    1. Inspection Requirements. This manual contains completerequirements for Preflight and Calendar Inspection of IndividualHot Climate Survival Kit. It does not contain instruction forrepair, adjustment, or other means of rectifying conditions, nor

    does it contain instructions for troubleshooting to find causes formalfunctioning. Specific tolerances, limits, etc., can be found inthe applicable maintenance manuals. Use of the alphabeticalindex in the applicable manuals will facilitate locating therequired information.

    2. Scope. The inspections prescribed by this manual will beaccomplished at specified periods by organizational

    maintenance activities with assistance of direct and generalsupport activities when required.

    3. General Information. a. The inspection requirementscontained herein are stated in such a manner so to establishwhen certain equipment is to be inspected and what conditionsare desired/undesired. Compliance with the provisions outlinedherein is required in order to assure that latent defects arediscovered and corrected before malfunctioning or serioustrouble results. Inspection re-

    quirements are arranged, as nearly as possible, according to themanner in which they will be performed.

    b. The inspection intervals designated herein will not be

    exceeded except in actual operational emergencies asexplained herein. It is the commander's responsibility todetermine (on an individual basis) when inspection intervalsmay be exceeded. For this purpose, operational emergenciesare conditions of combat, or conditions of disaster whichnecessitate flight to evacuate aircraft or personnel. Since safetymay be jeopardized when inspections are delayed to meetemergency requirements, commanders will assure that delayed

    inspections are accomplished immediately upon termination ofthe actual emergency. When unusual local conditions ofenvironment, utilization, mission, experience of maintenancepersonnel, periods of inactivity, etc., are encountered, the ALSENCO/officer will, at his discretion, increase the scope and/orfrequency of maintenance or inspections as necessary to insuresafety.

    4. Special Information. The columns headed P and C areused to indicate the requirements for Preflight and Calendarinspections respectively. The calendar inspec-

    tion interval is 120 days. Refer to TM 55-1680-317-23&P formaintenance instructions.

    For the purpose of clarification of terms used in this manual, thefollowing definitions are given:

    Specified Refers to a definite amount, operation, orlimitation which has been established and iscontained in applicable directives.

    Evidence Is an indication of an existing or impendingunsatisfactory condition.

    Security Means the component is properly mounted orattached to related equipment includingapplicable safetying.

    Accessible Is the term applied to equipment that may beinspected without further disassembly orremoval of components, etc., other than thoserequired to accomplish the more specific

    requirements applicable to particularinspections.

    Excessive Is a term used to describe conditions wherespecific limitations have not been established.A condition is excessive if it has progressed tothe degree that, if not corrected, could result infailure or malfunction of component prior to the

    next scheduled accomplishment of therequirement which directed attention to thecondition.

    WARNING

    When an abnormal condition is noted and

    pertinent procedures in this checklist do

    not specifically relate to the noted

    irregularity, work will be stopped andtechnically qualified guidance will be

    obtained from the life support supervisor

    before continuing the operation.

    PREFLIGHT INSPECTION

    The preflight inspection on life support equipment is basically aflight preparedness check. As such, a visual inventory will beperformed by the crew, prior to each flight, to assure that the lifesupport equipment is in serviceable condition. On this basis, apreflight inspection will be required on life support equipmentimmediately before issue for flight.

    CALENDAR INSPECTION

    The inspection consists of checking the life support equipmentfor flight preparedness by performing visual inspection andoperational checks of certain components to assure that nodefects or maladjustments exist which could cause accidents oraborted missions.
