Hi everyone, TSB’s Chief Executive Paul Pester says Britain is ready for interest rate rises. He says "The key thing I remember is for a £100,000 mortgage a 0.25% interest rate rise means about an extra £20 a month for mortgage customers, so an extra £5 a week”. "What I'm saying to my customers is try to find a way now to start thinking where you're going to get that extra £5 a week from". The obvious flaw in this argument is that you can’t buy a house for £100K, more likely you would need £200K - £250 for a modest family home. So that makes it £50 per month and not £20. At the end of last year, the Bank of England published research which forecast that if interest rates were to rise by 2% and incomes remained unchanged then 1 in 8 households would have to significantly curtail spending or find ways of earning more. Easier said than done. My daughter and son in law (catering industry) were, 2 years ago on 40 – 45 hours per week each. They are now both on zero hour contracts.

Paul Pester, like so many of his kind are simply off the scale for being out of touch with the normal working person having pocketed nearly £1.9m in pay and perks, the TSB’s annual report revealed. It also announced its profits had doubled to £170m last year. On balance Paul Pester is by no way top of the “bonus league” Antony Jenkins, the boss of Barclays, was awarded £5.3m in shares in March of this year.

The Robin Hood Tax campaign’s David Hillman said: “This is a worrying sign that the greed-is-good culture in our banks is contagious – even the smaller banks are handing telephone number sums to top bosses. The financial sector is incapable of reforming itself.”

With food banks still on the increase when will we see the long promised legislation on this level of profiteering?
