King David combined a failure in moral leadership with an unwillingness to take personal responsibility

for his actions. All Israel paid the price.

Page 10: TMIY - Becoming a Man after God's Own Heart - Week 4

David said to the messenger, ‘… Do not let this matter trouble you, for the sword devours now one and now another’ … But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. And the Lord sent Nathan to him, and said to him … ‘I will take your wives before your eyes … you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel.’

2 Samuel 11:25-12:12

Page 11: TMIY - Becoming a Man after God's Own Heart - Week 4

Men have struggled with a willingness to take personal responsibility for their actions from the

beginning.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.

Genesis 2:15-17

Page 13: TMIY - Becoming a Man after God's Own Heart - Week 4

The serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God say, `You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?` … You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’

Genesis 3:1-5

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.

Genesis 3:6

And the eyes of them both were opened: and when they perceived themselves to be naked, they sewed together fig leaves, and made themselves clothes. And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God amidst the trees of paradise.

Genesis 3:7-8

Page 16: TMIY - Becoming a Man after God's Own Heart - Week 4

But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you? … Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom thou gavest me to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.’

Genesis 3:9-12

I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.

Genesis 3:16

Page 18: TMIY - Becoming a Man after God's Own Heart - Week 4

Cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you … In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground for out of it your were taken; you are dust and to dust you shall return.

Genesis 3:17-19
