    CHAPTER 1

    INTRODUCTION

    Section I. GENERAL

    1. Scope

    a. This manual contains instructions forthe field and depot maintenance of peri-

scope M37.b. These instructions are used in con-

junction with and are supplementary tothose in the operators or organizationalmaintenance manual. Instructions for op-eration, lubrication, and operators main-tenance are in TM 9-2350-215-10. Instruc-tions for maintenance including installationand removal procedures, as well as testsand adjustments after installation, are inTM 9-2350-215-20. It maybe necessary torefer to these manuals for complete pro-cedures.

    c. A description of the item, inspectionprocedures, and repair and overhaul oper-ations are presented in this manual.

    d. The appendix contains a list of currentreferences, including supply and technicalmanuals, forms, and other available pub-lications applicable to periscope M37.

    e. This first edition is being publishedin advance of complete technical review.Any errors or omissions will be forwardedon DA Form 2028 direct to the CommandingOfficer, Frankford Arsenal , ATTN:SMUFA-31OO, Philadelphia 37, Pa.

    2. Maintenance Allocation and Parts

    a. Field and depot maintenance respon-sibilities are limited to those specified inthe maintenance allocation chart in TM9-2350-215-20.

    b. Repair parts authorized to field anddepot maintenance units are listed in TM9-1240-315-35P. Unlisted parts will besupplied, if available, when complete jus -tification is included.

    3. Maintenance Techniques

    a. The maintenance technique, IROAN

(Inspect and Repair Only As Necessary)will be used to

    -restore

    -

    serviceable condition.

    2

    this materiel to

    b. IROAN is the systematic isolation andremedy of a malfunction or defective com-ponent through tests, diagnosis, and sin-

gular repair. No segment of the materiel isdisassembled before the definite need fordisassembly has been established.

    4. Forms, Records, and Reports

    a. General. Responsibility for the pro-per execution of forms, records, and re -ports rests upon the commanding officersof all units maintaining this equipment. However, the value of accurate recordsmust be fully appreciated by all personsresponsible for their compilation, main-tenance, and use. Records, reports, and

authorized forms are normally utilizedto indicate the type, quantity, and conditionof materiel to be inspected, to be repaired,or to be used in repair. Properly executedforms convey authorization and servea record of work performed. The forms, records, and reports establish the workrequired, the progress of the work, andthe status of the materiel upon completionof its repair.

    b. Authorized Forms. The forms gen-erally applicable to units maintaining thismateriel are listed in the appendix. Forinstructions on use of these forms, referto FM 9-3 and 9-4. For a listing of allforms, refer to DA Pam 310-2.

    c. Field Report of Accidents. The r e -ports necessary to comply with the re-quirements of the Army safety programare prescribed in detail in AR 385-40.These reports are required wheneveraccidents involving injury

    -to personnel or

    damage to materiel occur.d . Equ ipmen t Improvemen t s Recom-

    mendations (EIR's) (formerly Unsatisfac -

tory Equipment Reports). All EIRs willbe in accordance with TM 38-750.

    e. Re po rt ing Re ce ipt of De fect ive Ma-terial. All reports will be in accordancewith TM 38-750.

    15. Inspection

    a. Examine the periscope to insure allcomponent parts are present. Refer toTM 9-1240-315-35P.

    b. The general appearance of the peri-scope will indicate the condition and thecare and treatment it has received. Checkfor damaged, cracked, or dented surfaces, bent or broken parts, moisture and cor-rosion, and other evidence of damage ormisuse that might indicate a need forrepair.

    c. The mounting surfaces shall not bedamaged in any way that would prevent the

proper seating of the periscope in itsadapters.d. The crash pad shall not be deterio-

rated, cut, or torn. It should be bondedsecurely to the housing.

    e. The metal cover shall not be damagedin any way that would cause leaks. Inspectwelds for cracks or breaks.

    f. The clamping knob on the periscopeshall rotate freely on the stud, and holdthe periscope securely when tightenedagainst the segment.

    g. The screw on the segment should op-erate smoothly with normal hand pressurewhen the clamping knob is released. Seg-ment shall not be bent or broken.

    h. The painted surfaces shall be in-spected for bare spots, chips, or crackswhich expose metal surfaces that couldlead to corrosion. Determine if finishwarrants touchup or complete refinishing.Refer to TM 9-213.

i . The metal housing on the periscopeshall not be bent or twisted, and thereshall be no undue looseness between thehousing and the periscope body. Inspect

welds for cracks or breaks.j. When viewing through the periscope

the r e shall be no objectionable dirt, smears, scratches, digs, condensate, fun-gus growth, chips, or fractures.

    k. The windows and mirrors of the peri-scope shall be firmly cemented and shallshow no signs of separation from theplastic body.

    1. The sealing compound, 8030-275-

8110, MIL-S-11031A (ORD), shall show nosigns of deterioration.m. Check organizational repair parts and

equipment for general condition, methodof storage, and procedures for obtainingreplacements.

    n. Investigate mechanical and functionaldifficulties that troops may be experienc-ing. Check for determinable causes, suchas inadequate design, poor workmanshipor material, lack of knowledge, misinfor-mation, neglect, or improper storage, orpreservation.
