    James Fenimore Coopers novel The Last of the Mohicans influencedliterature and attitudes towards the frontier, Native Americans, andAmerica itself for decades.

    Cooper was the first major American writer to create a complex mythof white-Indian relations and of life under frontier conditions. -Historian Michael Kammen
