Parent Involvement in Education

A child’s education is the responsibility shared by both the

school and parents. When schools work with parents to help

their children learn and when parents participate in school

activities and decision-making about education, children

achieve at higher levels.

The Title I Federal Program in our schools is designed to

change the culture of our schools so that success is defined in

terms of student achievement. Along with the Walton County

School District each school that receives Title I funding must

have a written Parental Involvement Plan and a Home/School

Compact.

The Parent Plan describes show the district or school plans to

carry out the requirements of the law as it relates to the

involvement of all parents in the educational process. In shared

decision making, the plans must be revised and approved by

parents annually and should reflect expectations in regards to

programs and practices in the school or district to address the

needs of students.

The Home/School Compact is a written commitment

describing how all members of the school community - parents,

teachers, students, principals - agree to share responsibility for

student learning. The compact serves as a valuable tool to

effectively engage the school and home in supporting the

academic development and needs of the students.

The parent plans and compacts of each Title I school are

posted on their websites and are available for parents to review.

The district parent plan is located under the Parent tab on the

school district homepage (www.walton.k12.ga.us). ALL

Walton County school parents are invited to attend the Title I/

CLIP meeting on Thursday, May 2nd to review the district plan

and provide input and feedback in revising the plan for the

2013-2014 school year.

All Title I schools will soon be revising their parent plans

and compacts for next school year. On Page 2 is a list of the

Title I Schools in Walton County. Contact your school

principal for more information on how you can be a part of this

decision-making process.

Pre-K Registration Registration for the Walton County School District Pre-Kindergarten program begins March 6, 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year. Funding for the program is dependent upon funding received from Bright from the Start. The district currently has two pre-kindergarten classes in each of the nine elementary schools. Pre-K classes seat twenty-two students. The district uses a "lottery" style drawing system to fill the seats each year. The remaining children are drawn in the same way and placed on a waiting list. For more information you may contact Nicole Becker at [email protected] or call 770-266-4482. Visit the Pre-Kindergarten registration link on the school district website at ww.walton.k12.ga.us to download the registration form.

Camp Journey . . . where grieving children find healing. Camp Journey is a two day, overnight camping experience designed to help children express and understand their grief.

The camp is open to any child ages 7-17 who has lost someone close to them. The camp will be held from

Friday, May 3rd - Sunday, May 5th, 2013 at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia. This camping experience is

free. For more information, visit the website at www.mycampjourney.org or call 770-464-5858.

Great Books for Kids about Science and Math There's been a recent boom in beautifully designed and readable science and math books for children. Kids love non-fiction and they enjoy looking at every detail in photographs, reading the captions, and trying to puzzle out the charts, diagrams, and time-lines. Fictional picture books with a math or science theme can provide the perfect doorway for getting your child interested in the world around him. Check your school or public library for copies of these fun books: Bunny Money by Rosemary Wells (Age 0-3 yrs.; Reading Level: Pre-Reader) 10 Little Sleepyheads by Elizabeth Provost (Age 0-3 yrs; Reading Level: Pre-Reader) The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins (Age: 3-6 yrs.; Reading Level: Beginner) Meet the Howlers by April Sayre (Age 3-6 yrs.; Reading Level: Beginner) Eating Fractions by Bruce MacMillian (Age: 6-9 yrs.; Reading Level: Independent Reader Popcorn Book by Tommy de Paola (Age: 6-9 yrs.; Reading Level: Independent Reader
