Transcript of Title –Dystopian Character:...
Learning Objective:
Comparing both original text
and film adaptation, how is
Katniss presented at the
opening of ‘The Hunger
Games’?
Title – Dystopian Character: Katniss Everdeen
Starter:Using the film poster, list six adjectives that you would use to describe the character of Katniss. Describe how each adjective is shown in the film poster to the right.
Having re-read a short extract from The Hunger Games, use the venn diagram, on your hand-out, to discuss how Katniss is presented in the extract.
You need to think about how Katniss feels about the Capitol, and District 12
What does this extract tell us about her as a character?
Is she strong or weak? Does she break the rules?
Why?
Use quotes from the extract to back up your points. What words/phrases stands out to you?
How Katniss is presented in the extract?
POINT – Katniss chooses to trespass into the wood and poach animals
even though the penalties are severe.
EVIDENCE – ‘public execution’
POINT– Katniss is a skilled hunter, so much so that the Peacekeepers
allow her to break the law because they buy her meat.
EVIDENCE – ‘Most of the peacekeepers turn a blind eye to the few of
us who hunt […] they’re among our best customers.’
You are going to watch a clip from the
opening of The Hunger Games.
Use the venn diagram, on your hand-out, to discuss how Katniss is presented in the film.
Think about the use of camera angles, lighting, props and costume. What effect do these film elements have on the presentation of Katniss?
If you feel there are similarities between the two, use the section labelled ‘both’ as well.
Use quotes from the text, or references to the film, to support your points.
Task: Using the information from your venn diagram, construct a passage comparing how Katniss is presented in the book and film of The Hunger Games.
You need to:
1) Compare how Katniss is presented in the book and film, using evidence to support your points. How are they similar, and how do they differ?
2) Discuss why the text and film differ. What do we, as readers, gain that a film audience doesn’t have access to? Similarly, what can the film provide that the book cant?
What is expected of you, by the end of the lesson:
1. A minimum of two paragraphs, written in full sentences2. Evidence - using quotes from the text and references to the film clip.
Focus only on the extract and the clip (not the whole book or film).
