IX. M. SPECIAL INTERESTS IN OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY

Otology My special interest in Otology developed during my employment under the supervision of the well-‐known British Otologist Mr James Robinson at Gloucester, UK, by whom I was trained in all established and some new techniques in Ear Surgery. I also attended several seminars on Otology / Audiology, including the Glasgow Temporal Bone Course (Glasgow, UK, 1989), the National Otoacoustic Emissions Study Day (Manchester, UK, 1995), the Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Surgical Workshop (Birmingham, UK, 1997) and the Closed Cavity Mastoid & KTP Laser in Otology Workshop (Gloucester, UK, 1997). Furthermore, I visited several Otology Centres worldwide, including the Causse Clinic in Beziers, France (Head: the late Jean-‐Bernard Causse, 1991) and the ENT Department of Virginia University, USA (Head: Prof. A. Sismanis, 1998). Within this special interest, in 1998 I performed the first Bone Anchored Hearing Aid fitting in Greece (Athens Naval and Veterans Hospital), and I was the first to use the Otoacoustic Emissions examination in neonates in a private ORL clinic setting in Greece.

Laser Surgery I attended several seminars on the Lasers, as the Panhellenic Congress on the use of Lasers in Medicine (Athens, 1996), the KTP Laser in Otology workshop (Gloucester, UK, 1997), the 14th Cleveland Laser Course (UK, 1997), the 1st ORL Seminar on the use of the CO2 Laser in an Outpatients Clinic setting (Crete, Greece, 1998), the 1st International Seminar on the CO2 Laser Surgery in an Outpatients Clinic setting (Geneva, Switzerland, 1998) and the 3rd International Seminar on Laser Phonosurgery (Paris, France, 1998). Furthermore, I visited some well-‐known Laser Surgery Centres, such as the Causse Clinic in France (1991), the ENT Department of Mont Godinne University (Belgium, 1998), the phonosurgeon Dr Jean Abitbol (Paris, France, 1998), Dr Yves-‐Victor Kamami (Paris, France, 1998) and Dr Nikhil Bhatt (Chicago, USA, 1998). During and following this extensive training, I have been using the Nd-‐Yag and the CO2 Laser in Rhinology and Laryngology operations at several Hospitals in Athens, including the Athens Naval Hospital, Hygeia Hospital, Blue Cross Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital.


Rhinology

After the attendance of the Rhinology Course at the Institute of Laryngology & Otology, London (1989), while working in England at that time, I had the chance to visit the Institute’s Rhinology Unit and have the first contact with Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). After that, I developed an interest in Rhinology, including FESS, Septorhinoplasty and ORL Allergy. Several courses followed, such as the Septorhinoplasty course (Leicester, UK, 1990), the 1st European Seminar in ORL Allergy and Clinical Immunology (Athens, 1992), the 2nd Postgraduate Seminar in ORL Allergy (Athens, 1993), the Functional Endoscopic Surgery Course (Athens Naval & Veterans Hospital, 1994), the Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery Course (Naples, Italy, 2005), the PENN International Rhinology Course (Philadelphia, USA, 2006), the Adelaide Advanced FESS and Skull Base Course (Australia, October 2007). In January 2005 I contributed as training co-‐ordinator to the 1st Hellenic Functional Endoscopic Surgery Workshop with hands-‐on training on fresh specimens, which was held at the Biomedical Research Foundation, Athens, Greece. Since then, I have been participating as course director or faculty member in several Rhinology Courses and Conferences, in Greece and abroad, as presented in detail above in the sections of Teaching experience and Invited Lectures.
