Purchasing Event TicketsTip No. 1: Buy tickets to events that might sell out first.

Although some may think the flight should be purchased first, the event could sell out in the meantime.

So if you’re only going to Manchester, Tenn., to see Paul McCartney perform at Bonnaroo, buy a concert ticket first. If not,you could find yourself listening to Paulcroon “All You Need is Love” fromoutside the concert because what youreally needed was a ticket.

Purchasing Your Flight

Tip No. 2: Purchase your flight well in advance.

Once you’ve purchased any highly sought-after tickets, start to research which airline offers the lowest price, as well as what day ortime you’d like to return home.

Make sure to:

1. Fly into an airport by or near the event.2. If flying international, check the country’s rules and regulations

regarding passports, based on your country of origin.

Tip No. 3: Don’t drive.

Renting a car might seem like a great way to get around a foreign place easily, but big events are another beast entirely.

Avoid traffic (and parking) issues by doing one of the following:

1. Taking public transportation (and looking up stops and routes in advance).

2. Renting bikes and bike locks, if the event is within biking distance.3. Asking the hotel you’re staying at if they offer a shuttle service to

and from the event.

Tip No. 4: Arrive earlier than the event start time.

Arrive Early

Some events, like Munich’s Oktoberfest, don’tcharge an entry fee. But if you arrive right as it opens, you may find yourself in a line so long that the event reaches capacity before youreach the entrance. Avoid missing out:

1. Find out what time the event opens. 2. Research online to find out how early other

travelers recommend arriving.3. Make any pit-stops the night before, such as

withdrawing cash.

Tip No. 5: Carry only the essentials.

On the day of the event, carry only what you really need that day – and keep all cash or credit cards out of sight.

Some of the items you do want to bring include:

• Tickets to the event.• A form of ID (along with a photocopy, stored separately).• The address to your hotel, along with a map of the area.• Your health insurance card.• Your cell phone, a camera and binoculars.• A deck of cards or a book to keep you pre-occupied while you wait.

Tip No. 6: Wear comfortable clothes.

As with any large crowd, events are often associated with a lot ofwalking – and even more waiting. For that reason, stick to tennis shoes or other active shoes designed for comfort.

The only thing worse than waiting in a long line is doing it inshoes that give you blisters.

Tip No. 7: Prepare for the weather.

Weather Setbacks

The weather will always be somewhatunpredictable.

Plan accordingly by packing:

• An umbrella or poncho.• A jacket and layered clothing if it’s

cold outside.• Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat if

it’s forecasted to be hot.

Tip No. 8: Invest in trip protection coverage.
