TOMBOY R/C COMPETITIONS 2010. Tony Tomlin

After a very successful year in 2009, the R/C Tomboy competitions for the Mills.75 powered, 36 Tomboy [Tomboy 3s] and the larger 48 Mills, 1.3 powered,Tomboy Senior, are due to continue in 2010 at various vintage meetings.Last year ten competitions were planned but two were lost due to wind and rain.Although around 50% of the meetings were flown in very windy conditions it didlittle to curb the enthusiasm of the keen Tomboyists! Overall in 2009 there were

25 entrants in the Tomboy 3s league and 19 in the Tomboy Senior league, withan average of 12 in the mass launch flyoffs. The numbers of entrants have beengradually increasing over the 3+ years and judging by the large amount of phonecalls and emails I have had, over the last few months, 2010 will surely see manynew entrants. These simple low tech/high enjoyment events seem to suit manyR/C sport fliers who like to take part in an easy, lighthearted competition.RulesThe idea of the competition, when first suggested by David Boddington, was to

keep the rules as simple as possible. There was a small change in 2009 to the flyoff/launch procedure, to try andreduce the eye-straining heights which the models were reaching, this has been

well accepted. The Tomboy 3 rules are unchangedThe Tomboy Senior rules are as before, but it is stressed that models must bebuilt to either the plan published in May 2008, by the R/C Model Flier, [01525222573] or from the kit produced by the Old School Model Aeroplane Company.[tel. 0208647 1033].It is appreciated that some fliers lift the rear of the wing by inserting packingunder the trailing edge to improve penetration on a windy day, this is acceptable.Templates will be available at the meeting if a flier wishes to check his model. Itwas never the intention to check competitors models, but those not to the ruleswill be excluded from the results.
