Successes
![Page 9: Title II D Sharing Session Wednesday, August 12 Partnering for 21 st Century Success Lead Agency: Brookings School District Partnering LEA: Castlewood.](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022032522/56649d645503460f94a46c19/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
• Students often resist changes made in the classroom.
• Teachers report it is a challenge to allow for the time students need to properly practice and master 21st Century skills (critical thinking / problem solving / creativity-innovation / communication / collaboration).
• Teachers report a struggle to teach 21st Century skills when there is such a strong focus on preparing students for the Dakota Step test.
Challenges
![Page 10: Title II D Sharing Session Wednesday, August 12 Partnering for 21 st Century Success Lead Agency: Brookings School District Partnering LEA: Castlewood.](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022032522/56649d645503460f94a46c19/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• We must allow the time for students to master the 21st Century skills… the time it takes is worth it! Students will learn more in the long run.
• Teachers must also have time to learn how to teach these skills. Professional development must last longer than one year on one topic. Teachers will need three to five years to really feel as though they are implementing this change as completely as it should be.
• Classrooms must be about learning… not teaching

• Make it clear what the skills look like / sound like in the classroom. I saw a huge difference in effectiveness once I started using the rubric with teachers.
• Keep encouraging teachers to do what they know is right even when the pressure is strong to simply prepare students for the Dakota Step test. They can accomplish both.
• Remind teachers that 21st Century skills is about using a brain before using a computer.
