common shipping mistakes.

Three Tips to Help You

Avoid Shipping Errors

Don’t Guestimate

Take the time to research your shipping

options for whatever freight you are ship-

ping.

Sometimes we find ourselves in a rush and

we will assume that we know how much a

particular shipment will cost. Take the extra

time.

International Shipping

There are a number of factors that come

into play with sea freight as compared to

shipping overland. Make sure you are

aware of the term “CFR” (Cost and freight),

this means that the shipper is responsible

for all the freight cost of getting the goods

into port. This could add an estimated 30%

to the cost of the material and now you are

not making a profit. Always request

“DDP” (delivered duty paid) this puts the

costs onto the supplier. Always know your

terms and details when shipping interna-

tionally.

Verify Your Figures

Simple as making sure that you weighing

with the correct weight conversions (ex:

weighing in kilograms instead of pounds)

this was over a $20,000 mistake for one

client. Assign another person to double

check all figures. This is what we do in the

military and it can save a lot of headache.

10 Ways to Improve

Warehouse Efficiency and

Inventory Management Down to earth methods without the use of a

Software program.

Start with upkeep

Have a daily checklist for the

warehouse manager to insure the

warehouse stays in good order.

Know your high sellers

Keep high volume closer to ship-

ping area and easily accessible,

which in turn can reduce labor

and the employees will thank

you.

Cycle counts

Don’t wait for inventory time, do

regular audits, this allows to

Fix discrepancies on the fly and

this will make inventory time less

daunting.

Minimize unauthorized traffic

Keep people that don’t belong out

of your warehouse. Consider

using a special T-shirt to identify

those that belong.

Receiving Room

When receiving freight, make

sure there is a large enough area

where the new freight can’t get

mixed in with the existing.

Quality Control

Double check with a second per-

son.

Priority Picking

Create colored orders or pick lists

that will help the material han-

dlers identify the products that go

to the most valuable customers.

Start new everyday

Before everyone leaves, make

sure that the warehouse is back in

order and ready to start the next

day of business. Workers will

clean better and quicker in an

attempt to get home. If you wait

until the next day and they do this

in the morning, what is the bene-

fit?

Don’t become a Maze

Make sure you have sign so that

staff can be directed to the correct

locations in the warehouse and

not walking around aimlessly.

SMARTER SHIPPING:

Partnering with a Broker

1. Make sure the broker is

licensed.

2. Offers multiple modes.

3. Carrier selection process.

4. How do they manage

carries.

5. Run a credit check.

6. How long in business.

7. Adequate insurance.

8. Most important...
