Paul Harvey was an American treasure. He had an incredible voice, an impeccable sense of timing and best-in-class delivery. Who can forget his “Bumper Snickers“? For example: • My Karma ran over your dogma • Women who seek to be equal to men lack ambition • This is not an abandoned vehicle • Don’t steal. Congress hates the competition. As all of us know our country is sadly (and in my opinion, unnecessarily) polarized and divided. Given this situation, I’m constantly looking for humor, wisdom, solitude and sanity. When the talk is filled with too much vitriol, I find music soothing. I also enjoy a combination of wisdom and humor. While driving home recently, I saw a bumper sticker that I’m sure Paul Harvey would have trumpeted. It was particularly salient and read, “Wag More, Bark Less.” In only four words, it speaks volumes about a “wise” way to live. Would not our world be a better place if we all wagged a little more and barked a little less? Along those lines, I have a plaque at home that contains a nice wish: ”Lord, make me into the person my dog thinks I am!” That’s good stuff! I am very thankful that Patricia Will, the founder, President and CEO of Belmont Village, celebrates and honors our Veterans. She commissioned a wonderful photographer, Thomas Sanders, to take photos of our heroes. She then allowed a permanent exhibition of these special heroes. And this year, two Scottsdale residents, Muriel Pelham and Bill Lancaster, are featured in a Veterans calendar that has been distributed nationally! It encourages all of us to remember the price of freedom. Our mission and joy is to assist you. Please read over the wonderful offerings for February. Plug in, become involved, and if there’s something new you’d like us to offer, just say the word. We are here to serve and our drive is to keep Belmont Village a “best-ever” and “wag-more” place to call home. Have a safe and healthy February!

Hot Cocoa and HealthA cup or two of cocoa each day may do more than ward off a chill.

Cocoa is rich in antioxidants, potassium, iron and other nutrients. Hotchocolate is also chock-full of flavonoids, powerful compounds that arebeing studied for their link to fighting cancer, preventing stroke anddelaying dementia and other cognitive problems. Plus, sipping thissweet treat can make you feel better—not only because the drink isdelicious, but also because it raises the body’s levels of serotonin, whichproduces endorphins and can banish a bad mood.

From the Desk of EmilyDawson, DRCS, R.N.

February Is AmericanHeart Month. Let Us

Celebrate With “Eat RedWith Heart Health.”

It’s time to amend that “apple aday” aphorism. Tomatoes andcranberries keep the doctor away, too. New research shows thatincorporating these 3 red, roundfruits into your daily diet canreduce your risk of heart diseaseby as much as 40 percent. A hearthealthy diet is always the first stepin treating high cholesterol orhigh blood. Fortunately, theantioxidant-rich fruits (apples, tomatoes, cranberries) are as tastyas they are healthy.

TOMATOES A new study byTufts University in Boston showedthat eating lycopene -rich foodssuch as tomatoes more than 5x aweek over an 11 year period

reduced coronary disease risk by26 %.

APPLES An apple a day canreduce LDL (bad cholesterol) byas much as 40%, according to anew, small Ohio State Universitystudy. Be sure to munch on thefruit, rather than drink juice, thepeels house the most antioxidant.

CRANBERRIES Drinking 3 cupsof cranberry juice daily can raiseHDL (good) cholesterol levels by10% and reduce heart disease by40%, a study at the University ofScranton in Pennsylvania showed.Plus, this juice decreaseddiet-caused atherosclerosis(clogging of the arteries) bypreventing plaque from forming.

GO, GO, RED!
