ditorialWelcome to the web only Marlpit for September. Created to report the news and events received by the Compilation Editor since the printed joint August / September edition went to press. Also to further promote those events for September, it seems that it is the month for Garage Sales, we hope the weather is kind for all of you.

Hopefully by the time this is read all of our young people who have waited most of their holidays will have received good news in the yearly round of

results. We hope plans for 6th form and Universities have been realised as Summer draws to a close and the new school year begins.

The recent Olympic domination by Team GB is an inspirational for all to keep the ball rolling for the next games in Japan. Here on The Marlpit patch we have a few sporting activities reporting in, the bowls clubs, Coltishall Jags running club, North Walsham Rugby Club who play in Scottow to the fore plus our help for the nearest senior football club in Wroxham. Perhaps some of you “Quizzers” may be interested in their

Quiz n Chips on October 21st, full details inside. We have included sporting fixtures in our calendar and What’s on page and are happy to include more from other local teams as well as reports and pictures from their endeavours, we can only do it if someone sends us the details.

We have also left in the commercial advertising from August September for this web edition. Please think of the Marlpit when you need anything and check our advertisers first, without them we would not be able to do what we do every month. Kind donations from individuals and those organisations who have benefited from our advertising also help enormously to keep us afloat.

As this is only a web edition perhaps a good time to promote web advertising. Every time some one opens the current edition page on our website we have 4 opportunities to promote local businesses. If you would like to take part for £25 a year we will include a logo and link to your website or if you wish a special page on ours.

Lastly the front page flash is still available for October, let us know very soon so we can finalise copy and payment should you would like a prime spot for just £25, November issue is already booked so think ahead if this is a good way for you to promote your business or event.

Stand by for seal pups!Twenty-five years ago a handful of Atlantic grey seals struggled to raise pups on the quiet beaches of Horsey and Winterton. Needing sanctuary above the tide-line where they could give birth and nourish their single pup, these wide stretches of gently sloping sands sheltered by high dunes, offered grey seals the perfect rookery site. Local villagers and winter visitors were excited to come across appealing, fluffy, white pups on their beach walks, and news about the babies gradually spread and more people came to see them. Some of them brought along their dogs. Well-meaning visitors tried to return pups to the sea, where they thought they should be.

Nervous females, unable to cope with disturbance, abandoned newly born pups, leaving them to starve. Breeding success was low in those times but a few pups did survive – 4 in 1994-5 - and the seals continued to turn up, winter after winter. Right from the start local people did their best to help the seals, keeping an eye on them, and asking other people to give them space. Among them was the indefatigable John Heseltine, who is commemorated on interpretation boards on the site. John’s concern to look after those first seals catalysed the development of the wardening we see today, and the notes he made were the start of regular counting and recording of the progress of the Horsey rookery, data used in marine mammal research.

That was 25 years ago. From those small beginnings, more than 1200 pups were born on these same beaches in the winter of 2015-16. Now, however, the beach at Horsey is voluntarily closed to visitors from November to January, and 150 seal wardens volunteer to help the seals by greeting and talking to visitors. The wardens explain what is happening in the rookery and guide visitors to viewing places where they get best views of this wonderful, natural, wildlife spectacle. The number of visitors has grown dramatically in recent years, encouraged by reports and pictures in the press, and posts on social media, and it is estimated that 60-70 thousand people visited the Horsey site in the three months from November 2015. For many who live close, a visit has become a regular part of their Christmas celebrations, but visitors also come from many parts of UK and from other countries. Speaking to them is rewarding for the wardens, and it’s clear that visitors are keen to understand what is going on in the unfolding dramas taking place on the beach before them. Protective mothers defend their territories from the approach of another seal, or signal to a male, hissing open-mouthed, and gesturing with agitated flippers, that mating is not yet an option. Visitors stare at the unexpected turn of speed of a huge beach master expelling an intruding male, or for the very lucky, are present at the moment of birth itself, usually quickly over and witnessed by just a few.

