If you think about it…

If you are converting from smaller unit to a bigger unit, does the actual number get bigger or smaller? Vice Versa? mm to Mm Mm to mm

What is the relationship between exponential number AND the amount of places the decimal moves?

Page 10: Title: Metric System Objective: I will be able to convert from one metric unit to another. Question: What is the metric system and how do I use it? Notes:

Shortcut…

-This method is quick and easy, however like most shortcuts it is easier to make mistakes.

Move the decimal the number of places that matches the exponent number you are converting to.

If you are moving up then move decimal to the left.

If you are moving down then move the decimal

to the right.

Volume Conversions

Volume of a Solid or Gas by Meters (L x W x H) = ____ m3, cm3, etc… 3 m x 3 m x 3 m = 27 m3

Volume of a Liquid is in Liters 1 cm3 (cc) = 1 mL

20 cc = 20 mL

Temperature Conversions

Celsius to Fahrenheit (oC x 9/5) + 32 = oF

Fahrenheit to Celsius (oF – 32) x 5/9 = oC

Kelvin to Celsius t(oC) = T(K) – 273.15 K

Celsius to Kelvin T(K) = t(oC) + 273.15oC

Temperature Scales

Degrees Fahrenheit 32oF to 212oF

Degrees Celsius 0oC to 100oC

Kelvin 273K to 373 K) 0K is absolute zero
