I was the high bidder on many things I used to help create a perfect cozy, relaxing Sunday evening curled up by a roaring fire in the fireplace. I held my breath at the auction because I was afraid Nelson Driver was going to outbid me on the romance novels. To add to my perfect evening, I decided to play one of the Classical CDs I also won including Tchaikovskys Swan Lakeand Sleeping Beauty.I was so lucky to get the CDs because Dave Potter and Rebecca Perrin had been looking at them earlier. I had one more decision to make—which wine glass to use. At the auction I was the happy winner of three different sets of wine glasses—elegant optic crystal stem goblets, two goblets trimmed with gold and engraved H.R.H. The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer 29 th July 1981, and two silverplated goblets made by the International Silver Company. Nancy Bradfield really wanted the set of glasses honoring Prince Charles and Lady Diana but a lady has to do what a lady has to do!! I was so pleased that I came home with all these treasures, plus a few more, and the money went into the treasury of the Waynesboro-Staunton Region. So there I was, my perfect cozy Sunday evening almost complete with my afghan, perfume, chocolates, romance novel, classical music, and wine goblet but I was missing something . . . . . . . . . . I didnt have any wine!!! Maybe next year!!

What More Could a Lady Want?

    By Doris Stone

I came home from the Waynesboro-Staunton Region Steak Fry and Auction one happy lady. I was the high bidder on many things I used to help create a perfect cozy, relaxing Sunday evening curled up by a roaring fire in the fireplace.

I snuggled up beneath the soft white afghan with beautiful red roses I won. I think Debra Skillman really wanted the handmade piece but Larry told her she didn’t need it! Another item I was lucky to snag was some Paris “L’Air du Temps” cologne to spray for a delightful scent.

The gourmet chocolates with peanuts and moist, chewy chocolate chip cookies I scored were perfect for snacking. Trying to decide which Harlequin romance novel to read was a difficult decision. I held my breath at the auction because I was afraid Nelson Driver was going to outbid me on the romance novels. To add to my perfect evening, I decided to play one of the Classical CDs I also won including Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty.” I was so lucky to get the CDs because Dave Potter and Rebecca Perrin had been looking at them earlier.

I had one more decision to make—which wine glass to use. At the auction I was the happy winner of three different sets of wine glasses—elegant optic crystal stem goblets, two goblets trimmed with gold and engraved “H.R.H. The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer 29th July 1981, and two silverplated goblets made by the International Silver Company. Nancy Bradfield really wanted the set of glasses honoring Prince Charles and Lady Diana but a lady has to do what a lady has to do!! I was so pleased that I came home with all these treasures, plus a few more, and the money went into the treasury of the Waynesboro-Staunton Region.

So there I was, my perfect cozy Sunday evening almost complete with my afghan, perfume, chocolates, romance novel, classical music, and wine goblet but I was missing something . . . . . . . . . . I didn’t have any wine!!! Maybe next year!!

    RAMBLINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT

I adore life but I don’t fear death. I just prefer to die as late

    as possible. (Writer George Simeon)

Let’s get right to the story. We (Sue, Todd and the writer)

drove all over creation and came up with a fantastic road

tour for the October event. The Staunton area group will

leave the Verona Post Office on Route 11 on Saturday,

October 17th at 11 AM SHARP and drive to Chester &

Nancy Bradfield’s to meet up with the Harrisonburg group

when we leave at 12 noon SHARP for the tour. (You make

the choice as to which location to leave from) It will be a

total of 41 miles from Chester’s to the Mount Crawford

Creamery ending. Lunch, spectacular sights, farm animals

and a private tour of Brenerman-Turner Mill are on the

agenda. Please contact Stu so we may have a count of

vehicles/persons going on the tour. (For those meeting at

Chester’s parking area—At the traffic light in Broadway at

the 7 Eleven store, go SOUTH 1.1 miles on Route 42 and

then go LEFT on Route 699, Centerville road . Go .8 miles

on Route 699 to the lot and large building on the right).

While lost on the first tour scouting, Sue and I visited with

George and Marcia Vest in Churchville for a wonderful

and entertaining visit. How we wound up in Churchville

from McGaheysville, was as the Garmin GPS I had

plugged in said we were 24 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean

off the coast of Massachusetts on the deck of a fishing

trawler. In any event, the Vest’s graciously donated a few

items for the Steak Fry/Auction. George is on the mend

after he said that he was canning some pears and fell out of

a tree (I just report this stuff, I don’t make it up) resulting

in some broken foot bones and fractured back. Chair

bound George however, doesn’t let this stop his funny

    personality slow him down.

As for the Steak Bake and Auction, we had some 38

hungry bidders by my loose count. Jigsaw puzzles

appeared to be the main attraction this year, what with the

majority of us stuck in the confines of our 4 walls. Baked

goods were scooped up by the bag as were tables full of

    nice articles. .