In 2002 rangers from English Nature (now called Natural England) and the Broads Authority, encouraged by John Buxton, landowner and conservationist, formalised wardening

the site. Seal Project rangers recruited and trained a small band of seal wardens, about a dozen at that time. 50 births were recorded in their first season. The project grew; later, a voluntary beach closure was introduced and viewing platforms were constructed on the dunes overlooking the rookery. Seal births, visitors and numbers increased slowly over the following years. In 2008 the international banking crisis occurred and government grants were reduced, and in 2011, both Natural England and the Broads Authority were forced to withdraw their financial support. Facing the possibility of having to close the

seal project, the suggestion was made that a community group could take over its management and Friends of Horsey Seals was inaugurated in 2012.

The new organisation was severely tested in December 2013 when meteorological conditions combined in a tidal surge, causing flooding along the east coast, and sweeping hundreds of seals and pups off Horsey’s beaches. Around 180

pups were lost that night, but others were deposited on the broader beach near Winterton. Seal wardens showed their mettle and determination to help. Many of the pups were newly born and still suckling. Very few were reunited with their parent. Those most in danger of starvation were lifted off the beach by RSPCA, aided by wardens, and transported to RSPCA’s Wildlife Centre at East Winch, where staff and volunteers put in hours of work to care for them, and members of the public, responded generously to an appeal led by Archant Newspapers which helped to cover the costs.

Horsey’s seals featured again in the national news last season when apparent twins were born on the dunes. Twin births in the wild are known to occur, but the survival of one or both pups would be unlikely. In this case the mother accepted both pups and they survived and prospered with her for 10 days. At that stage her milk would have been exhausted and she left them.

Without help survival at that age was doubtful and RSPCA East Winch were again asked to help. Determined to prove the relationship of the pups, David Vyse, from FoHS committee, who was at Horsey on the day of the births, collected natal blood and obtained tissue samples, arranging DNA testing by a Norwegian Marine Institute. After many weeks the result was declared and the pups were confirmed to be twins.

Now in its fifth year Friends of Horsey Seals (FoHS) is preparing for another season of seal births. Throughout the project visitors have been welcomed and looked after by seal wardens who know that talking to people about the seals and their life cycle is key to their enjoyment of the spectacle, and increases their understanding of how to act when seals are close by.

Each year FoHS deals with more seal births and more visitors. A team of enthusiastic volunteers warden year after year, but every year more volunteers are needed to share the load and FoHS is recruiting now. If you have an interest in nature, enjoy talking to people, like being outdoors even when it’s cold - and you have some time to offer weekdays and weekends, get in touch with Friends of Horsey Seals and find out more. FoHS will be very happy to train you.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…’

We may only be just past the Summer Bank Holiday, but attention is already turning to Christmas! Whilst, for many, this is will be something to look forward to, Voluntary Norfolk is today highlighting the plight of those for whom the prospect of the festive season may be a less happy occasion, and encouraging people across North Norfolk and Broadland to become part of the solution!

‘Christmas is often the focal point for many people experiencing loneliness’, according to Jonny Wood and Natalie Hickman, Voluntary Norfolk’s co-ordinators in North Norfolk, ‘but it is a year-round problem. Nowadays, when preparations for Christmas seem to begin even before summer has ended, this just underlines people’s sense of loneliness as they contemplate the likelihood of spending autumn and winter alone’.

Jonny and Natalie run the North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, a befriending service run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community. The most popular activity is a simple coffee and chat, but, depending on what volunteers wish to offer, it could involve a short walk, a game or craft

activity, a quick hand with something in the house or garden or even a short trip out in the car.

‘Volunteers can make an immense difference in a very short space of time’, according to Jonny and Natalie, ‘a weekly visit of maybe just an hour or two can leave people feeling that there is ‘someone out there’ who cares about them, and can dramatically reduce their sense of loneliness, even during the time they do spend by themselves.’

People often enquire about getting involved as Christmas approaches, but, as far as Jonny and Natalie are concerned, the earlier the better! ‘Our enrolment and induction process means it takes a little time before we can introduce a new volunteer to someone. If, for instance, a new enquirer contacts us in early December, we may not be able to get them introduced before Christmas. We are encouraging people to think about getting involved now so that volunteers can get started well before the clocks go back and the festive season takes over!

If you’d be interested in making a real difference to someone else’s life – not just for Christmas but in the run-up to it and beyond – then Jonny and Natalie would love to hear from you. You’ll need to be 18 years old or over, willing to undergo a DBS (police) check (which will be arranged at no cost to you) and provide two references, but in return you’ll get induction training on the basics of befriending, the ongoing support of a co-ordinator and, above all, the immense gratitude of someone who will be so pleased to share some of their life with you.

