IV. The Scope of MicrobiologyA. Medical micro - infectious disease diagnosis
and treatment. There are roughly 2000 species of bacteria. Only ~ 200 are pathogenic.
B. Ecological - most bacteria live in soil and water. They form the basis of our food chain. Bacteria recycle:
• 1. Nitrogen - found in DNA, RNA and the plasma membrane of animals and protein
• 2. Sulfur - found in 2 of 20 amino acids. (Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins).
