Introduction to TMN
TMN- telecommunication management network
TMN provides a framework to networks so that they are flexible, reliable, inexpensive to run and easy to enhance.
TMN was developed by ITU (international telecommunications union)
It is recognized that there is a logical layered architecture for TMN. Which includes five management layers
Every layer suggests certain management functionalities.
Five layers of the logical architecture are: (starting from the top level)
-BML( Business management layer)
-SML( Service management layer)
-NML( Network management layer)
-EML( Element management layer)
-NE( Network Elements)

NEL
Network Element Layer(NEL) presents the TMN-manageable
information in individual Network Element in the network.
It defines interfaces for the network elements, instantiating
functions for device instrumentation.

EML
Element Management Layer (EML) provides management
functions for network elements on an individual or group basis.
It also supports an abstraction of the functions provided by the
network element layer.

NML
Network Management Layer (NML) offers a holistic view of the network, between multiple
pieces of equipment and independent of device types and vendors. It manages a
network as supported by the element management layer.EML

SMLService Management Layer
(SML) is concerned with, and responsible for, the contractual
aspects of services that are being provided to customers. The main functions of this layer are service creation, order handling, service
implementation, service monitoring, complaint handling,
and invoicing.

Element Management System
It provides foundation to implement TMN – layered system architectures to meet QoS requirements.
Manages one or more of a vendor-specific telecommunication network elements(NE).
Manages the functions and capabilities within each Nes individually but not the communication between different NEs .
Communicates upward to higher-level network management systems (NMS).
The management interfaces exposed by NEs use a variety of protocols such as
SNMP TL1 XML

Network Management System
Network management refers to the maintenance and administration of computer networks at the top level.
NMS can manage multiple vendor devices. It can communicate through multiple EMS or directly to the devices. It provides hierarchical topology of the devices in the network. Network management system supports: Network device discovery - identifying what devices are present on a
network. Network device monitoring - monitoring at the device level to determine
the health and performance of network components . Network performance analysis - tracking performance indicators such
as bandwidth utilization, packet loss, latency.

Why NMS on EMS?
In any network architecture, a service will never be provided using vendor-specific devices.
If there is any fault in the communication between two devices or Element Management Systems(EMSs),there must be a higher level manager for reporting and maintaining the operations.
For these reasons, multiple EMSs must communicate with each other to keep the network alive. Thus comes NMS.