For further details please contact Jonny Wood or Natalie Hickman at Voluntary Norfolk on 01263 519454 or

[email protected] . Alternatively, visit them at their office at Merchants’ Place, 16 Church Street,

Cromer, NR27 9ES.

Re: Lower Common

The Editor

Again I enjoyed the latest edition of the Marlpit, a great source of news from the surrounding area. One item in particular was of interest. Why do the Commons trust have such problems with legitimate use of the Lower Common? I was astounded that they would not allow the country’s armed forces from RAF Marham to use the common on a fortnightly basis for training exercises. I would have thought that it was the duty of us all to support them in any way we can. Why is the Trust so worried about what it might look like to others. The use by RAF personnel could in no way be construed as a commercial venture. It is interesting that they allow the two public houses to use the Trusts half of the car park for an annual fee. I am sure that I would not be alone in the village in encouraging them to reconsider their decision for the good of the country and the reputation of Coltishall as a village that has always supported the RAF.

If they do not feel able to allow the use of the Common perhaps Mr Smith could allow the RAF access to the water from his island.

In order that we all, as parishioners, can better understand the restrictions that the Commons Trustees has to operate under, perhaps they could make a copy of the Trust Deed available to us on the Parish web site.

Peter BakerReply to above

The Editor

The Commons Trust would like to respond to the letter from Peter Baker and his anonymous friends. In this letter Mr. Baker calls into question the honesty, integrity and sense of duty of

the Commons Trust in a public forum. We note that he seems to have a penchant for offering other peoples’ facilities and services without any indication of consent. With regard to how we view our duty; we always support and are sympathetic towards the armed forces, not just the RAF, but feel no obligation to accede to every request. Hopefully, it will not have escaped Mr. Baker’s attention that the initial request for one session was granted. When a subsequent request was received for fortnightly use this was considered too frequent, especially in the summer months. It does pose the question ‘why Coltishall’ when there are many other suitable venues between Marham and Coltishall and we did suggest some that may be possible to use with the appropriate consent. As you will see from item 1 below from the ‘Declaration of Trust’ our duty is first and foremost to the parishioners of Coltishall. To look after the Common so that it can be enjoyed by all. Further, as will be seen from item 6 from the relevant extract from our Trust Deed we are unable to allow commercial activities on the land. To any of the many people who operate similar activities on a commercial basis it would look no different to any other commercial activity; it would look as though we had favoured one over another. Further consideration was also given to the boat traffic on the river, their right to moor up and the impact on the pubs and local businesses if they are unable to moor. We may allow charitable events on the Commons, such as the Christmas carol service and the W.I. cake sales, and are very happy to do so. We would have thought that Mr. Baker’s time as a Parish Councillor would have equipped him with sufficient knowledge to understand why it is that the pubs have use of the car park. For those who are less well acquainted with village affairs the

reason is thus: as part of the transaction between Kings College (the former freeholder of the land) and the newly formed Coltishall Commons Management Trust (at the time when the freehold was purchased) it was a condition of the sale that the car parks should be provided and maintained, at a commercial rent, whilst the buildings operate as public houses. Extracts from the Declaration of Trust made on twenty seventh of March 1980. (when the Parish Council owned the lease on the land) “1. The Trustees shall henceforth stand possessed of the Common for the residue of the term demised by the Lease together with such further property as may from time to time become vested in them for the purposes hereinafter declared UPON TRUST that the same shall be used as a public open space for recreation for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Parish of Coltishall in the County of Norfolk and for such other charitable purposes ancillary thereto as the Trustees shall from time to time think fit” “6. The Trustees shall have power to collect and receive money and other property by any lawful method provided that the Trustees shall not undertake any permanent trading activities in raising funds for the said object” Item 6 was put into the Deed to ensure that the Trust was not trading to the detriment of the adjacent businesses. I hope the good people of Coltishall can appreciate that our reasons are based on our need to protect and preserve the Commons for the benefit of parishioners, a responsibility we take very seriously.

Management Trust

Well here we are, another month gone and we are heading towards the end of summer. Time does seem to fly by, as we get older.

