How can the believer cope with the pressures of work?

I. Work with all your heart.

Colossians 3:23

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

Jesus and competition:

Matt 20- 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned because I couldn’t concentrate. Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the axe. After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn’t suited for it. Mainly because it was a so-so job. Next I tried working in a muffler factory but that was exhausting. I wanted to be a barber, but I just couldn’t cut it. I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I just couldn’t cut the mustard.

I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn’t have any patients. I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income. I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining. Next, I found being an electrician interesting, but the work was shocking. After many years of trying to find steady work I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it.

APPLICATION:

1. If God has created us for work and he’s values our work then work can be used to glorify and worship God.

2. When we work for the glory of God and not our own personal glory or for the satisfaction of someone else we can rediscover the joy of our work.

3. Some people will never find the right job because they approach work with the wrong perspective. When we discover this biblical motive for work we can discover the fulfillment our work should provide.

4.When we work for an eternal inheritance we change from seeing our efforts from a short term to a long term. When we work for the worship of God we work for an eternal reward.
