Israel mourns its war
dead— to Yom
HaAtzmaut, its Inde-
pendence Day celebra-
tion. The existence and
flourishing of Israel in
the face of continued
existential threat is a
tribute to the Jewish
spirit but also, more
broadly, to the human
spirit at its finest. To
our refusal to be intimi-
dated by those who
would cast the world
back into blackness. To
our resolve to make
the phrase “never
again” more than just a
slogan.
Thanks to the Greater
Altoona Jewish Federa-
tion and the indomita-
ble Judi Sue Meisner for
this important program,
and to all our parents
and students for partici-
pating.
On Monday, May 1st, I had
the honor of chaperoning an
extraordinary group of area
junior high-school students
to Washington D.C. to tour
the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum and nearby national
monuments. They are partic-
ipants in “Celebrate Diversi-
ty,” which, for 23 years, has
taught students to under-
stand and respect those who
are different from them, be it
in race, religion, national
origin, or gender identifica-
tion.
Among these wonderful stu-
dents was a group from our
Altoona Jewish Sunday
School: Zach Dubrow, Jacob
Dzikowski, Alex Thaler,
Brett Thaler, and Jack Wer-
stil.
Throughout the year, these
students have learned from
teachers, artists, religious
leaders, community lead-
ers—all sorts of people
with different stories to
share and perspectives to
offer. They have been
inspired by life stories;
they have been over-
whelmed and saddened
by the ignorance and ha-
tred that led to the Holo-
caust and the near-
extermination of Europe-
an Jewry—and which
continues to burden
many parts of the world
even today.
They recognize that their
generation will inherit a
world that has not neces-
sarily learned the basest
lessons of history—and
that it will be up to them
not to repeat them.
The trip took place while,
in Israel, the calendar was
moving from Yom
HaZikaron—on which

Dear Congregant’s:
This month we celebrate with the Dubrow family as their son Zach rises to lead our services and to
complete his Bar Mitzvah. We are very blessed by Zach and his family and I want to thank them for
their strong support of our Temple. Zach has studied very hard and is the model student, along with
Rabbi Audrey we are all very excited as the beauty of our sanctuary and the spirit of our religion will
be at its finest moments this coming Friday night.
The Altoona Jewish Community Partnership held its Super Sunday on April 30th
, 2017 and I am
pleased to report that it was a huge success. Thank you to all of the Temple members that
par2cipated in the mee2ngs and in the prepara2on mee2ngs prior. Later this week a
comprehensive report on Super Sunday will be emailed to all congregants and we will look forward
to your feedback. As we move forward, the next major step will be a summary presenta2on/
powerpoint to all congregants of the recommenda2ons of the AJPC and a tenta2ve plan to call a
congrega2onal mee2ng in September to make a decision on the concept of two congrega2ons under
one roof.
As we approach June, it is again 2me for our annual mee2ng, slated for June 23, 2017 at 6 pm at the
Temple. A new slate of officers will be sworn in and the mee2ng will be followed by our Sabbath
service. Please consider joining the Temple’s Board of Directors and ge8ng involved in the
leadership of our congrega2on. Karen Allen heads the nomina2ng commi:ee and will be happy to
consider anyone that is interested in becoming a Board member.
Thank you,
Harry K. Benjamin