The better weather has seen the Precinct Tombola busy, as many of the holidaymakers try their luck and it will stay open until the end of the month, unless we have an Indian summer, in which case we will take advantage and extend our opening dates!

Our next Craft Fair is being held on 4th September at the Broadland Youth and Community Centre, between 10am and 3pm. A wide selection of good quality, hand made, locally produce items will be available at reasonable prices. Admission is free and refreshments are available as usual.

We are holding the first ever HOVETON GARAGE SALE on SUNDAY 18th SEPTEMBER, between 9am and 2pm. The cost to take part is £5.00, so why not have a good sort through all your treasures and sell those items you no longer want from the comfort of your own garage. Those of you who are looking for a bargain can purchase a map, showing the location of those taking part, for £1 from the Lions Tombola stall in the Precinct, from 8.30am on he day. All Proceeds will go to the Lions Charity Fund to support local deserving causes.

Something to look forward to is our CHARITY CONCERT on 15th OCTOBER at the Broadland High School, 7.30, featuring the ROYAL AIR FORCE SQUADRONAIRES BIG BAND. Tickets cost £16, which includes a free glass of wine or a soft drink on arrival, and can be purchased from the Lions Shop in the Precinct, or by telephoning Lion Suzanne Barnett on 01603 782002 or Lion Mick Holden on 01603 781310. This is an opportunity to see this world famous band on you own doorstep, at a cost, which is much less than you would pay at the theatre. Much of their repertoire are “musical standards” and will be instantly recognisable by most, if not all, of those of us who are that little bit older. Tickets are strictly limited in number, so don’t miss out on the chance to see this great band. All proceeds will be split between the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and the Lions Charity Fund.

This months £100 shop draw was won by Sarah Tompkins from Horning, who donated items to the shop. The monies will go St Johns Church.

If you have some time available and would like to put it to good use, while at the same time making friends and having fun, then why not come and find out what we are all about. We meet at the Broadland

Youth and Community Centre on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 8pm and everyone is welcome. Alternatively give either myself a ring on 01603 784093 or our Membership Chairperson Suzanne Barnett on 01603 78202. We are a friendly bunch and you will be made very welcome.

Police issue warning about bogus callers [Issued Aug 31st 2016] Police are urging residents to be vigilant following a number of suspected bogus caller incidents in recent weeks.Officers have received reports of incidents in the Norwich, Blakeney, Great Yarmouth, Horning, Poringland and Costessey areas. In each case a man has knocked at the door claiming to be there to either read a gas or electricity meter, or to check the boiler. Police are reminding householders to be vigilant when dealing with cold callers and offer the following advice:

● Close and lock the back door before answering the front door.

● Use a spy hole or window to look at the caller before answering the door.

● If you do not recognise the caller, speak to them through the closed door.

● If the caller is selling something or offering work on your home, tell them you are not interested and ask them to leave.

● If they do not leave or you need assistance then call the police.

● If the caller is valid still always ask for proof of identity. Phone the company or organisation the caller claims to be from while the

caller waits outside.

● Tell someone you trust about the uninvited callers to your home.

● If necessary, report it to police with a description of the people involved and details of their vehicle if possible.

To report suspicious activity call Norfolk Constabulary on 101. In an emergency always dial 999

Weekly crime summary [26 August 2016] Norfolk Police are reminding residents of the importance of water safety as the current warm weather looks to continue over the bank holiday weekend. We would urge people to be aware of the potential dangers of swimming in the sea or diving into rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

● Beware of powerful tidal waters and always read and obey any safety signs.● Do not jump or dive into rivers. Quick entry into cold water can cause your body to go into shock. Low water temperature

can numb limbs and claim lives.● You won’t be able to judge the depth of water just by looking and there could be submerged hazards such as weeds, rub-

bish or pollution.● There may be strong currents, which could pull you downstream or under the surface of the water.● Never go into water if you have been drinking alcohol.● Don’t assume because you can swim in a pool that you can deal with the challenges of open water swimming. Swim in safe

areas, or where there is supervision and/or a lifeguard.●

A148 fatal collision, Bale – appeal to lorry driver

Police are urging the driver of a lorry seen travelling on the A148 at Bale to come forward, as they could hold information about a fatal collision.

It follows an incident on the Fakenham Road, near to Rectory Farm, on Monday afternoon just before 4pm when two vehicles were involved in a collision.