Our master chef Jim Gregory, outdid himself with

delicious steaks, each the size of a dinner plate and

    cooked to perfection.

Our monthly board meeting was again held at Stu’s

house. Stu relaxed the quarantine tents and brought us

down to his MAN CAVE for our meeting. It’s a

spectacular 24 by 36 foot room with10 Corinthian leather

reclining movie seats in front of a 10 foot movie screen.

In the front center is Stu’s personal seat. A HUGE,

overstuffed glove soft, calf skin, Flamingo PINK chair.

He got it on sale at Grand’s furniture for $6.48, marked

down from $4,875.00. He took umbrage at our comments

concerning his “love seat”. He said if I printed anything

about his choice of seating, our next meeting would be in

his outhouse. Just wait till next month when I tell the

story of that magnificent structure. The one with the

    spritzer under the seat.

Don’t bother walking a mile in my shoes. That would be

boring. Spend 30 seconds in my head. That’ll freak you

    right out.

W-S Meeting September 20,2020 at Grand Caverns

Our Annual Steak Fry & Auction was held at Grand Caverns and the 38 members present enjoyed a beautiful

day, great steaks and a lively auction. Special thanks go to our guest auctioneer, Mark Robertson who sold all

of the donated items at a lively pace.

Larry and Deb Skillman brought their latest

    acquisition—a sharp 1955 Ford.

Duane and Rebecca Perrin arrived in style in their

    “new” 1957 Thunderbird.

Members watch as Jim Gregory, assisted by Patty

Watson, grills the steaks to perfection.

John and Doris Stone select steaks that are done

“just right”. Joe Yancey helps Jim make the choice.

Members check out the auction items, deciding what

    “goodies” they will bid on.

Mark Robertson sells Santa Claus to begin a very

    successful auction.

Dealing with the Virginia DMV during the Pandemic

I have been able to make next day appointments with the DMV select in Charlottesville. They use their own

appointment system rather than the main system through DMV Now. Here is the link to schedule an

    appointment: https://cityscheduler.charlottesville.org.

You might need to review the main DMV website to see if what you want to do you can be done at a DMV

Select. For example, you can get a car titled and registered at a DMV Select, but you cannot get a drivers

license or get an E-Z pass.

On the day of my appointment, the process was super easy. I parked at the Water Street garage in downtown

Charlottesville and walked to City Hall, near the Sprint Pavilion. I checked in at a desk outside then was

escorted into the building. Everyone was wearing a mask, including me. They use a different door for exiting

the building. The first hour of parking at the Water Street garage is free. I needed to have a title printed and

was in and out in less than 15 minutes!

    Patty Watson:

Jim Gregory called me to tell me that our W-S member, Joe Yancey, had a special license plate that he was

ready to move to another W-S member. I called Joe and told him I would be interested. He explained that he

had sold the car that the plate was registered to but he didn’t want to just turn in the plate since we should keep

it in the Region. I told Joe that I would try to get an appointment at DMV so we could arrange to reassign the

plates to one of my cars. I got on the VA DMV website and found that commonly appointments available in

Staunton, Waynesboro or Harrisonburg were out about 2 months. I made an appointment but by chance

checked the website the next morning and much to my surprise, Harrisonburg must have had a cancellation

and they had an opening at 4:30 that very day. I called Joe and we arranged to meet at that DMV site. The guy

at the check-in desk out front said we wouldn’t be able to transfer the plates but Joe knew better since he had

done similar transfers before. Luckily, a lady DMV employee came out and told us that we could transfer the

plates and invited us in where we finished the transaction in about 10 minutes!

You may want to check their websites to find any openings. You can always cancel your long awaited

    appointment.

    W-S Meeting

The Waynesboro-Staunton Region of the AACA held its annual steak fry and auction at Grand Caverns Regional Park in Grottoes on Sunday September 20, 2020 at 2pm. President Jack Drago opened the meeting and welcomed the 38 members present. Jack talked about a tour for the October meeting scheduled to be held on Saturday the 17th instead of the Sunday meeting on the 18th. The information about the tour will be in Tire Tracks. He then read Walter’s e-mail updating us on Allison.

    Nelson Driver gave the blessing.

The secretary reminded everyone to pay your AACA dues.

Todd Smith gave the treasurer’s report.

It was reported that Mary Helen Ayers had moved to The Stuarts Draft Retirement Community.

Ken Farley announced the AACA national officers would remain in office for the following year.

The Founder’s Day Award was presented to Todd Smith.

After the picnic meal, the Vice Mayor of Staunton, Mark Robertson, was our auctioneer this year. This was due to the fact that Bruce Elder was in the hospital. Mark did a great job and the auction took place in a lively and speedy manner.

    Respectfully submitted,
