The calculators were developed as part of the Mechanical Insulati on Educati on and Awareness Campaign, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and they currently reside on the MIDG website. Visit htt p://ti nyurl.com/micalculators. The MIDG is the most comprehensive mechanical insulati on resource on the web. It answers the insulati on designer’s basic questi ons—what, when, why, where, how, and is useful for beginners to experienced professionals in the constructi on, design, specifi cati on, maintenance, and management fi elds. MIDG also links to NIA’s MTL Product Catalog, www.insulati on.org/mtl, the only online library of technical literature for the insulati on industry, searchable by product or company. The MTL Prod-uct Catalog makes the most up-to-date product informati on available in one convenient place. MIDG was developed by the Nati onal Insti tute of Building Sciences and the Nati onal Insulati on Associati on, with contributi ons from 15 organizati ons, 60 manufacturers and fabricators,

and contractors, as well as the involvement of more than 100 individuals. The Mechanical Insulati on Educati on & Awareness Campaign (MIC) is a program off ered by the Department of Energy (DOE) in conjuncti on with the Nati onal Insulati on Associati on (NIA) and the Internati onal Associati on of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers (Internati onal). The MIC program goals are to increase awareness of the energy effi ciency, emission reducti on, economic sti mulus, and convey benefi ts of mechanical insulati on in the industrial and commercial markets.

In additi on to the simple calculators, the MIC facilitated the creati on of the E-Learning Modules. The E-Learning Modules are accessible at www.nterlearning.org and cover all aspects of mechanical insulati on. The modules are designed for both industrial and commercial markets, uti lizing mechanical insulati on systems for piping and equipment in both hot and cold applicati ons,

refrigerati on and other low-temperature piping and equipment applicati ons, as well as Heati ng, Venti lati on, and Air Conditi oning (HVAC) applicati ons. The data development projects assessed the commercial and industrial markets to determine how much energy and money mechanical insulati on can save, while creati ng jobs and reducing greenhouse gases.