Officers are keen to trace the driver of an articulated lorry with a white cab with what appears to be a bulk trailer with a red cover travelling towards Fakenham. The vehicle was not involved in the collision but the driver could hold important information about the driving manner of the vehicles involved.

A red Mitsubishi Colt travelling towards Fakenham was involved in a collision with a red VW Tiguan travelling in the opposite direc-tion towards Holt.

COLTISHALL COMMONS MANAGEMENT TRUST Registered Charity Number 279903

The Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held at the Church Rooms on 18 August 2016 Nigel Noble, Tracy Lister, Michael Spinks, Geoffrey Spinks, Bill Musson, Nigel Haines, Mark Rischmiller and Peter Croot are our Trustees. We were pleased to welcome Mr Tovell, the only parishioner to attend. Chairman Nigel Noble explained that Trustees pool their experience and skills to manage the Commons in accordance with the aims of the Trust, which are to preserve and protect them. This meeting was an overview of the Trust’s work during the last year. Lower Common Dog bins . Bins are emptied on Fridays, although some weeks have been missed recently. Following calls to Broadland DC they have now been emptied. A new bin was installed at the Anchor Street end as the existing bin was inconspicuous and deemed too far for dog-owners to walk. Grass cutting. Trustees have not been too happy with the mowing of the Commons, and following representations to the contractor are now happy to report that the finish has improved. Norse have been doing 9 cuts per season, plus some intermediate cuts to make their contracted work easier. However, the areas are Commons, not lawns. Quotations for the forthcoming season have been requested, and discussions are ongoing. Litter bins. Peter Croot and Bill Musson laid a slab base for one green litter bin which was then resited to encourage boaters to dispose of their waste appropriately. Many boaters were unaware that bins were available. Peter Croot and Bill Musson also undertook a litter-pick, removing boaters’ waste from around dog-bins. Car park. Repairs are always an ongoing job; the surface condition is continually monitored. EDF lease. A new lease is being drawn up for the sub-stations at both Lower and Upper Commons as the previous one has expired. Upper Common Trees The Broads Authority approved work to crown-lift the limes to avoid impact damage from high-sided vehicles, but refused permission to pollard the poplar on the grounds that the request was not justifiable, would reduce the amenity value, and create an ongoing maintenance obligation. This tree has already been a significant financial burden to the Trust, and is considered by Trustees to be a potential hazard to the public, a view confirmed in two independent surveys commissioned by the Trust. It is subject to a Tree Preservation Order, so Trustees’ hands are tied. The bus service will re-start on the old route in September, hence the need to crown-lift the limes.

Fencing. Michael and Geoffrey Spinks had fenced around the grazing marsh to ensure the safety of cattle. Signs warning of cattle were installed, but one had been torn down and was subsequently found at Horstead Mill, and replaced. Grazing. The grazing marsh had been cut twice by Michael and Geoffrey Spinks to control pin rush. Cutting is difficult work, dependent on dry weather to allow heavy machinery to access the area. There will be highland cattle on the marsh this winter to graze on the pin rush. The drains are due to be cleared this financial year. Hard-standing. The area has been levelled and top-dressed with some 40 tonnes of Type 1 stones, and new marker-posts of a larger size installed. Ling Common. The Common is in a reasonable condition, improvements are made each year but no major work is planned. A horse was grazing on the area for a few days recently, with Trustees’ permission. Disclaimer notices have been installed, as on the other Commons. Risk Assessments. Quarterly risk assessments are carried out in accordance with good practice requirements, and reported to meetings for any remedial action. An assessment will be carried out in the next few weeks, and ash die-back is constantly monitored. Financial report.

August 2016/Page 1 of 2 The financial year April 2015-March 2016 showed a decrease in income which fell by £1250 to £6913 due to reduced advertising, grants and recycling income, and in donations. Expenditure increased by some £6000 to £12170 due to tree works which increased by £500 on the previous year, legal fees of £2000, car park repairs £2684, grass cutting £1200, and various minor repairs and purchases. A tree survey and works will be carried out in 2016-17, and dyke clearance on the marsh will be necessary. The culvert by the bridge on Lower Common is partially clogged with rushes and branches so must be cleared. Due to the proximity of trees accessing the culvert with a digger is difficult. Wooden posts are gradually being replaced with metal ones but are costly. Public Forum.Tony Tovell commented that it is easy to criticise organisations, and that work done is often unappreciated by the general public. He commended the Trust for their management of the Commons, which he felt should be recognised and applauded. He was thanked for his kind comments. It was suggested that a thorn hedge could in time replace or supplement the barbed wire fence at Upper Common, which is necessary to prevent the cattle from escaping, but a potential hazard to the public. A second plain wire fence could be installed until a hedge had grown sufficiently.

