse who was fast and precociousenough to break his maiden by nine lengths as an Apriltwo-year-old, going 4 1/2 furlongs in :51 and change, but was also versatile enough to beat the best going amile and an eighth, while also running within a head ofAragorn (Ire) in the Breeders= Cup Mile. Add the factthat he is a very good-looking, well-balanced and cor-rect horse with good size and we believe he has all themakings of a top commercial and, most importantly,top-producing sire.@ A stud fee has not yet been set.

DISCREET CAT WORKS Prepping for the Nov. 25GI Hill >n= Dale Cigar Mile H., Discreet Cat (Forestry)worked six furlongs in a bullet 1:13.55 over theBelmont Park main track yesterday morning. The three-year-old has not been out since taking the Oct. 1 GIIJerome BC H. by 10 1/4 lengths, where he ran hisrecord to a perfect five-for-five. AThe track was prettydemanding [yesterday] morning,@ said Rick Mettee, assistant to trainer Saeed bin Suroor. AGoing six fur-longs was tough, and he got a little tired. But wewanted him to get a little tired. He got a lot out of thiswork. He=ll work once more next week, anywhere be-tween Friday and Monday, depending on the weather.@

Brilliant Scratched from Commonwealth Turf: Brilliant (War Chant), the morning-line favorite foryesterday=s Commonwealth Turf S. at Churchill Downs, had to be scratched after tying up following a routinegallop Friday morning. AFor some unknown reason, thiscolt got a little tight for a few minutes--basically, hetied up a little bit,@ trainer Neil Howard said. AWe stoodhim in the gate, just as a matter of policy. There wasnot any rhyme or reason for him to do it.@ The coltreturned to the track yesterday, but the decision wasmade to skip the race. AI hated to scratch him, but he=sa nice horse and the result you=re going to get most ofthe time when you run a horse after they tie up is thatthey=re not going to get enough oxygen to the mus-cles,@ Howard said. AThey almost run like they=ve bled. When you need the horse most at the quarter pole, they=ll start slowing down a little bit.@ He added, AIreally do think the long and short of it is that the horseis just maybe tailing off just a little bit.
