Exit Poll

What a turbulent and “re-defi ning” year 2016 has become – and it’s still not over yet! The Nation is going through a

major transition and transformation, as a result of both U.S. and global politics – to put it both mildly and in neutral terms.

And Chapter 54 has had its own “trial by fi re” in numerous ways: First we lost our dear friend and ASPE icon, Walt Lemon, LCPE, to cancer. That was soon followed by the abrupt departure of our chapter president and a host of key long-time members who chose not to renew their memberships. This left a big hole in leadership of this northwest regional organization – once celebrated as an example for the Society as a whole to admire.

The solution for stabilizing and emerging stronger in America should be apparent to all of us – no matter who you voted for. You don’t rely on the top to dictate your success in life; you need simply to follow the Marine Corps. culture when in a seemingly indefensible position: Improvise, adapt, overcome! Not many of us Estimators were Marines; but who can deny that there is a good reason we call our gathering place “The War Room” on bid day? Remember what Walt used to say,

“This estimating job is not for Sissies, folks”!

The free world forbearers (we Americans) are wise, patient, resilient, and ingenuitive (I think I just invented a word!). Some of us will protest (as a diversion); but, the main force will re-group, develop more superior superiors, plan strategies, and execute sound tactics. That is what will “make America greater” (because we always have been great – but we can always do better).

And this is exactly what will happen to our chapter. Four months ago, I had a “battle fi eld” promotion and I rallied a handful of our troops to mount a new offensive. These individuals have made me proud as they performed selfl essly and heroically. They are (in alphabetical order):

• Jared Carkin, E• Mike Flynn, CPE• Chana Frederick, CPE• Carey Lee, E• Robert Rivera, E• Craig Welburn, E

They are the new backbone of our revitalization. But they need reinforcements (okay, that’s the last military metaphor I’ll waive at ya’!)“Everyone thinks of changing the world,” wrote a famous revolutionary author (contact me and I’ll reveal who it was), “but no one thinks of changing himself.”Dare yourself to change – even just a little bit – by contacting me or any of

ASPE November Program

Paul Tice • CEO of ToPa 3D

When: Tuesday, November 15, 2016 Social Time – 5:30 PM • Dinner & Program – 6:15 PM

Where: University Place • 310 SW Lincoln, Portland ***Free parking – go to the hotel lobby and say that you are with ASPE ***

Construction projects have utilized aerial photography for decades – if documenting the logistics and the progress of physical site was critical, and if the budget could afford it. With rapid advances in drone access abilities and equipment payloads and shrinking price points, a simple set of photographs has evolved into an enhanced array of “must have” data gathering: high resolution videos, GPS precision, 3D mapping and analysis . . .. the “sky’s the limit”!

Join us as Paul takes us on a virtual fl ight and explains the ins and outs; and ups and downs of this exciting new technology. And check out his company’s website:www.topa3d.com

these exceptional people and asking for a task to perform on behalf of ASPE. You’ll be better for it. We’ll all be better for it!

This month I will conduct my last program meeting: Drones in Construction, before handing the gavel over to Chana to fi nish out the “normal” president’s term. And it’s going to be the best presentation – I guarantee you! (except for the past 12 years’ worth of programs my Programs Committee has brought you).

As I ride off into the sunset (now a cowboy metaphor?!) I want to say that it has been my extreme honor and privilege to have actively participated with you all in the Society, serving this construction community. Now go kick some Ess! (Estimates)!

Raffl es, Scholarships & Walt’s Last WishCurt Kolar, CPE

A few years ago, Chapter 54 had committed to establishing a local scholarship/academic endowment program. And, like all noble causes in which “life” and circumstances intervene, time passed by at light speed, chapter leadership roles

changed hands . . . and the construction market, along with family obligations distracted us from bringing this enterprise to any sort of reportable fruition. Enter Jared Carkin, E and the revitalized Chapter 54 monthly Program Dinner Raffl e some time in 2015 and we had a solid base to build on for funding our educational support vision. At about the same time Walt Lemon, LCPE, longtime Chapter 54 and Society go-to guy, the then Northwest Regional Governor and friend to yours truly (and to a lot of you) had informed us of his serious illness. Before long, we had revised and renamed our enterprise the “Ramblin’ Walt Educational Fund Raffl e”. Walt was tickled and honored.

This past April Walt lost his battle. I had the privilege

Walt’s Last Wish

of being among the last people he spoke with. Besides being his usual fake grumpy self to the end, he requested that we redirect our chapter educational fund war chest to the ASPE National Scholarship Fund.

So, to comply with – and memorialize – his fi nal wish, I have formally recommended that we take our accumulated raffl e funds to date (nearly $500) and add a chapter matching gift for a rounded up total of $1,000, and send a check to the Society business Offi ce before year’s end. The Chapter Board and Offi cers have agreed unanimously.

Now a few words on the raffl e – itself.

As I mentioned, Jared has done a marvelous job in both seeking prize donations and hawking raffl e tickets for several meetings, now. Sun Steel and a host of like-generous others (to be named in the future), have

been major contributors. Further, Cherry City Electric had kicked in a grand fi nale prize of 2 golf passes at the Willamette Valley Country Club at our September Program. THANK YOU, ALL!!

As I have mentioned in various messages in past Recap issues, our chapter does good things, because it is supported by exceptional construction professionals. May we continue that track record and tradition for years to come!