On August 21st we went along as new dog owners to the Westover Dog Show in North Walsham and were not disappointed. It was good to see so many bitzas competing a range of classes to suit one and all. Dolly a 10 going on 11 year old Maltese qualified for the veterans class as well as her owner. Sadly no prizes but not disappointed as it was time for us to leave, she is not used to people and other dogs - [getting better day by day] and is still a little bit sparky.

It was a special day for one of the staff and definitely worthy of a cake. Chris Tomlinson has been with Westover Vets for 25 years and moved from large animal work to small animal nearly 8 years ago (although he still keeps his

hand in with large animal work from time to time!). A larger than like character standing out above all of his colleagues was typically bashful in response, having previously excelled with some colourful variance of the key word describing the class. Best Shaggy dog class, we’ll say no more.

Toby Morell, the Vet who sends in regular stories for The Marlpit was the man on the mike introducing dogs and owners for the other classes. The Westover team all turned out to help. Henry Hulme [second from right below] was on hand to help his dad while Archie their veteran springer spaniel sat it out with his sister and mum.

We left early, before the “Dog most like it’s owner” Class for which we would have had nochance. How could we look as good as the little terror wrapped around my keyboard.

“Maintain your mental capacity over your life span.” So suggested Dr Julia Badger in her talk at the last U3A general meeting. Research being conducted at Oxford University shows a definite link between active mental and physical engagement and ‘cognitive reserve’. And several members of the audience participated in both her non-verbal reasoning and verbal recognition trials with interest and enthusiasm.

Membership in this local branch continues

to grow – up to 86 now, and with it an increase in the number of interest groups, ranging from physical pursuits such as walking, bird watching

and petanque, to the social

gatherings of French conversation and dining out, to arts groups like painting, photography, play reading and music appreciation, and to discovery activities like local history and garden visits. Strategy games of chess and mah-jong are due to start in September. The next

general meeting will be held at The Hub in Wroxham at 2.30 on Tuesday

September 13th.

The University of the 3rd Age is open to everyone in the community over the age of 55; it is a great way of meeting friendly and like-minded people and engaging in those all-important ‘mental-active’ activities that help to keep us happy and healthy.

Interested? Contact Sue Badger (secretary) at 01603 737572 or by email on [email protected] or John Long (chairman) at 01603 722254 or email [email protected].

Conversely, visit our website on www.u3awroxham.co.uk.

Secretary Sue Badger

Once again we were lucky to have a lovely summers day for our village fete. A special thank you to everyone who helped with this event, as I’m sure most of you will know, it is a lot of

work to put together. Thank you also to everyone who came and supported us.

How quickly the months have passed, and on Thursday 11 August we all met at the Preston Rooms for the Potato Weigh in and Supper. Twenty- four of us brought our buckets in the hope that somewhere,

lurking in the bottom, there would be a crop of potatoes. It proved to be a ‘mixed bag’ both in bucket size and crop! The winner of the evening was Anne Wilson with a whopping 6lb 14oz, with her husband John coming second with 5lb 13oz. Isabel Payne won the children’s category with a weight of 1lb 14oz. We had some delicious potato dishes to follow, including sweet and savoury muffins, bread, pies, frittata’s and of course chips!

The committee is busy planning the next event, the Village Show on September 3rd. Hopefully you will have received your Schedule of Entry in the last edition and be thinking about what you can enter. It has been a strange year in the garden, so it will

interesting to see what we have all managed to produce in the torrents of rain and mini heat wave of recent weeks. The Show is all done in the spirit of good fun and ‘joining in’, so please don’t be put off thinking it will be too serious to have a go.

Please come and support the event, even if you don’t want to enter you are welcome to view at 3.30pm after judging, when tea, coffee, soft drinks and cakes will be on sale. At the end of the afternoon most entries are then put up for auction, which is always good fun.

