From the Pastor’s Desk
It probably comes as no surprise to you that Pr.
Matthew and I discuss the weekly Scripture
readings. Recently we were talking about the
Gospel reading for Easter, Luke 24: 1-12. While
we both read commentaries about these readings,
Pr. Matthew reads more extensively than I do.
During our discussion, he was describing to me an
interesting point made in a commentary by R. Allen
Culpepper, a professor at Mercer University.
Dr. Culpepper suggests that, when we read the
Gospel According to St. Luke for Easter Sunday,
we think more closely about the meaning of the
empty, open tomb. Of course, we may
automatically think, “Oh, yes, the empty tomb!
Jesus is not there, He is risen!” That is a very
faithful response for any Christian, however,
Culpepper asks us to think about why the tomb was
not only empty but open.
Starting in Sunday School class, we are taught that
the open, empty tomb is a symbol that Jesus is no
longer buried but is risen. Given that, we may
automatically think that the tomb was opened in
order to let Jesus out. Dr. Culpepper suggests that
we might want to think of it in another way: What if
the tomb is open, not so much that Jesus could
come out, but that the women could go in?
In the Gospels of both St. Luke and St. John, by the
time the women arrive at the tomb, the stone has
been moved away from the entrance. In St. Mark’s
Gospel, while on their way to the tomb, the women
are worried about who will roll the stone away so
that they can enter to prepare Jesus’ body. In St.
Matthew’s Gospel, it is clear that God sends an
earthquake so that the women can access the tomb.
No matter what account of the resurrection we read
in any of the Gospels, the wording makes it clear
that the stone has been rolled away so that the
women can see into the tomb which, except for the
linen clothes, is empty. Also note that there is no
wording in the Gospels along the lines of “And
sometime during the night, the stone was rolled
away and Jesus left the tomb.” In fact, the wording
in all the Gospels is that the tomb is opened so that
the women can go in.
Given that Jesus is the Son of God and part of God
Himself, it makes sense that He can go where He
wills, with or without a large stone in place. This is
further confirmed when we read Jesus’ resurrection
appearance to the disciples in the upper room on
Easter evening. The Gospel According to St. John
tells us that the disciples were in a locked room
when “Jesus came and stood among them...”, no
mention of walking through the doorway!
The open tomb says so much about God’s
relationship with us. Jesus is risen and the tomb is
empty, the door to that tomb is open - and has been
open - since the first Easter. God has made sure
that we can see that His Son is risen... and His Son
will not be kept in or out by stones, no matter how
large, or doors, locked or unlocked.
God wants all people to see the empty tomb, to
believe in His Son’s resurrection, to hear Christ tell
us, “Peace be with you!” as He said to the eleven
disciples locked in the upper room. The tomb is
open, and the stone has been rolled away so that we
can see that it is empty, and we can realize that
Jesus is with us... because nothing can confine God
or His love for us!
In Christ’s Name,
Pr. Lisa

FAITH MILESTONES:
A MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY
For the past 15 years, Denise Boonie has been in
charge of Trinity’s Faith Milestones ministry. She
has done an excellent job with an important
ministry which recognizes our young people in
“faith milestones” of their lives. Now, Denise is
seeking to pursue other ministry opportunities in her
life and is “retiring” from Faith Milestones. Trinity
thanks her for her dedication to Faith Milestones
and the youth of Trinity.
We now seek someone who is willing to head the
Faith Milestones program. Denise has graciously
offered to guide anyone who may be interested in
doing this important and rewarding ministry. If
God is calling you to this opportunity, please
contact Pr. Lisa.
