The Senior Choir performed at Creative Generation Voiceslast week. They performed two songs -‘Humpty Dumpty’, ajazz influenced song, and ‘Castle on a Cloud’ a musical theatrepiece from Les Misérables. Both songs allowed the studentsto showcase their skills in two-part harmony, dynamic contrastand story-telling. We are proud of them achieving the highestscore for the Maryborough Creative Generation Voices heat, obtaining a Silver Award. The Silver Award means that thechoir demonstrated a high standard across the four criteriabeing judged. Congratulations to the dedicated students of theTinana Senior Choir and special thanks to Miss Shaw and MrSchulze for their dedication to rehearsals.

Last Wednesday, our Tinana Cross Country team competedin the District Cross Country trials at the MaryboroughShowgrounds course. I have been impressed by thecommitment showed by athletes in their preparation for thisevent, regularly seen working with Mrs Murtagh on the ovalbefore school. It came as no surprise that we were successfulin having a number of athletes selected in the MaryboroughDistrict team to attend the Wide Bay Regional Selection trials.Congratulations to Hunter Kimber, Byron Sawtell, KohanWallace, Leah Gleich, Thomas Martin, Rohan Meyers, AdamMoss, Luke Adamson and Lachlan Neilsen who all made thedistrict team.

Last week, I was heavily involved with the recruitment andselection panels as we undertook a merit based selectionprocess to permanently appoint our Deputy Principal and Headof Special Education Services positions. I look forward toannouncing the successful candidates in the near future.

I have again been contacted by the Queensland Fire andRescue Service to discuss risk management of our bushlandadjacent to the school. A hazard reduction burn is proposedfor June. Unfortunately this has not occurred in previous yearsdue to extreme weather, despite significant planning havingtaken place. A letter box drop will inform neighbours of planningand the proposed action. I apologise in advance for anyinconvenience to neighbours however the proposed action willmake the block safer in bushfire season.

In other facilities news, we met with our Facilities ManagerWendy Cowie last week to plan for the removal of the oldmusic block. It will be demolished after the new music blockis completed and the site redeveloped into a Senior studentprecinct with covered eating area on the old site. Finally wewill have a suitable area for our seniors to gather and eat theirlunch.

I have been contacted by the owners of the vacant landopposite to the school to once again ask that school patronsNOT park on their private property. I understand that parking isof a premium at certain times of the school day. I respectfullyask all members of our school community to also respect thewishes of the owner of the land. Parking on private propertywithout the owner’s permission creates a range of legal, liabilityand property issues for you.

Chappy News

CHAPPY WEEK

It’s that time of the year again – CHAPPY WEEK. This yearmarks the 10th anniversary of Tinana SS having a chaplaincyservice in the school, and I can honestly say I am humbled andhonored to have served as your chaplain for the last 10 years. Thanks for being such an amazing school community to workin.

A brief snapshot of what an SU School Chaplain at Tinana SSdoes includes the following:

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:

You Can Do It lunch time club, other programs/groups,classroom lessons, one on one sessions (BEAR plan forstudents with anxiety/anger), and other concerns. NAPLANBreakfast. Harmony Day. Reconciliation Day. Buddy Benches.Bridge Builders.

This can also look very practical at times – attending funerals ofloved ones, supporting families in times of crisis etc. I have donevaried and various things off campus with principal’s permissionfor families in our community during time of need.

CLASSROOM SUPPORT:

Helping with school events (ANZAC Day, Leadership training,Excursions, Family Fun Day, P&C fundraisers where possible,Concerts for junior school parents, Ologies, TheatreRestaurant, Technology challenge, Eisteddfod, School Campsetc).

Any extra-curricular support – this may be individual supportlike helping students with homework and assignments or classsupport.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMS:

Chappies are required to participate in school holidayprograms. I lead one every week of the school holidays. My

favorite one however is the one we run at Tinana SS Hall in thesecond week of the June-July holidays. I get to spend a wholeweek of the holidays having fun with local students and get totrain local youth in leadership. It’s an awesome week.

FUNDRAISING:

Fundraising is a huge part of my role. To keep the chaplaincyservice in the school, I need to raise just over $8000 eachyear. It’s definitely worth it. I support as many P&C and schoolfundraisers as I can, but I also host my own.

COMMUNITY NETWORKING:

Part of my role includes developing networks with communitygroups who can help support our school. In the last year I havespoken at: Young Professionals, Lions Club, Zonta Women’s,QCWA and have helped with the local Domestic ViolenceGroup’s Remembrance Day. Some of these organizations havedonated money or goods to our school or our schoolchaplaincy program as a result.

I am always thankful to the dedicated group of leaders at‘United Youth’ which runs out of our school hall on Fridaynights. These leaders help out in my school communitieswherever they can. In the last 12 months they have volunteeredwith: Family Fun Day, Theatre Restaurant, NAPLAN Breakfast,Cross Country Tuckshop, Supporting children at school withalternate programs, Leadership training days, school rewarddiscos and general chappy fundraisers.

I love what I do and love the extra support Chappies can add toan already brilliant school community.

Thanks for having me as your Chappy for the last 10 years.

TRAINING THIS WEEK:

I have compulsory training in Bundaberg this week so I will onlybe at school on Monday.

SENIOR CAMP:

I am off to senior camp the following week so I won’t be atschool at all that week. I love camp and look forward to thistime.

My timetable will return to normal after camp.

WET AND WILD HOLIDAY PROGRAM:

Invites have gone out for our ‘Wet And Wild’ Holiday program. It is the second week of the June July holidays. It is for childrengrades P-6 and runs from 9-12 Monday to Friday. The cost is$6/child/day which includes morning tea and craft.

It is a whole heap of fun. The invitation is attached. If you wouldlike your child/ren to attend please email me and I will get aregistration pack to you. This event books out quite quickly sobe sure to get your child registered.

If you are keen, please email me [email protected] I will then arrange for theregistration pack to go to your child’s class but please don’tbe concerned if this doesn’t happen until week 8 due to myother school commitments.

Have a great week.Amanda the Chappy

MONEY COMING TO SCHOOL

Would parents please ensure that any money sent to school forany purposes other than tuckshop is sent directly to the officeand is placed in an envelope with student’s name, grade andparticular item or excursion they are paying for, clearly markedon the front of envelope. Pre-printed envelopes are availableat the office for any payments. Student Attendance – Same Day AbsenceNotification

The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest prioritiesfor the Department of Education and Training and for theQueensland Government.

At Tinana State School we endeavour to contact a parentor carer via text message when a student's absence isunexplained after the first roll marking of the day.

As home and school work together, student safety will beincreased. Here are some guidelines to make this process moreefficient:

Free Hearing and Vision Tests

• Notify the school by phone or email before 9:00am ifyour student is going to be absent that day. Pleasegive a brief explanation for the absence.

• If you receive a text message regarding anunexplained absence, please respond promptly, either via text or phone call.

• Please ensure that your mobile phone number andother contact details are up-to-date on the schoolrecords. This is critical, as we need to be able tocontact you in case of emergency.

• If your student arrives late to school, they must go tothe office for a late pass before going to theirclassroom. If they are leaving early, a leave passmust be obtained from the office.