After a busy summer with our spectacular “win a car” raffle in aid of EACH, the East Anglia Air Ambulance, the End Polio Now campaign and other charities supported by our rotary club, there is still time to buy tickets, with the

draw due to take place at Castle Mall in Norwich on 20th November. Tickets are available from NMG showrooms in Norwich and from Abbott’s estate agents in the Precinct, Hoveton. Our August appearances included Cromer carnival, the “Tour de Broads” cycle race at Coltishall air field, Wroxham Barns, and the Aylsham show and we are also planning to be at the Forum in Norwich, hopefully for

the Rock around the Forum event on September 3rd. Tickets are also available from any of our members, so do try and have a go…it is all in aid of some great causes and someone will definitely be driving off in a brand new car!

We are planning a fund raising effort for October to

recognize Polio Day to support the Rotary “End Polio Now” campaign – we are very close to eradicating this terrible disease and just need to complete the task. The theme is “purple for polio” to reflect the colour of the ink placed on children’s fingers to show that they have received the oral vaccine, and amongst other activities we are planning to plant swathes of purple crocus bulbs this autumn in Wroxham, Horning and Hoveton.

We are always pleased to welcome more new members into the club - you can pop along and meet us any Monday evening if you fancy finding out a bit more about us and what we get up to, but please contact our secretary Anne Kittle in advance on 07887523071 to check the meeting details and so we can ensure we have food for you. Whether you have recently lost a loved one, or whether your loss was some time ago, we know that it is incredibly painful, and that it affects people in deep and surprising ways. Griefshare is a place where you can receive support through the journey of grief.

The Griefshare group will meet weekly for nine or ten weeks next term, starting in September. During this time we will watch a video, talk, share our experiences (as much as you want to – there is no pressure put on anyone) and support each other. We’ll have tea and cake too!

Each week we will meet from 7pm to 9pm at The River Rooms in the heart of Coltishall. The evening will work like this:

• Welcome and introductions.

• Watching a DVD, for about half an hour. The Griefshare videos feature a range of people. Lots of them are ordinary people who have lost loved ones. There are also counsellors and Christian ministers

(most of whom have also suffered loss) speaking from their wisdom and experience.

• Tea, coffee and snacks.

• Group discussion of the material presented in the video and any questions or issues it raised.

There is also a workbook that goes with the course with information and weekly exercises that you can do to get more benefit from the course.

The course is being run by Broadgrace church, and the material is coming from a Christian perspective on life, death and God. You do not have to be a Christian or a member of the church to come along, and we will not be expecting everyone to agree with everything said on the videos! The church members who will be running the group have all been through it ourselves and think that it would be useful for many people suffering with grief, whether they have a faith or not. You are welcome.

The only cost for the course is buying the workbook, which costs £15. There is a bursary fund available if you cannot afford this. There will be no charge for

tea, coffee or anything else.

Come and see

If you think this might be a helpful group for you, and would like to find out more, we will be running a ‘Griefshare: come and see’ evening on Tuesday 19 July, 7-9pm at The River Rooms, Coltishall.

We will watch the first session on DVD, and give a full explanation of the course, as well as trying to answer any questions. Obviously, you’re not committing to anything by coming to find out at this evening. The evening is free of cost.

If you would like more information, then you can get in touch with John Hindley, the minister of Broadgrace Church, and

Griefshare group leader, on 01603 737974 or [email protected]

Hoveton, Wroxham and District Gardening ClubGardening Tips for August and September

● Keep watering in your garden as required, especially your tubs and containers.● Keep those hoes working through your beds and borders to stop those weeds from

germinating.● Dead head annuals, roses, sweet peas and dahlias.● Cut back flowered perennials and remove any dying leaves.● Trim hedges like privet, beech, leylandii and lonicera.● Keep your lawns trimmed and selective weed kill, before the autumn if necessary.● If you are buying bulbs, think through what you require and where in the garden you will

plant them.● Lift potatoes, when ready. Also lift the remaining shallots and onions. ● Keep picking French and runner beans. Harvest marrows and courgettes.● In the pond area, keep feeding the fish, remove any unwanted weed and find a net, to put

over the pond before the autumn leaves start falling.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and get ideas from open gardens to use in your garden in the future.
